JAGWIRE GLEN
Principal’s Message
Spring is definitely in the air and the athletic fields are once again alive with
activity! As the weather continues to tease us with temperatures in the 70’s,
the Jaguars are busier than ever. The music department is headed into festival
season, the drama department is getting Footloose, and spring athletes are
ready for competition. It’s hard to believe we are already mid-way through the
third marking period. As we continue to keep the focus on a successful
inaugural year, we are also busy planning for year two. In just a few months
Glen Allen will welcome approximately 400 freshmen and 24 new teachers.
While we will not be close to capacity, our learning community continues to
grow in numbers and spirit.
We are proud of the accomplishments of all our students and the beginning of
each new season brings a renewed sense of school pride. Our students fill the
stands and auditorium to support their peers and are very conscientious about
giving back to the Glen Allen Community. There are many opportunities in the
next few weeks to see our students in action and we invite you come out and
support the Jaguars. Grab your teal and black and join us for an exciting
spring! Go Jags!
Glen Allen High School Library
Mission: Ensuring that students and staff are lifelong readers and effective
users of ideas and information.
David Baldacci will be reading and speaking at GAHS on April 5th
as part of the All Henrico Reads program. Stay tuned for more
information on this exciting author. The Camel Club is available in
the library for students to borrow to read before April 5th. We will be
looking forward to seeing you at the evening event. The program
will be held at Glen Allen High School. Middle School students will
listen to Mr. Baldacci in the morning, and high school students will
have their opportunity to hear Mr. Baldacci in the afternoon. A
program and book signing will be held in the auditorium that night for the community to come and hear David
Baldacci and he has promised to stay until every book is signed! I look forward to seeing many of you at the
different events.
A Salsa Band, African Drums, and Theater IV, OH MY!!!! These were just a few of
the events presented during Black History Month in February. An announcement was
made every day and books were on display. Each person talked about during the
announcements had a biography written about him/her or had written a book. How
exciting to have the opportunity to show off my collection to the students!
During the month of February, The 50 th anniversary of To Kill a Mockingbird was celebrated
with a lecture by Charles Shields who wrote Mockingbird: A Portrait of Harper Lee and I am
Scout. Mary Badham, the original Scout from the movie with Gregory Peck was in town. It was
a wonderful presentation and now the library owns autographed copies of both of Shield’s books
and an autographed picture of a movie scene with Gregory Peck and Scout.
done and now we need fresh new ideas. If you are interested in helping with any of the projects we
will be doing, please contact Mr. Stone or Mrs. Branyon to get involved. We welcome all help. Our
first project is serving dinner on April 1 st for the Spring Musical Footloose. We will be splitting the
next project is organizing a Powder Puff Game in May among the participating schools. We also
hope to build picnic tables that day for Habitat for Humanity and to collect recyclable cans for profit.
News from Glen Allen High School’s Marketing Department
This year our marketing students formed a very successful business partnership
with the Tuckernut Square Chick-fil-A store. The students created new Chick-fil-
A food products, and pitched their ideas in a very successful sales campaign to
Mr. John Worden, Tuckernut store owner, Mr. Rocky Marrin, Tuckernut store
Marketing Manager, and Mr. Will McFadden, Chick-fil-A Marketing executive
who flew in from the Atlanta corporate office.
Our class also recently took part in a challenge to sign up at least 150 Jaguars for
text message promotional alerts in a short period of time. We took the challenge
and using newly learned marketing skills, beat the challenge! Our prize consists
of a free Chick-fil-A lunch! You can help us increase our totals by texting
IMPORTANT MEETING TO DISCUSS HCPS MATH CURRICULUM!
Are you aware that Henrico County Public School’s math curriculum has changed at all levels?
Do you know what impact this will have on your child?
If you want to understand or know more about Henrico’s K-12 math curriculum, please mark your calendars for
MONDAY, MARCH 14 TH AT 7:00p.m., MOODY MIDDLE SCHOOL. A meeting is being held with HCPS Superintendent
Russo, and others, to:
have informative dialogue about the current HCPS K-12 math curriculum
better understand the philosophy and intent behind the K-12 math curriculum
discuss parental concerns and address questions
The meeting is a result of The Lay Advisory Committee identifying and pursuing the need for an in-depth explanation and
communication between HCPS and the community as to the direction of math instruction in our county. Parents and
teachers have raised concerns to members of LAC. These concerns include:
an increasing number of current high school students do not appear adequately prepared for the rigor of high
school, and then college level math.
the increased placement of students in Algebra I in 8 th grade, along with the compacting/compression of some of
the math curriculum, starting in elementary school, appears to present challenges for many students at all levels.
The program of math instruction affects ALL of our children, and this meeting will be relevant to all. The quality and
effectiveness of math curriculum and math instruction have tremendous implications, not only for the success of our
children, but also for a productive, competitive business community and healthy society in general.
This meeting represents an opportunity for parents and community members to hear the HCPS plan and then
address any concerns to better ensure the HCPS plan represents a sound, “best practices”program of math
instruction that will enable our children to learn and master math “for life”. Please attend if you are able.
HOSPITALITY
The Hospitality Committee continued to be hard at work over the 2 nd nine weeks –hosting several events during the last
few months. We began with brunch on November 2 nd for Parent-Teacher Conference Day with several varieties of
wonderful quiches, desserts and assorted breads. The faculty was so impressed with our efforts!
During the week before Winter Break, we contributed to the Glen Allen Holiday Café which was set up in the Chorus
Room to offer the faculty & staff a fun and festive gathering place during the first half of December. On Monday,
December 13, Daylight Donuts again very generously donated 7 dozen delicious donuts to provide a great way to kick
off the week. Our amazing Committee hosted an appetizer lunch on Tuesday, December 14, which was a huge hit with
everyone! Ham biscuits, meatballs & appetizers of every description graced the tables. And on Thursday, December 16,
we were all set to provide a sweet break with our Cookie Café –but the weather did not cooperate as Winter Break
started early due to snow.
However, we gave the faculty a “snow-check”on the Cookie Café and provided that for Valentine’s Day. We were excited
to show the faculty & staff what a “sweet”group they are!
We are planning more special events for our wonderful faculty and staff, culminating in Teacher Appreciation Week from
May 2 nd –6 th . During that week, we will be providing treats, lunches, gift baskets and gift cards for the unbelievably
talented staff here at Glen Allen High School. More information will be coming soon, but please consider donating a $10
gift card –our goal is to present a gift card to every member of the staff that week to show our tremendous appreciation
for their professionalism and dedication. If you would like to be part of the Hospitality Committee, or if you would like to
make a donation for Teacher Appreciation Week, please email volunteers@gahsptsa.com –and a heartfelt thank you to
all who have contributed so generously to our efforts so far this year!
Recently, the Specialty Center students at Glen Allen took on a new challenge. Their task was to write “their
sentence.” Daniel Pink, author of Drive, had a contest charging people to write in one sentence what they
wanted their legacy to be. As a class, the students looked to the past at historical figures and hypothesized
what their sentences may have been. After a day or two of thinking, analyzing, and reflecting the center
students went to work and began creating their own legacies. The sentences were so profound and noteworthy
that they were placed in the art gallery to display for the Specialty Center Open House. The sentences that
were created were not only a reflection of the incredible young people walking the halls of Glen Allen High
School but also an indication of the wonderful things to come for the youth of today and the realization that they
can and will make a difference in the world.
