Assalumu Alaikum,It is my pleasure to welcome H.E. Sheikh Nahayan binMubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education andScientific Research, and thank him for his kind gesture towitness with us today the graduation of the first group ofstudents from the Petroleum Institute. It is indeed throughhis continued support and advice that this young institutionhas been able to advance with confidence.Since its establishment in 2000, the vision of the PetroleumInstitute was to provide a world-class education inengineering and applied science. The short-term objectiveswere to meet the ever growing demand of the country’s oiland gas industry in general and ADNOC and its Group ofCompanies in particular for locally trained U.A.E. nationalsin all fields of engineering.It is with great pride, therefore, that we are celebrating todaythe graduation of the first group of PI engineers whoare not only capable of competing with engineers from thefinest Colleges of Engineering in the world but who alsohave the competitive edge of knowing the economics, politicsand technical issues concerning the domestic oil industry.It is upon them that the future of the industry will depend.No doubt , opening the doors for women enrollmentstarting from the fall 2006 will be another milestone for thePI’s endeavor to tap the talent of young women who comprisethe majority of high school science graduates.ADNOC also looks forward for the PI to become the educationaland research hub, serving the educational and researchneeds of the industry and its professionals.It is at a moment like this, when we celebrate the fruits ofyears of hard work and determined team efforts; that weremember our late visionary leader Sheikh Zayed bin SultanAl Nahyari, who saw the youth as the real wealth ofthis country and education as the comer stone of its development.Our special thanks and gratitude also go to our PresidentH.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and to H.H.General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, AbuDhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commanderof the UAE Armed Forces, whose guidance and directionhave been pivotal for the smooth progress of the PI.The Petroleum Institute is a unique enterprise that representscollaboration between academia and the private sectorand has faithfully used the resources that were made availableto it by ADNOC and international partners , namelyBP, JODCO, Shell, and Total. Your Excellency, Mr. Yousef Omeir BinYousef, Chairman of the Governing Boardof the Petroleum Institute, honored guests,faculty and staff of the Petroleum Institute,graduates and their families, good eveningand welcome to the 4th CommencementCeremony of the Petroleum Institute. It iswith great pleasure that I join you as wecelebrate the achievement of the graduatingclass of 2009. It is a privilege to be a partof an Institution that has charged itself witheducating the next generation of technologicalleaders in the oil/gas and the broaderenergy sector.Since our last commencement in January2009, the Petroleum Institute has continuedits progress towards its goals which have includedMinistry of Higher Education Instituteapproval in fall 2009 for a full five-yearaccreditation of all five Bachelor of Sciencein engineering programs, as well as initialaccreditation for its programs in Masterof Science and Master of Engineering. Additionally,the graduate program is makingsubstantial progress with more than 50sponsored research projects and nearly 100graduate students working toward theirgraduate degrees in less than two yearssince graduate studies began at PI. We areparticularly pleased to hear that in 2009 thefaculty of the Petroleum Institute publishedmore journal articles than the combinedcontribution of all other universities in theUnited Arab Emirates.In 2010 we look forward to ground-breaking of theStudent Center, Conference Center, the much awaitedPI Research Center (PIRC), and later, the constructionof new buildings for engineering programs.Recently we received the approval of the Board ofGovernors to launch the new Materials Science andEngineering program at the PI. We are also workingon other new degree programs at the PI, with theaim of serving the needs of our sponsors while establishingourselves as an internationally recognizedengineering school in fields of direct relevance to oiland gas and the broader energy sector.We welcome the upcoming research partnershipwith the University of Texas at Austin, as well aswith Rice University in Houston. We appreciate thesupport of ADCO and other contributors for this collaboration.The continued progress and success achieved by thePI is a reflection of the vision, devotion and contributionsof many. We thank the leadership of this countryfor the vision and support that created The PetroleumInstitute. We are grateful to H.E. PI Chairmanof the Board, Mr. Yousef Omeir Bin Yousef, for hiscontinued dedication and endless energy toward theInstitute, and we thank PI’s core sponsor, ADNOCand its operating group companies for their keeninterest in the Institute. We hope that you willremember the professors and all others who haveequipped you with the core knowledgeand skills for success in your professionalcareers.Second, we charge you to keep trust in Godand the spiritual values and commit to upholdthe highest standards of integrity andpersonal and professional code of conductand practice in every aspect of your lives.Third, graduates, today you enter the workforce in a country that is a role model forthe Muslim and non-Muslim world. Tom is a successful technology innovator/developer/entrepreneurand investor with experience sitting on both sidesof the boardroom table. He has over twenty-five years experiencein communications systems, equipment, chipsetsand software. As a General Partner at Novak Biddle VenturePartners, he currently sits on the boards of portfoliocompanies Centice, Paratek, Princeton Optronics, CommandInformation, Fiberzone Networks, Digital Bridgeand Avail MediaTom served as Senior Vice President of Engineering atHughes Network Systems before founding Telogy Networks,a leader in providing embedded communicationssoftware for wireless and IP networks, in 1990. Telogy’saward-winning products were proven market successeswith world-class customers such as Cisco, Motorola, Samsung,Nortel, Alcatel and NEC. In 1998, Motorola purchasedTelogy’s digital cellular technology and development team,and in 1999, Texas Instruments purchased Telogy as thepioneer in embedded VOIP software. The Chemical Engineering program at the Petroleum Instituteis designed to provide students with a rigorous educationin the fundamentals of engineering science, and specifictraining in applications of chemical engineering in theoil and gas industries. The program features two summerinternships in industry which provide students with significantexposure to the petroleum processing industries inthe Middle East and elsewhere in the world.Currently the Chemical Engineering program offers a degreeprogram leading to the Bachelor of Science degree(BSc) in Chemical Engineering. برنامج علوم االرض البرتوليةPetroleum Geosciences

The Petroleum Geosciences Program at the Petroleum Instituteis designed to give students a rigorous educationin the fundamentals of geology and geophysics with specifictraining in applications of geoscience in the oil and gasindustries. The program features several field trips and asummer field geology course.The Program leads to the Bachelor of Science Degree inPetroleum Geosciences. Advanced studies leading to theM.Sc. start in spring 2010, and a Ph.D. program is plannedfor the near future.Students that successfully complete the Bachelor of ScienceProgram will be able to enter the petroleum industryas petroleum geologists or petroleum geophysicists andhave a solid educational base if they decide to continue ina graduate program.The degree program begins the second year with coursesthat cover the basic elements of the geological and geophysicalsciences. Higher level courses include Geology ofthe Middle East, Earth Materials (mineralogy) and courseswith students studying Petroleum Engineering includingeconomics. The program continues with advanced coursesin Structural Interpretation, Petrology, Petroleum Geophysics,Geostatistics, Sedimentology and Stratigraphy, RockProperties, Petrophysics, Environmental Geology and ReflectionSeismology. A key component of the program isstudent’s access to advanced laboratories, including computerlaboratories where the reservoirs can be studied inthree dimension using reflection seismic and other data ina virtual reality format. This greatly facilitates the understandingof the complexities of reservoir stratigraphy andrelationships between reservoir geology and petroleumproduction.
