2. Carbonate oozes cover about 50 % or 140 x 10 6 km 2 of the ocean.Carbonate oozes consist of (phytoplankton) nanofossil ooze(coccolithophores), and (zooplankton) foraminifera, or pteropods.The concentration and distribution of biogenic sediments in the ocean iscontrolled by production, preservation and dissolution of the material.
Sediments in the open ocean are called pelagic and those influenced bycontinental margin and terrigenous sedimentation are calledhemipelagic sediments.
