The university’s goals are to use the namewith honor and respect, increase supportive connections between CMU and Native Americans, and improve efforts to sensitize students, faculty, and staff to Native American traditions andcultures.Media representatives have been extremely cooperative as we have worked to addressthis important issue. In nearly all cases, print and broadcast reporters have supported CMU’sefforts to eliminate the use of symbols, headlines, and copy that present inappropriate andinaccurate images of Native Americans.Central Michigan University is grateful for your help, and we ask for your continuedcooperation and sensitivity. Season Outlook36Year three of the Brian Kelly era atCentral Michigan University finds theChippewa football program within reachof an accomplishment to which it has notlaid claim in two decades: consecutiveseasons recording at least six wins overDivision I-A opponents. With expanded bowl opportunitiesfor the Mid-American Conference anda demanding schedule that promisesnationwide exposure, anticipation isnear an all-time high in CMU circles asthe 2006 kickoff approaches. Still, Kellyknows his team must continue to developin order to challenge for a championship.“It’s very important that we continueto climb as a program,” Kelly said. “SixI-A wins last season was a great base, but now we need to continue to climb. The measure of a great program is aconsistency of winning. We will have notturned the corner until we are winningconsistently.”The Chippewas sampled successin 2005, posting the program’s firstfour-game winning streak in 11 yearsand entering November tied atop theMAC West Division standings. Followingheartbreaking losses to Northern Illinoisand Western Michigan, however, CMUrallied from a sluggish start for a gutsy31-24 overtime win at Ball State in theseason finale. With the program’s firstwinning season since 1998 in jeopardy, the Chippewas showcased their mettleby manufacturing a late special teamstouchdown, scoring in overtime andstonewalling the Ball State offense ondowns to secure the victory.Kelly hopes the gritty attitude he sawout of his club last November 19 willserve as a springboard into the 2006campaign. While CMU may not be theprognosticators’ first choice to win theWest in the preseason, Kelly believes histeam and program have taken significantsteps toward contending for a conferencetitle.“In year three of our program, wewant to build toward a level of ‘consciouscompetence,’” Kelly said. “Two years ago,we had an ‘unconscious incompetence’… we didn’t know that we didn’t knowwhat it takes to be a successful program. Now, our kids are aware what it takes tobe a championship program, and that isthat we have to work every single daytoward that goal.“We are not at a level where we canget full of ourselves,” he continued. “Westill must continue to work hard to getbetter every day. Championship programshave an ‘unconscious competence.’ Ourkids do not have that ingrained in themyet, but we are continuing to drive towardthat mindset.”Kelly has established two importantmeasuring sticks for his club in 2006:winning the Michigan MAC championshipand competing for an overall conferencetitle.“We need to win the Michigan MACchampionship,” he said. “That is aprimary goal for us this season. We arenow at a level where we can talk aboutbeating Eastern Michigan and WesternMichigan and being the preeminent MACprogram in the state of Michigan. Winningthe Michigan MAC championship, then,is a jumping off point toward winning aMAC championship. Those two go handin-handand are our two primary focusedgoals for the 2006 season.”Head CoachBrian KellyA challenging nonconference slatethat is highlighted by a season openerunder the lights at home against BostonCollege, as well as road trips to Michigan,Kentucky, and Temple, will prepare CMUfor what promises to be the most wideopenMAC title race in recent memory. The Chippewas will find themselves in thenational spotlight during the season’s firsttwo weekends, facing Boston College andMichigan squads that figure to enter theseason ranked in the top 25.