Abernethy Physical Education CenterThe Julius W. Abernethy Physical Education Center, home of <strong>Catawba</strong>’s basketball teams, is one of the finest on-campus athleticfacilities in the state of North Carolina. It was named after the late Julius W. Abernethy of Newton, N.C., and was dedicated onSeptember 26, 1970. <strong>Basketball</strong> games are played in the center’s Goodman Gymnasium, named in honor of Enoch A. Goodman ofSalisbury. In October of 2002, the floor was named in honor of former head coach, Sam Moir, who guided <strong>Catawba</strong> to 546 wins over34 seasons.The Indians, under head coach Sam Moir, properly opened the new facility with a 120-82 triumph over the visiting Pioneers ofTusculum <strong>College</strong> on November 27, 1970. Since that game, <strong>Catawba</strong> basketball teams have compiled an impressive 398-144 recordfor homes games, for a winning percentage of .734. The Tribe has recorded two 23-game home winning streaks in the past six years.The building, which cost more than $1.8 million to build, has a seating capacity of 3,500 for basketball, and now has a value ofabout $5 million. A beautiful maple hardwood playing surface was installed in December 1990. The facility is also used extensivelyfor intercollegiate volleyball, student activities, civic events, concerts and various athletic camps during the summer months.The <strong>College</strong>’s Athletic and Physical Education offices, as well as classrooms, are located on the upper level. Situated on the lowerlevel is the Allen S. Jim Baker - Head CoachJim Baker enters his fourteenth season as the head coach ofthe men’s basketball program at <strong>Catawba</strong>. During the last tenyears, Baker has guided the Indians to the NCAA II Tournamentsix times. His teams have won nearly 70% of their games andhave an impressive home record of 153-40 (79%). <strong>Catawba</strong> has a70-46 record in games decided by five points or less under coachBaker. During his tenure, <strong>Catawba</strong> has produced three conferencePlayers of the Year and two All-Americans. The Indianshave graduated 34 of 38 seniors under Baker.Last season, Baker was voted SAC Coach of the Year for thefifth time as <strong>Catawba</strong> won the league title and earned a spot inthe NCAA II Regional Tournament. In 2004-05, Baker earned SACCoach of the Year honors as the Indians claimed the conferencetitle and advanced to the NCAA II Tournament. In 2004,<strong>Catawba</strong> became the lowest seed (#7) to win the league tournament,earning a regional tournament berth. After a 25-5 seasonand a third South Atlantic Conference title in 2001, Baker wasnamed league Coach of the Year. Baker was named SAC andNCAA II Region Coach of the Year in 1998, after <strong>Catawba</strong> posteda 25-6 record. He also earned SAC Coach of the Year honors in1996, after he guided the Indians to their first conference titlesince 1983. His 16 victories in his first season was the most everfor a first-year basketball coach at <strong>Catawba</strong>. He also hadNCAA Division I experience as an assistant at Virginia Tech(1989-91) and Davidson (1981-89). Baker came to <strong>Catawba</strong> inJune 1993, as an assistantcoach during SamMoir’s final campaign ashead coach. Moir retiredin May 1994, ending agreat 34-year career at<strong>Catawba</strong>.Baker, a dean’s liststudent at <strong>Catawba</strong>before graduating in1978, played for Moirfrom 1975-78. Hetransferred from UNC-Charlotte and was a part of two 20-winseasons at <strong>Catawba</strong>. He was a member of the 1976-77 CarolinasConference Championship team and three of his former teammates,Benny Callahan, Eric Harris and Herman Miles are in the<strong>Catawba</strong> Sports Hall of Fame.Baker began his coaching career as a graduate assistant forMoir in 1978-79 and at Wingate the next year, while earning amaster’s degree in human development and learning at UNC-Charlotte. He was also an assistant coach at Belmont Abbey(1980-81).Baker worked under Bobby Hussey at Davidson, Frankie Allenat Virginia Tech and Joe Cantafio at VMI. At Davidson, Baker waspart of a program which graduated 25 of 26 student athletes. Inaddition, the Wildcats put together back-to-back 20-win seasons(1986-87) and appeared in the 1986 NCAA Southeast Regional.While Baker was at Virginia Tech, the Hokies became only thethird team in Metro Conference history to sweep both MemphisState and Louisville in the same year. At VMI, Baker was responsiblefor recruiting, scouting, practice and bench coaching, publicspeaking, summer camps and scheduling.All of VMI’s seniors graduated during Baker’s stay there and hewas part of an outstanding recruiting class in 1992-93, which sawthree freshmen make the starting lineup.In addition to editing and publishing a monthly basketballnewsletter (“Time Out”), Baker has published four booklets:“Power Post Play,” “Striving for Excellence,” and “The Best ofTime Out, Books One and Two.” This year, Baker released a oneof a kind basketball CD-Rom “The Best of Time Out”.Baker’s ties to the international players in his program comefrom doing camps and clinics abroad. He has conducted bothcamps and clinics in Belgium, France, Iceland, Luxembourg,Barbados and Costa Rica over the past 18 years. He has alsoserved as the U.S. advisor to the Belgium Women’s Olympic basketballteam.Baker comes from a strong sports family. Both his mother andfather were outstanding athletes and his dad, Walt, coached himat North Rowan High School where he graduated in 1974. Thefield house at North Rowan is named in his dad’s honor. Hisbrother, Chip, is a longtime assistant baseball coach at FloridaState.Baker and his wife, the former Tina Waters, reside in Concord.They have four children, Jamie (9), Madison (6) and Hannah (5)and Jacob (1).- 6 -


