MAGNETOSTRICTIVE PRINCIPLETechnology at its bestThe best linear-position sensors provide absolute position measurementgiving higher productivity and greater safety for machine andautomation devices. MTS linear-position sensors outperform thecompetition, deliver accuracy and reliability under the most difficultconditions, providing excellent value for our customers. Our successis a result of 30 years of technology leadership, vertically integratedmanufacturing processes and unsurpassed levels of customer support.MTS Sensors was the first to realize the promising advantages forlinear-position measurement contained in the magnetostrictivemeasuring principle developed by J. Tellermann. Tellerman’s originaldesign was used to develop Temposonics brand sensors: the firstmagnetostrictive position sensors, a technology that guarantees precisionand reliability without equal.Magnetostriction - how it worksThe heart of MTS sensors is the ferromagnetic measuring element, also known as the waveguide, and a movable position magnet thatgenerates a direct-axis magnetic field in the waveguide. When a current or interrogation pulse passes through the waveguide,a second magnetic field is created radially around the waveguide. The interaction between the magnetic field in the waveguideand the magnetic field produced by the position magnet generates astrain pulse which travels at a constant ultrasonic speed from itspoint of generation, the measurement point, to the end of the waveguidewhere it is detected by the sensor electronics. The positionof the magnet is determined with high precision and speed by accuratelymeasuring the time elapsed between the application of theinterrogation pulse and the arrival of the resulting strain pulse witha high speed counter. Using the elapsed time to determine positionof the permanent magnet provides an absolute position reading thatnever needs recalibration or re-homing after a power loss. Noncontactsensing eliminates wear, and guarantees the best durabilityand output repeatability. With our extensive know-how of ferromagnetic materials, magneticeffects and ultrasonic processes, MTS remains unrivaled in performancestandards for non-contacting position measurement of thehighest precision.MTS Sensors1 Temposonics ® Linear-Position Sensors Product Catalog 551075 C

DEVICENET OUTPUTCONNECTIONS AND WIRINGDeviceNet protocolR-Series models RP and RH linear-position sensors as slave devicesfulfill all requirements of the CANbus (ISO 11898) standard. Thesensors electronics and integrated software implement theDeviceNet protocol to convert the displacement measurements intobus oriented outputs and transfer this data directly to thecontroller. The DeviceNet protocol is appropriate for serial datatransfer up to 500 kBit/sec.When using the DeviceNet protocol with R-series models RP andsensors, functionality always includes but is not limited to thefollowing:• Position• Error Detection• Polling & bit-strobe communications modesPlug and playR-Series sensors with DeviceNet output can be directly connected toa DeviceNet network. The plug and play design makes installationquick and easy. The sensor acts as a “slave” device that transmitsits position and status data upon request to the “master” devicesuch as a PLC or IPC. SENSOR INSTALLATION AND DIMENSIONSTemposonics model RF sensor is very flexible - when space is a problem. MTS adds flexible sensor models to its family of highly accurate,linear-position sensors. The flexible sensor provides proven non-contact and trouble-free performance for very long stroke lengths and linearmeasurements on an arc. The flexible sensor is available with all R-Series outputs including analog, serial digital and bus interfaces.Standard stroke lengths for the sensor are up to 7.6 meters (300 in.) and for special applications, longer lengths are available by consultingthe factory.Flexible sensors incorporate the Temposonics SE (Sensing Element) technology that is the same building block all MTS sensor models use.The SE is housed in a Teflon coated stainless steel housing that is flexible and can be bent in an arc to an 8 inch minimum bend radius.Sensor specifications are measured with a flexible sensor element at a 0˚ bend radius. Most operating parameters are identical to its rigidcousin. Model RF sensors are recommended for long-length applications because they are simply coiled inside a 40-inch diameter box forshipping, which simplifies logistics and handling.10 mm (0.38 in.)Face sealO-RingA97 mm (3.8 in.)Heat shrink sleeve25 mm (0.98 in.)13 mm(0.51 in.) dia.6 mm (0.25 in.) 7 mm (0.29 in.)96 mm (3.8 in.) Both voltage and current outputs allow fulladjustments of null and span setpoints, (minimum 2 in. betweensetpoints). Since the outputs are direct, no signal-conditioning electronicsare needed when interfacing with controllers or meters.Temposonics G-Series sensors are preconfigured at the factory bymodel code designation. For many applications no