<strong>Religious</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>Curriculum</strong> <strong>Directory</strong>attention needs to be given at the appropriate levels of responsibility to ensure that:• the need for ‘adaptation’ is removed by ensuring that from the outset programmes and curriculumplanning encompass the needs of all children taking account of a range of differentneeds, abilities and learning styles;• professional development is provided at every level in relation to disability awareness, the requirementsof legislation, the call of the Gospel and the implications of these on the developmentof accessible <strong>Religious</strong> <strong>Education</strong> programmes;• advisors and inspectors are familiarised with the different ways of teaching, assessing andgathering evidence for pupils working within the P scales;• all schools provide access to multi-sensory experiences and symbol-supported text resources;• a variety of age appropriate and enriching <strong>Religious</strong> <strong>Education</strong> experiences is provided forpupils who may not necessarily progress through the P scales (e.g. those with degenerative orlife-limiting conditions);• links are formed between <strong>Catholic</strong> special and mainstream schools so that the accessibility ofthe <strong>Religious</strong> <strong>Education</strong> curriculum for pupils with special needs in the latter may be enhanced;• avenues of accreditation for pupils working at different levels are explored.Summary<strong>The</strong> methods employed in <strong>Religious</strong> <strong>Education</strong> are always aimed at opening up for the pupilthe mystery of God’s saving action in Jesus Christ. This mystery is both many-sided and entirelyone, for it is in essence the person of Christ ‘the same yesterday, today and for ever’. 24<strong>The</strong> mystery can be imagined as a well-cut and highly polished gem, each facet reflecting its brilliance,yet best appreciated as a single whole. It is this image that is used in this <strong>Curriculum</strong> <strong>Directory</strong>to hold together the various aspects of <strong>Catholic</strong> faith that make up the content of <strong>Religious</strong> <strong>Education</strong>.8