Bill Haggerty - Assistant CoachBill Haggerty is entering his 21st season as an assistant coach for the <strong>Catawba</strong> men’s basketball team. Inaddition to his duties under coach Baker, Haggerty assists in the coorrdination and promotion of <strong>Catawba</strong>’ssummer basketball camps, and has been active in securing basketball game sponsorships. For the past eightyears, Haggerty served as head coach for the <strong>Catawba</strong> cross country teams. Twice he has guided the mento a tie for second place and has had a runner qualify for the NCAA II Nationals four times. He is the first<strong>Catawba</strong> coach to be associated with two programs involved in NCAA Regionals in the same year, as themen’s basketball team also made the NCAAs in 2000-01.Prior to his current position, Haggerty coached the women’s basketballteam at <strong>Catawba</strong> (1984-87), turning a near-winless situationinto a respectable program. Haggerty’s best year with the LadyIndians was 1985-86, when he led <strong>Catawba</strong> to a 17-15 record, setting30 school records in the process. He joined coach Sam Moir on the men’s basketball staff in July1987. A 1979 <strong>Catawba</strong> graduate, Haggerty took the women’s basketball position at <strong>Catawba</strong> afterserving as recreation director for Jefferson Township, NJ. He was also assistant coach in basketball,football and softball at Jefferson Township High School. He was born in New York City’sBronx, but his family moved to Oak Ridge, NJ, during his childhood. Haggerty graduated formJefferson Township High School, where he was a runner on a state championship cross countryteam and played basketball. He later returned to his former school to coach another cross countrystate champion.Before transferring to <strong>Catawba</strong>, Haggerty attended Morris County Community <strong>College</strong> in NewJersey, where he also ran cross country and earned All-America honors. He ran in numerousmarathons, including Boston and New York City. Haggerty earned a bachelor’s degree in physicaleducation at <strong>Catawba</strong>.Haggerty resides in Advance with his wife, Carolyn, who returned to school and graduated from<strong>Catawba</strong> in 1994. They have three children, Amanda, a graduate of Duke University, and two sons Jared and Travis.Marvin MooreAssistant CoachMarvin Moore enters his seventhseason as an assistant coach with the<strong>Catawba</strong> men’s basketball program.He returned to <strong>Catawba</strong> after servingas an assistant for two years atHertford County High School.Moore is a 1999 graduate of<strong>Catawba</strong>, earning a bachelor of artsdegree in physical education. Aftergraduation, he played professionallyin Europe in Sweden and Monaco.While at <strong>Catawba</strong>, he was a threetimeAll-SAC performer as the Indians posted an 83-33 recordand advanced to the NCAA II regional tournament on two occasions.As a senior, Moore was the South Atlantic ConferencePlayer of the Year, setting a league record by scoring 650 points.He was also named all-region and All-American as well as beingselected as the SAC Male Athlete Year for the 1998-99 year. Hewas inducted to the SAC Hall of Fame in May of 2004.Moore ranks 11th all-time at <strong>Catawba</strong> in scoring with 1,556points. He holds school records for steals in a game, season andcareer and ranks third all-time in assists. At Hertford CountyHigh School, Moore was named all-conference and team MVPand helped the Bears to a conference title. Moore resides inConcord with his wife, Jessica.Freddie LynnVolunteer Assistant CoachFreddie Lynn enters his eighth seasonas an assistant coach with the<strong>Catawba</strong> Men’s <strong>Basketball</strong> program.He is graduate of Campbell University,where he earned a bachelor’s degreein sociology.After graduation, Lynn playedprofessionally for 16 years in Europe,15 in Belgium and one season inFrance. While at Campbell, Lynnhelped the Camels to one of their bestseasons with a 25-6 campaign.Lynn played at North Rowan High School for Walt Baker andhelped the Cavaliers to their first NPC Championship. This Is <strong>Catawba</strong> <strong>College</strong>ADMISSIONInquiries regarding admission to <strong>Catawba</strong> <strong>College</strong> arealways warmly welcomed. If you are interested in joiningthe <strong>Catawba</strong> community, you should apply for admissionanytime after your sixth semester of high school.<strong>Catawba</strong> follows the usual guidelines for “rollingadmissions” and, therefore, has no closing date for acceptingapplications. Applying early will ensure an earlyresponse from the college.In your application, you are asked to provide a widevariety of information relating to your academic and cocurricularbackground. This information is used to helpdetermine your potential to profit from, as well as contributeto, the <strong>Catawba</strong> community.You must complete a minimum of 16 units of highschool course work, 12 of which should be in academicsubjects. And that relationshipcontinues insmall, twice-weeklyclasses during the entire first semester.SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCEThe South Atlantic Conference is a group ofnine church-related colleges of similar size andathletic philosophy. As an all-sports conference,the league has grown into one of the premiersmall-college athletic conference in thenation.The 1993-94 year was extremely special in that the conferencebecame fully affiliated with the NCAA Division IIand is now eligible for national championships opportunitiesin all of its 14 sponsored sports.NCAA DIVISION IIThe National Collegiate AthleticAssociation is the organization through whichthe nation’s colleges and universities speakand act on athletic matters at the national level.It is a voluntary association of more than 1,000institutions, conferences, organizations and individualsdevoted to the sound administration of intercollegiate athletics.