“It’s important for this program tocontinue to gain national recognition, andthe only way to do that is continue to playtop-notch, well-respected opponents,”Kelly said. “We certainly have that inBoston College and Michigan. And,playing five times on ESPN is a greatcoup for us. What is our goal then? Notjust to play, but to win those games. Weschedule and play those games to beatthose teams.”Kelly’s club returns 33 lettermen, including 14 offensive and defensivestarters, from the 2005 squad. A newface will line up at quarterback, but fourreturning starters on the line, 1,000-yard rusher Ontario Sneed, and a cropof playmakers at the receiver positionwill provide the firepower on offense.Defensively, CMU’s top five tacklers froma year ago return, including All-Americandefensive end Daniel Bazuin and anathletic group of linebackers in the formof Red Keith, Doug Kress, and Ike Brown.Position-by-PositionQuarterbackAll eyes were on the battle undercenter during spring workouts, but the15 practice sessions in April only helpedsophomore Brian Brunner solidify hishold on the job entering fall camp. Anintelligent but untested signal-caller,Brunner’s knowledge of the playbookgave him an edge over the youngerDan LeFevour and Duane Brooks. Both redshirt freshmen will continue topush for playing time throughout thepreseason, as will heralded incomingfreshman Mike Canfield.“I am very comfortable with BrianBrunner at quarterback,” Kelly said.“He has a very good understandingof the system and is a leader who is

Season Outlookrespected by his teammates. He justneeds an opportunity to play and gainsome experience. The great thing is ouryounger kids will challenge him everyday in practice. That’s how you buildprograms—through competition.”Offensive LineFour starters return to an offensivefront that will be arguably the best linein the MAC. Senior left tackle Joe Staleyand senior center Drew Mormino arelegitimate pro prospects, while juniorguard Eric Tunney and sophomore righttackle Andrew Hartline both started all 11games last season. Tunney is expectedto move from left guard to right guardin 2006, with sophomore Adam Benkeand junior Mike Decker the frontrunnersto assume the left guard position. Truefreshman Jeff Maddux, one of thenation’s top offensive line prospects, could also make a case for playing timeearly in his career.“The success of the offensive lineis a tradition that has stood the test oftime here at CMU, and this group isas talented as any of the great CentralMichigan offensive lines,” Kelly said. “InJoe Staley and Drew Mormino you havetwo seniors who could be high draft picksnext spring. You have to feel good aboutDrew Morminohaving those two to anchorthe line. When you throwin two returning solid MACstarters in Andrew Hartlineand Eric Tunney, it bodesvery well for success at thatposition.”Running BackOntario Sneed puttogether arguably the bestrookie season of any playerin CMU history, rushing for1,065 yards and catching51 passes a year ago.Thrust into the starting role,Sneed had little choice butto become a playmaker inthe Chippewas’ offensiveattack. A year older andnearly 15 pounds heavier courtesy ofthe weight room, Sneed enters the 2006season physically more mature and witha support cast of capable backups thatcan help carry the load.“Last year, he was a do-everythingback for us,” Kelly said of Sneed. “We’rehoping to be able to spell him a littlemore this season. He really got a lotmore reps than we would have liked lastseason, but he handled himself extremelywell and did anything we asked of him. Now, we’re hoping to work in guys likeTroy Doane and L.J. Hopkins to cutback on the pounding he’ll takeduring the season.”Wide ReceiverVeterans Damien Linson andObed Cétoute, shifty playmakerJemmy Jasmin, and promisingfreshman Bryan Anderson willanchor a receiving corps thatprovides a blend of size andspeed. Linson developed into abig-play threat in 2005, catchingeight passes that coveredat least 25 yards, includingfour that covered at least 50yards. Cétoute, a 6-4, 212-pounder that was drafted bythe Canadian Football League’sToronto Argonauts in the spring, caught 15 passes in the finalthree games of 2005, includinga career-best effort of eightreceptions for 91 yards atOffensive StartersReturning/LostStarters Returning (7)Pos. Anderson and Jasmincan be utilized in a variety of roles out ofthe slot, with Anderson’s size (6-4, 200)and Jasmin’s speed (4.4 seconds in the40-yard dash) posing matchup problemsfor opposing secondaries.