The floor is to be 3 foot off the floor (concrete).This is to allow waste to fall through to the floor reducing the risk of rotten food being eaten,help stop the spread of disease, and make it less likely to attract vermin. (Butler.S)4.3 Spatial RequirementsAn enclosure that is to house a pair of squirrel gliders should be a minimum size of 3.7m longx 3.5m wide x 3m in height. An additional 1.5x1.5 meters should be added for each additionalanimal. (Jackson.S, Ed. 2003)4.4 Position of Enclosures<strong>Squirrel</strong> gliders are often held in a nocturnal house. Outdoor enclosures should be built toface away from prevailing winds and poor weather. Nest boxes should be hung in a dark area ofthe enclosure.4.5 Weather ProtectionNest boxes should be positioned on wall in an area safe from wind and rain. The rest of theenclosure can be opened to allow good air circulation.4.6 Temperature Requirements<strong>Squirrel</strong> gliders don’t generally need heating unless low temperatures are sustained forweeks under five degrees Celsius (S.M. Jackson Ed.). Heat lamps can be used to stop them fromgoing into torpor.4.7 SubstrateNocturnal House.Pine bark 15mm in size (Annette Gifford) is then used as the substrate due to its durability,and aesthetic valueHolding Enclosure.Dolerite can be used as substrate in holding enclosures that are not suspended (TarongaZoo).15
