Intro<strong>Welding</strong>’s future –the healthy generationTime and again, welding rises to the challenges presentedby modern ambitions: high-pressure pipelines and vessels,supertankers, deep-sea submarines, race cars, skyscrapers andspacecraft … to name just a few examples. But the shortage ofskilled welders is a continual problem <strong>for</strong> the industry.Many workers consider welding hot, dirty, and potentiallydangerous. <strong>Welding</strong> supervisors need to seriously review thework environment and ask themselves:“Will my shop attract and keep the best welders?”And welders need to ask themselves: “How can I protect myhealth?”It’s never too lateOur society is becoming ever more health-conscious, asscience becomes better able to explain the cause-and-effect ofdiseases and ailments. IntroThe welder’s rightto be protectedIt is important to choosethe right kind of protectionIn general it is the responsibility of the employer to identifyany hazards that are to be found in the working environmentand to provide the workers with adequate protection.There are no second chanceswhen it comes to your eyesThe human eye, face and respiratory system are by naturesoft and vulnerable, particularly in the harsh, gritty world ofelectric arc welding. Many welding and cutting proceduresemit dangerous light radiation. The most likely eye injuriesfrom UV/IR radiation are retinal burns and flash burns to thecornea. These high intensity light injuries are preventablewhen the proper protection is worn and used appropriately.The level of pollution is determined by the welding method,amperage and ventilation in the workplace. Comprehensivein<strong>for</strong>mation about regulations, legislation, limits etc. is oftenspecific to each country. The choice of protective equipmentis often made after consultation between employers andusers. 14Eye and face protectionCare and maintenance ofwelding shields and filtersEvery day welding sparks, heat, fumes and normal wear-andteargrind away at your protection equipment. There<strong>for</strong>e, wedesigned all Speedglas products with ease of maintenance inmind. All replacement parts can be installed by hand, withouttools. To contain welding fumes, the two mostcommon methods are local exhaust ventilation and “on-gun,fume-extractors.” It can be hard and time consuming to usethis kind of equipment so that you get the correct protection.All fume extractors can, regrettably, also remove valuableshielding gases, tempting the welder to turn down theventilation.Given the potential limitations of ventilation systems, itmay be necessary to use personal respiratory protectionto complement the exhaust systems to reduce exposure tocontaminants to the lowest achievable level.The multiple benefitsof personal respiratory protection• Products provide nominal protection factor up to 50• Improved worker com<strong>for</strong>t: a cool, refreshing atmospherewithin the helmet• Integrated protectionHow many grams of fume particles do youingest every year?To protect welders, safety authorities in each country haveset Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs) <strong>for</strong> specific fumepollutants. Un<strong>for</strong>tunately, these “upper limits” may stillexpose the everyday welder to certain levels of contamination.For example, if the combined OELs <strong>for</strong> a work area are5 mg/m³ or higher, you could inhale 11 grams or more ofwelding particles every year.*Protection factorsindicates pollutant reductionThe EN standards specifies the minimum per<strong>for</strong>mancerequirements a product must meet. Respirators are alsoclassified by the protection factor they provide. The protectionfactor of the respirator indicates how much the pollutant isreduced (or filtered from the air) be<strong>for</strong>e it reaches the user.For example:A manufacturer of galvanised fences measures 30 mg/m 3 ofzinc oxide in the workplace air. The Occupational ExposureLimit (OEL) is only 5 mg/m 3 . The airborne zinc oxideexposure to the welder, there<strong>for</strong>e, must be reduced by at leasta factor of 6 (30 mg/m 3 divided by 6 = 5 mg/m 3 ). A respiratorwith a minimum protection factor of 10 is required.*) Under normal working conditions the respiratory rate is about 20 litres of air/minute. Over a working year (100%), a welder inhales about 2 300 m³ of air. Underworking conditions with 5 mg/m³ of welding particles in the air, a welder inhales 11grams of particles/year.

