Part III — Areas of Study<strong>Religious</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>Curriculum</strong> <strong>Directory</strong><strong>The</strong> Third Part of this <strong>Curriculum</strong> <strong>Directory</strong> is a principled statement of the content of <strong>Religious</strong><strong>Education</strong> for our <strong>Catholic</strong> schools:123It broadly follows the structure of the Constitutions of the Second Vatican Council and theCatechism of the <strong>Catholic</strong> Church.It distinguishes four principal Areas of Study, and for each area it names the key facets of the<strong>Catholic</strong> faith that form the core of <strong>Religious</strong> <strong>Education</strong> in <strong>Catholic</strong> schools.It goes on to outline the teaching content for each area as it unfolds in age groups during primaryand secondary education by way of examples.Since this is a curriculum directory and not a syllabus, the doctrines and topics designated are intendedto provide an overview. <strong>The</strong> more detailed notes for each topic are offered as an aide-mémoireto assist planning. It is for the local ordinary to indicate the precise manner in which this <strong>Directory</strong> isto be used and determine the resources used in schools. Diocesan officers will continue, throughsupport for teachers and in-service provision, to encourage collaboration and development in thework of <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>Education</strong>.10