adjustments arerequired for normal sensor installation and operation. If, however, sensor parameter changes are desired while in the field, the G-Seriessensor is easily programmed.Using external communication for monitoring and programming, there is no need to open the sensor’s electronics housing. OUTPUTSTemposonics G-Series RedundantThe G-Series Redundant sensor is designed for applications with high safetyrequirements. Two or three measuring systems, which work totally independent, are installed inside the compact sensor housing. Each measuringsystem contains its own channel with sensor element, evaluation electronics, output signal, separated power supply, connector and cable. All sensor elements are integrated in one pressure proofed, high-grade steelrod. Rod and housing style feature the approved standard dimensions with10 mm (0.39 in.) diameter rod and 3/4-16UNF or M18 x 1.5 threaded hexflanges. That qualifies the redundant sensor for measuring linear movementsof control valves, linear drives, fluid cylinders and machines.Applications with safety relevant functions benefit from a redundant positionmeasurement, such as:• Valves and drives at power plants.• Pitch settings at water or wind turbines or for marine propellers.• Ship control systems.• Floodgate control.Analog outputTemposonics G-Series position sensors with analog output provide directsignals, including voltage (0 to 10 Vdc or -10 to +10 Vdc, forward or reverseacting) and current (4 to 20 mA, or 0 to 20 mA, forward or reverse acting). Both voltage and current outputs allow full adjustments of null and span setpoints,(minimum 2 in. between setpoints). Since the outputs are direct, nosignal-conditioning electronics are needed when interfacing with controllersor meters.SensorOuputActive stroke length(Measuring range)ADVANCED COMMUNICATION AND PROGRAMMABILITYG-Series sensors are preconfigured at the factory by model code designation. For many applications no adjustments are required for normal sensor installationand operation. If, however, sensor parameter changes are desiredwhile in the field, the G-Series sensor is easily programmed.Using external communication for monitoring and programming, there is noneed to open the sensor’s electronics housing. This can simplify installationand commissioning, saving valuable time. Keeping the sensor electronicsisolated ensures that seal integrity and the highest product reliability aremaintained. The new platform technology inside the G-Series position sensor enables:● Built-in serial interfaces for robust hard-wired serialcommunication, RS-485.● Remote programmability for operational modes and sensorparameters.● Enhanced monitoring and diagnostic capabilities (see below).Programmable modes and sensor parameters for G-Series position sensorsinclude:● Voltage or Current output mode● Voltage or Current output range● Full adjustment for null and span setpointsG-Series PC configuration and diagnostics software user interfaceG-Series sensor informationNull(Setpoint 1)Span(Setpoint 2)0 to 10 Vdc10 to 0 Vdc-10 to +10 Vdc+10 to -10 Vdc4 to 20 mA20 to 4 mA0 to 20 mA20 to 0 mATo controller, meter or other deviceG-Series output setupG-Series Redundant - AnalogTemposonics ® Linear-Position Sensors Product Catalog 551075 C54MTS Sensors

E-Series EP - Analog & Stop/StartE-SERIES PROFILE-STYLE SENSOR PARAMETERSTemposonics E-Series model EP sensors are available with analogoutput or digital-pulse output. The analog outputs include voltage,(0 to 10 Vdc, forward and reverse acting), and current, (4 to 20 mA,forward or reverse acting). Since the outputs are direct, no signalconditioning electronics are needed when interfacing with controllersor meters.Active sensor strokeMeasuring rangeforward actingPosition magnetreserve actingThe available digital-pulse output is Start/Stop. Here the sensorrequires a start signal from a controller or interface card toinitiate the measurement cycle. The sensor generates a stopsignal at the end of the measurement cycle that is used to stopthe controller’s counter clock. The elapsed time between theStart and Stop signals is directly proportional to the magnet’sposition along the active stroke length. MODEL EP2 LINEAR-POSITION SENSOR PARAMETERSOutputDigital-pulse output for the EP2 sensor is Start/Stop. Here thesensor requires a start signal from a controller or interface cardto initiate the measurement cycle. The sensor generates a stopsignal at the end of the measurement cycle that is used to stopthe controller’s counter clock. The elapsed time between theStart and Stop signals is directly proportional to the magnet’sposition along the active stroke length. The controller can calculatethe absolute position of the magnet from the time value andthe sensor’s unique gradient value, (inverse of the speed for theultrasonic pulse traveling in the sensor’s waveguide).WIRING AND CONNECTIONSSensor integral connector (D60 Male)Pinout/wire color code (for extension cable)Pin no.