The following table is our suggestedmaintenance schedule <strong>for</strong> typical industrial environments.It’s important to maintain the face sealThe thin, pliant face seal prevents the ingress of contaminatedair. If the face seal is damaged there is great risk thatcontaminated air will get inside the helmet. Frequently asked questions29Frequently asked questionsabout welding fumes1) Which respirator do I need when weldingstainless steel?When welding stainless steel with MIG or MMAW, thewelding fumes often contains particles of chromium andnickel, of which chromium is the more toxic. A powered airrespirator with particle filter offers you excellent protectionin this application. TIG welding does not usually emit muchwelding fume but creates large quantities of ozone gas: readmore under point 6. Plasma cutting and plasma welding giverise to high temperatures, which can emit damaging oxides ofnitrogen: read more under point 7.2) Do I really need respiratory protectionwhen welding ordinary steel?Although welding fumes from normal steel is not one of themore hazardous types, it is far from good <strong>for</strong> your health.Among other things, it contains particles of iron oxide, whichcan cause siderosis (chronic inflammation of the lungs). Whenwelding with MIG/MAG and stick, there are heavy fumeemissions, meaning that both a respirator and good ventilationin the workplace are necessary. When welding ordinary steel,a powered air respirator with particle filter is recommended.3) What sort of respirator is needed whenwelding surface-treated material?When welding surface-treated material, a number ofhazardous pollutants can be released. When weldinggalvanised steel, zinc oxide particles are released. Thesecan cause zinc ague, also known as fume fever. If you weldpainted material you should be especially careful, as manypaints can give off very hazardous air pollutants. Whenwelding galvanised steel or material painted with lead primer,it is recommended that you use a powered air respirator withparticle filter. In combination with an odour filter it will alsominimise unpleasant odours. If the material is painted withtwo component paint or insulated with polyurethane, youshould always contact a Safety Engineer. There is a largerisk that you will be exposed to isocyanates, which are veryhazardous to inhale and difficult to detect. In these cases it isrecommended that a compressed air respirator is used.4) What respiratory protectiondo I need in restricted areas?If you are welding in restricted or semi-ventilated areas– where there is a potential <strong>for</strong> build up of higher levelsof contaminant and/or a reduction in oxygen levels – a


30Frequently asked questionscompressed air respirator is suggested, regardless of weldingmethod. With a compressed air respirator, providingbreathable quality air, you can be confident of gettingsufficient oxygen, as well as high levels of protection againstgas and particulate contaminants. Powered or compressed airrespirators are never to be used in atmospheres immediatelydangerous to life or health (IDLH). Always ask a SafetyEngineer if you are unsure!5) Does shielding gases and alloyedelectrodes affect my workingenvironment?When welding with MIG and TIG, the noble gases argonand helium are used as shielding gases. Neither argon norhelium is considered hazardous, but they can displaceoxygen in unventilated areas. In such cases, a compressedair respirator is required. When welding with MAG, carbondioxide, or a mixture of carbon dioxide and a noble gas, isused as a shielding gas. Since parts of the shielding gas canbe converted into carbon monoxide when the gas reachesthe air, large quantities of carbon monoxide can <strong>for</strong>m aroundthe welding arc. Carbon monoxide cannot be filtered away.If the ventilation is bad, the oxygen level must be checkedand a compressed air respirator used. Alloyed electrodesare common when welding with MAG. The alloys oftencontain manganese or silicates. This means that largequantities of manganese oxide and silicates are diffusedinto the surrounding air when you are welding. A poweredair respirator with particle filter usually offers sufficientprotection against alloy particles.6) When does ozone <strong>for</strong>m?When welding aluminium not only are particles of aluminiumoxide produced but ozone gas is <strong>for</strong>med by the action of theUV radiation from the arc breaking down molecular oxygen.Ozone is also produced when welding stainless steel withTIG. Eventually ozone will be converted back to oxygen, aprocess that is speeded up when the ozone comes into contactwith solid surfaces.Ozone cannot be filtered from the atmosphere but relies onbeing converted back to oxygen. At low ozone concentrationsthe use of a powered air respirator with particulate filterreduces the amount of ozone reaching the welder. This isachieved by the fact that the particle filter (because of itslarge surface area) and the connecting tube to the weldingshield help to catalyse the conversion of ozone back to normaloxygen. At higher concentrations the inclusion of a gas filterwould add an additional large surface of carbon granules onwhich a further reduction of ozone takes place.7) What are nitrogen gases?Nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide are examples of nitrogengases that are <strong>for</strong>med when you weld with high amperage andhigh temperatures. Nitrous gases are <strong>for</strong>med by a reactionin the air between nitrogen and oxygen and are hazardous toinhale in high concentrations, e.g. when welding in confined,poorly ventilated areas. It is recommended that a compressedair respirator is used in such cases.

There is no separate classification<strong>for</strong> particle filters (P) in the standard EN12941, the particlefilter is part of the system classification. Standard EN12941defines three classes of per<strong>for</strong>mance (TH1, TH2 and TH3).The numbers define the level of per<strong>for</strong>mance (inward leakage)within the classification. Inward leakage <strong>for</strong> classificationTH1 is maximum 10 %, <strong>for</strong> TH2 maximum 2 % and <strong>for</strong> TH3maximum 0.2 %.
