TECHNICAL INFORMATIONEnclosure Type DesignationsEnclosures serve the dual purpose of protecting personnel from incidental contact with the enclosed electrical equipment and protecting the enclosedequipment against specified environmental conditions. Enclosures are rated for use in specific environmental conditions by NEMA, UL, CSA and theIEC. The major rating systems used are the NEMA Type Numbers and the IEC Enclosure Classification Designation. The IEC Enclosure Classification Designation — IP Suitability RatingsThe IP Suitability Ratings are a system for classifying the degree of protection provided by enclosures of electrical equipment. The higher the number inthe rating, the greater the degree of protection provided by the enclosure. Note that the rating will ONLY apply to properly installed equipment. The chartbelow defines the numerals in the IP Code.1. The First Numeral indicates the degree of protection for persons against access to hazardous parts inside the enclosure and/or against the ingress ofsolid foreign objects2. The Second Numeral indicates the degree of protection of equipment inside enclosures against damage from the ingress of water.Elements of the IP CodeMeaning for the Protection of EquipmentCode Letters First Number Second NumberIngress Protection Against Ingress of Solid Foreign Objects Against Ingress of Waterwith Harmful EffectsIP O – Non protected O – Non protected1 – ≥ 50 mm diameter 1 – Vertically dripping2 – ≥ 12.5 mm diameter 2 – Dripping (15 °tilted)3 – ≥ 2.5 mm diameter 3 – Spraying4 – ≥1.0 mm 4 – Splashing5 – Dust-protected 5 – Jetting6 – Dust-tight 6 – Power jetting7 – Temporary immersion8 – Continuous immersionNote: > denotes greater than or equal to.Example: IP 54 Suitability Rating = Ingress Protection/Dust-protected/SplashingEnclosure Types for Non-Hazardous LocationsNATIONAL ELECTRICALMANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATIONNEMA Standards Publication No. 250-1991Enclosures for Electrical Equipment (1000 Volts max.)Type Intended Use andDesignation DescriptionAn enclosure is a surroundingcase constructed to provide adegree of protection to personnelagainst incidental contactwith the enclosed equipmentand to provide a degree of protectionto enclosed equipmentagainst the specified environmentalconditions.Type 1Type 2Type 3Enclosures are intended for indooruse primarily to provide a degreeof protection against limitedamounts of falling dirt.Enclosures are intended for indooruse primarily to provide a degreeof protection against limitedamounts of falling water or dirt.Enclosures are intended for outdooruse primarily to provide adegree of protection against rain, sleet, windblown dust, and damagefrom external ice formation.UNDERWRITERS LABORATORIES INC.UL50Standard for Enclosures for Electrical Equipment(10th Edition)Type Intended Use andDesignation DescriptionEnclosure — A surrounding caseconstructed to provide a degree ofprotection against incidental contactwith the enclosed equipmentand to provide a degree of protectionto the enclosed equipmentagainst specified environmentalconditions.A complete enclosure shall beprovided for all live parts that maybe housed in it.
