Page Four — July 28, 2013Scripture Reflections forSEVENTEENTH SUNDAYIN ORDINARY TIMELIVINGtheWORDSunday,July 28, 2013TODAY'S FOCUS: PERSISTING IN PRAYERWe are called to be persistent when praying to God,the God of Abraham and the God of Jesus. Colossiansreminds us that we pray as those who have beenburied and raised with Christ in baptism.• FIRST READINGLet not my Lord grow angry if I speak (Genesis 18:20-32).The reading sites the destruction of Sodom andGomorrah. The two angels who had accompanied God onHis visits continued on the road toward Sodom andGomorrah. They experienced the hospitality of Lot andhis family and the gross lack of hospitality on the part ofthe townsfolk. This sin and the other sins of these citieswere too much for God and He announces His plan todestroy the cities to Abraham. Abraham tries to convinceGod not to destroy the city and plays on God’s conscienceand reputation, asking whether God would destroy theinnocent with the guilty. This is typical Hebrew dialoguebetween a sovereign and a subject. Abraham is alwaysrespectful, but continues to push further each time theyspeak. By the end of the dialogue, God has agreed that Hewill not destroy the city if even ten righteous men arefound there. Ten is a significant number in Judaism, for itis the number needed to form an assembly of prayer.Unfortunately, not even ten righteous men were found.God, however, did not destroy the innocent, for he savedLot and his family by having them flee the doomed city.• SECOND READINGGod has brought you to life along with Christ, havingforgiven us all our transgressions (Colossians 2:12-14).There is symbolism of being bound and being free.Saint Anthony Catholic ChurchIn our old days, we were bound to sin (we could not freeourselves from it). Now, sin has been bound (nailed tothe cross) so that we might be free. This means that wehave the freedom to choose love and life.• GOSPELAsk and you will receive (Luke 11:1-13).Jesus instructs His disciples on how they should pray.Luke’s version of the Our Father in Luke is moreprimitive than that found in Matthew. This is a series ofindividual requests, while Matthew’s version seems to bean organized prayer. Matthew probably used the “OurFather” in the community when he was writing theGospel, while Luke used what Jesus had actually said. There are also subtle differences: Matthew has us ask forour bread this day, while Luke prays for the daily bread.Matthew prays for forgiveness of debts, while Lukespeaks of sins. Matthew prays for deliverance from theevil one while Luke prays for deliverance from the finaltrial. Jesus speaks of prayer by giving examples of whatearthly fathers would. God is truly a loving parent whowill respond to our every need. Therefore, when we needsomething, we should not be afraid to ask.• REFLECTIONIn this delightful story from Genesis, Abraham ispresented as being on such intimate terms with God thatGod not only talks over things with Abraham, butresponds to Abraham’s gentle nudging. Notice howAbraham first “draws nearer” to God, asking if God willreally sweep away the innocent with the guilty. Then heincreases the pressure: “Should not the judge of all theworld act with justice?” Quite a bit of chutzpah there! Inthe end, God momentarily yields to Abraham’spersuasive—and persistent—intercession. Jesus urgesHis disciples to persist in prayer to God, after teachingHis prayer to them. This great prayer is the basis for ourapproaching God with persistence. We are told to call GodFather, and then to make two prayers of praise and threepetitions to God. Those praying move from blessing andpraising God’s name and sovereignty to asking for ourmost basic needs: bread, forgiveness, and deliverancefrom evil. Jesus follows the gift of His prayer with adviceand encouragement. His advice is to persist; Hisencouragement is to remember that God is a Father wholoves His children. God will not refuse the gift of the Spiritto those who have been buried with Christ and havealready been raised with Him in baptism. As the author ofthe Letter to the Colossians reminds us, God brought youto life along with Christ even when you were dead in sin.READINGS FOR THE WEEKMonday, July 29Ex 32:15-24, 30-34Jn 11:19-27Tuesday, July 30Ex 33:7-11;34:5b-9, 28;Mt 13:36-43Wednesday, July 31Ex 34:29-35;Mt 13:44-46Thursday, August 1Ex 40:16-21, 34-38Mt 13:47-53Friday, August 2Lv 23:1, 4-11, 15-16,27, 34b-37Mt 13:54-58

TheLord wants us to be richly blessed, and, in turn, wecelebrate our blessings through living holy lives andresponding with gratitude through shouts of praiseand joyous worship. Yet at the same time, ourholiness is not confined to the walls of the church, but must be integrated into every fabric of culturethat we touch. And this can only be possiblethrough a strong expression of religious liberty. This month, as we reflect on being a “holy” andhappy Church, let us remember that we are apilgrim people and we continue to work tirelesslytoward building the Kingdom of God in our owntime and place.JULY 28“Prayer and Christian life are inseparable, for they concern the same love and thesame renunciation, proceeding from love;the same filial and loving conformity withthe Father’s plan of love; the sametransforming union in the Holy Spirit whoconforms us more and more to Christ Jesus;the same love for all men, the love withwhich Jesus has loved us. ‘Whatever you askthe Father in my name, he [will] give it toyou. This I command you, to love oneanother’.” CCC, n. 2745JULY PRAYER INTENTIONFor a greater respectfor religious libertySaint Anthony Catholic Church
