Curriculum Guide• Please mark your calendars for this year’ssummer registration. (Dates are provided onthe front of your curriculum guide).• <strong>Homewood</strong> Middle School Website• Parent Resources• Curriculum Guide• Schedule: Students will take language artsand math for the entire school year in 96minute blocks. Science and social studies willbe offered in 96 minute blocks on a 9 weekrotation.


Core Courses• Language Arts Grade 7• Pre-Algebra or Pre-Algebra Team• Social Studies Grade 7• Science Grade 7


Language Arts Grade 7• Strong Emphasis on Writing• Students will write essays that require textualand research based support for their beliefs.• Students will write complex sentences toachieve sentence variety and increase“readability.”• Students will read books from a variety ofgenres.


Summer ReadingSummer Reading will be required.Specific information will be provided at alater date.


Pre-Algebra Grade 7• Pre-Algebra is an advanced course in7 th grade for most schools in Alabama.• Students will perform basic operationswith integers, solve multi-step linearequations and inequalities, interpretdata from populations, and determineprobabilities from events .


Pre-Algebra Math TeamGrade 7• In addition to the learning targets thatare taught in the pre-algebra 7 th gradecourse, students will be taughtadditional rigorous content to preparethem for Math Team competitions.• The pre-algebra 7 th grade content istaught at a rapid pace which allowstime for additional content and practicerelated to Math Team competitions.


Science Grade 7• 7 th grade Science is an indepth study of lifescience that includes cells, anatomy, ecology,genetics, and the classification of livingthings.• Students will participate in 1-2 labs per week.• Students will work individually and in smallgroups to complete labs and lab reports.• Lab reports will include a detailed descriptionof the lab, analysis of results, and studentcommendations and recommendations.


Social Studies Grade 7• Two Courses: civics and world geography• Civics- Students will study citizenship,representative democracy, law , and personaleconomics.• World Geography- Students will study thephysical nature of the world and howhumans and the environment interact witheach other.


Physical Educationand Electives• Physical Education is a required course for 7 thgrade.• Band is our only yearlong elective course.• Elective courses are offered on a nine weekrotation. Please refer to the curriculum guidefor a description of each elective course.

7 th Grade Math Team• 7 th Grade Math Team is a competitive team thatchallenges students in the area of math.• In 7 th grade students have the option to takeMath Team as their math class.• Math Team is designed for students who highlyexcel in the area of math. (Outside the boxthinkers!)• Qualities of students who are successful on mathteam include: Quick Mental Math Skills, A-Average in 6 th Grade &he/she ENJOYS MATH!


7 th Grade Math Team• The Pre-Algebra Math Team class covers thePre-Algebra curriculum in about the half the timeand spends the remaining part of the yearpreparing for tournaments.• Students are required to participate intournaments which are held on Saturdays.• The tournaments involve a written test and thisscore counts towards their class grade.• Summer Memorization Packet (Test the firstweek of school)


Prognosis Test• New 6 th Grade Prognosis Test• 60 minutes• 50 challenging questions• 10 Questions from each of the 5 main standardclusters in our new common core curriculum:• Numerical Operations• Expressions and Equations• Ratios and Proportions• Geometry• Probability and Statistics


Math Team Data• As 6 th graders, most students make A’s inmath.• A score of 71 or above on the mathprognosis test is an indicator that the studentwill be successful in the math team class.• A math STAR grade equivalent score of >10 thgrade (Scale Score = 970) is the averagescore of current 7 th grade math teamstudents.
