Assalumu Alaikum,It is my pleasure to welcome H.E. Sheikh Nahayan binMubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education andScientific Research, and thank him for his kind gesture towitness with us today the graduation of the first group ofstudents from the <strong>Petroleum</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>. It is indeed throughhis continued support and advice that this young institutionhas been able to advance with confidence.Since its establishment in 2000, the vision of the <strong>Petroleum</strong><strong>Institute</strong> was to provide a world-class education inengineering and applied science. <strong>The</strong> short-term objectiveswere to meet the ever growing demand of the country’s oiland gas industry in general and ADNOC and its Group ofCompanies in particular for locally trained U.A.E. nationalsin all fields of engineering.It is with great pride, therefore, that we are celebrating todaythe graduation of the first group of PI engineers whoare not only capable of competing with engineers from thefinest Colleges of Engineering in the world but who alsohave the competitive edge of knowing the economics, politicsand technical issues concerning the domestic oil industry.It is upon them that the future of the industry will depend.No doubt , opening the doors for women enrollmentstarting from the fall 2006 will be another milestone for thePI’s endeavor to tap the talent of young women who comprisethe majority of high school science graduates.ADNOC also looks forward for the PI to become the educationaland research hub, serving the educational and researchneeds of the industry and its professionals.It is at a moment like this, when we celebrate the fruits ofyears of hard work and determined team efforts; that weremember our late visionary leader Sheikh Zayed bin SultanAl Nahyari, who saw the youth as the real wealth ofthis country and education as the comer stone of its development.Our special thanks and gratitude also go to our PresidentH.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and to H.H.General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, AbuDhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commanderof the UAE Armed Forces, whose guidance and directionhave been pivotal for the smooth progress of the PI.<strong>The</strong> <strong>Petroleum</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> is a unique enterprise that representscollaboration between academia and the private sectorand has faithfully used the resources that were made availableto it by ADNOC and international partners , namelyBP, JODCO, Shell, and Total. <strong>The</strong>re is no doubt, therefore,that our appreciation also goes to the senior managementand faculty of the PI for a job well done and for our partnersfor their unwavering support to this young institutionover the years.In particular , I wish to thank Dr. and Mrs. John Goldenwho since inception of the PI assumed leadership of theacademic affairs and curriculum development.I also want to extend a special gratitude to the ColoradoSchool of Mines for their unbridled support and generouscare for the PI. My appreciation and recognition alsogoes to Dr. Nigel Middleton for hisdevotion and faith inthe ability of the PI to become a cutting edge engineeringuniversity.Finally, I would like to extend my warm congratulations tothe graduating class and wish them a prosperous future.Thank you.H.E.