“Damien Linson is a guy who can pushdown the field and can track the football,”Kelly said. “He’s obviously a deep threatwho everyone saw emerge last year. Thegreat thing about him is that he makesbig plays in big games. Obed Cétouteshowed late in the year that he can bea nightmare for opposing defenses withhis size and speed, particularly down inthe red zone. I think all the pieces are inplace for him to have a breakout season.Bryan Anderson and Jemmy Jasmin aregoing to share time at the slot receiver, and the key with them is that they canboth run after the catch and really creatematchup problems.”Defensive LineJust two starters return on thedefensive front, but both are premierplayers in the MAC at their position.End Daniel Bazuin and tackle StevenFriend make up one-half of a physicallyimposing line that has keyed theChippewas’ improved play on defense.Ronnie Ekdahl, a former walk-on whohas worked his way onto scholarship, ispenciled in as the starter next to Friend, while junior De’Onte Burnam returns tohis starting role opposite Bazuin. Beyondthat, I think one of the most underrateddefensive players in the MAC is StevenFriend. He doesn’t get the publicity thathe probably deserves, but I know that ourfirst-team offensive line had a hard timeblocking him during the spring. He drawsa lot of attention and helps create a lot ofone-on-one matchups for Bazuin.”LinebackerBolstering the front seven is an athleticand physical linebacking corps that ranksamong the top returning position groupsin the conference. Junior Red Keith andseniors Ike Brown and Doug Kress returnto their starting roles after recording104, 73, and 73 tackles, respectively, in2005. Keith and Kress both check in over235 pounds and are run-stuffers, whileBrown, who came to CMU as a runningback, can harass opposing offenses byblitzing or dropping into pass coverage.“At linebacker we have four verycapable players in Red Keith, DougKress, Chris Wohlgamuth, and LeythonWilliams,” Kelly said. “We can rotate allthose guys in and keep people fresh. That depth was a big reasonwhy we did not allow atouchdown in the secondhalf of six of our final eightgames last season.“Ike Brown is an inbetweensort of guy whobrings an attitude to ourdefense,” he added. “He isone of our most physicalplayers and just plays fast.He is certainly our catalyston defense and brings theenthusiasm that all gooddefenses need to have.”SecondaryJust one starter returnsin the secondary, and he willbe playing a new position, but Kelly hopes to usethe “addition by subtraction” theory inimproving his squad’s pass defense.Pacino Horne, who made 66 tackles fromhis free safety spot in 2005, will moveover to corner this season. He, however, will be joined in the secondary by threenew starters.“In Curtis Cutts and Pacino Horne wehave two veterans in the secondary,”Kelly said. “Pacino is back at his naturalposition, while Cutts is starting to developat the strong safety position and will bea steadying influence for our youngerplayers. Josh Gordy has nailed down theother corner spot, while the race atthe other safety is still open. CalvinHissong, Aaron Carr, and a coupleof incoming freshmen will competefor playing time there.”Special TeamsJunior punter Tony Mikulecand sophomore placekicker RickAlbreski return to their startingroles on the specialty units.Mikulec, entering his third seasonas the starter, placed 18 puntsinside the opponents’ 20-yard linelast season and forced opposingreturners to make 17 fair catches.Albreski, meanwhile, hit 10-of-19field goals and 31-of-32 pointafterattempts as a true freshmanlast season. Incoming freshmanBrett Hartmann will compete forplaying time as both a punter andplacekicker.“We wanted to challenge those guysa little bit,” Kelly said of Mikulec andAlbreski. “Brett Hartmann will challengeand push those guys to the level theyneed to be at to be successful. Theyboth have to get better and we expectimprovement from them just as we doeveryone else in our program. Now, withthat said, we are very confident in bothTony and Rick and excited that we haveboth of them back.”Linson and Jasmin give CMU optionsin the return game. Linson is the onlyChippewa to return a punt for a scorein the past 23 years, including a Kelly/Shorts Stadium-record 78-yarder againstOhio in 2005, but Jasmin was averaging24.4 yards per kickoff return prior to hisinjury.“Damien Linson has returned a puntfor a touchdown each of the last twoyears, but Jemmy Jasmin had won thatjob before suffering his injury,” Kelly said.“Both of them are very skilled, but Jasminwill likely be our go-to guy in the returngame. We want to give him as manyopportunities to handle the football aspossible.”Ike Brown

Season OutlookNews and NotesShooting for SixOn the surface, the Chippewas’6-5 overall record in 2005was significant simply because Pit marked the program’s firstKwinning mark since 1998.
