The Delegati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> the Netherlands, as Chair <strong>of</strong> the electr<strong>on</strong>ic Work<strong>in</strong>g Group <strong>on</strong> PAs,<strong>in</strong>troduced the document highlight<strong>in</strong>g the ma<strong>in</strong> issues associated with PA c<strong>on</strong>tam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> food andfeed as presented <strong>in</strong> CX/CF 11/5/14.81. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> noted that there was general agreement with the recommendati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> thework<strong>in</strong>g group as set out <strong>in</strong> paragraphs 167-171 <strong>of</strong> the discussi<strong>on</strong> paper namely: to encourage <str<strong>on</strong>g>Codex</str<strong>on</strong>g>members and observers to develop more analytical reference standards for PA to enable thedevelopment and validati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> analytical methods; to generate more occurrence data <strong>on</strong> PAc<strong>on</strong>tam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> food and feed; to request JECFA to identify which PA <strong>in</strong> food and feed (as carry overfrom feed to animal products) were <strong>of</strong> key <strong>in</strong>terest to human health and to perform a full riskassessment based <strong>on</strong> the available data for the identified PA and/or to identify data gaps if full riskassessment was not possible (see Agenda Item 11); and to start work <strong>on</strong> a code <strong>of</strong> practice for thepreventi<strong>on</strong>/reducti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> food with PA <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a compilati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g effectivemanagement/mitigati<strong>on</strong> practices to prevent/reduce PAs c<strong>on</strong>tam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> food. In view <strong>of</strong> thesec<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>s, the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> also agreed with the recommendati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> the work<strong>in</strong>g group not to startwork <strong>on</strong> an ML for PA <strong>in</strong> food and feed for the time be<strong>in</strong>g.C<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>82. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> agreed to re-establish the electr<strong>on</strong>ic Work<strong>in</strong>g Group <strong>on</strong> PA, led by theNetherlands, work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> English <strong>on</strong>ly and open to all <str<strong>on</strong>g>Codex</str<strong>on</strong>g> members and observers, to update thediscussi<strong>on</strong> paper based <strong>on</strong> the above c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>s, <strong>in</strong> particular to undertake further compilati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong>exist<strong>in</strong>g management practices and to evaluate the possibility to develop a code <strong>of</strong> practice forc<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong> by the next sessi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g>.83. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> also encouraged <str<strong>on</strong>g>Codex</str<strong>on</strong>g> members and observer to develop more analyticalreference standards for PA and to gather more <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> the occurrence <strong>of</strong> PA <strong>in</strong> food and feed.OTHER MATTERSPreparati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> discussi<strong>on</strong> papers and other work<strong>in</strong>g documents84. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> noted that discussi<strong>on</strong> papers should be focused <strong>on</strong> the questi<strong>on</strong>s/issues putforward by the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> and should present succ<strong>in</strong>ct supportive <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> necessary to providethe rati<strong>on</strong>ale for the recommendati<strong>on</strong>s. Additi<strong>on</strong>al background scientific <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> that may beuseful for further c<strong>on</strong>sultati<strong>on</strong> by <str<strong>on</strong>g>Codex</str<strong>on</strong>g> members and observers could be reta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> Annexes <strong>in</strong>orig<strong>in</strong>al language. This will also facilitate discussi<strong>on</strong> at plenary by focus<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong> the issue at hand andnot deviat<strong>in</strong>g the attenti<strong>on</strong> by also comment<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong> the background <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong>. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> als<strong>on</strong>oted that when available, scientific <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> should preferably be cross referenced <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong>reproduc<strong>in</strong>g it <strong>in</strong> the discussi<strong>on</strong> paper and that, if JECFA m<strong>on</strong>ographs were not yet available, thedrafts could be obta<strong>in</strong>ed from the JECFA Secretariat. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> further noted that l<strong>on</strong>gdocuments could add to additi<strong>on</strong>al pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g and translati<strong>on</strong> costs that might be sometimes cumbersomefor the host country. It was noted that the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Codex</str<strong>on</strong>g> Secretariat may provide examples or guidel<strong>in</strong>es <strong>on</strong>how to prepare discussi<strong>on</strong> papers <strong>in</strong> order to have a uniform presentati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> these documents.ENDORSEMENT OF PROVISIONS FOR HEALTH-RELATED LIMITS FOR CERTAINSUBSTANCES IN THE STANDARD FOR NATURAL MINERAL WATER (Agenda Item 10) 1985.
