Gifted Education ServicesC. D. <strong>Hylton</strong>’s gifted services include a seminar program,advanced course offerings and individual conferences thatfocus on the individual needs of the student.The seminar program is a county-wide program inwhich small groups of 8-12 students meet, in a studentcenteredenvironment, to think about and discuss avariety of concepts centered around an interdisciplinarycurriculum. Each grade level focuses on a specifictheme and includes work in the various disciplinesincluding art, architecture, music, mathematics,science, history and language. The program providesenrichment and extension to the classroom instruction.Interested in being identified for Gifted Education services?Students may be referred for Gifted Education servicesby administrators, school counselors, teachers, parents,peers, and community members. Students may alsorefer themselves. Referral may be made at anytimeduring the school year and even during the summer.We identify students at all grade levels. Once a referralis made, written permission must be obtained fromparents or guardians in order for theidentification/placement process to begin.The identification/placement file includes thestudent’s school records, standardized test scores,grades and information from teachers, parents and thestudent. Other information (samples of student workor self-initiated projects) is also considered.Student case profiles are developed by <strong>Hylton</strong>’s <strong>School</strong>Level Committee and forwarded to the Division LevelCommittee for a decision. Both committees are composedof representatives from administration and counseling, aswell as members of the gifted education staff and classroomteachers. National Honor SocietyThe National Honor Society organization shall have as itspurpose, to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to renderservice to the community, to promote leadership and todevelop character in students.To be considered for membership, a student must be ajunior or a senior with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and beenrolled in at least 5 academic classes. D. <strong>Hylton</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> Absence PolicyWhat to do if a student ……is absent from school (Absence)Within two days of returning to school, the student must present a written note, stating the reason for the absence,signed and dated by the parent/guardian with a daytime phone number. All notes must be submitted to theAttendance Office. All notes submitted after the 3 rd day will need to be approved by Ms. Weiler, the AssistantPrincipal responsible for attendance.…arrives to school after 7:30 a.m. (Tardy)If a student arrives to school after 7:30 a.m., they must report to the main/front office and obtain a tardy pass. If thestudent arrives to school with an EXCUSED tardy (signed note from parent/guardian) they will report to theAttendance Office instead of the main/front office. If a student continues to accumulate excessive excused tardiesduring a marking period (10 excused per semester), a doctor’s note may be required.…becomes ill while in schoolStudents who become ill during school need to obtain a pass from their teacher to report to the clinic and sign out.The clinic will contact the parent and an early dismissal will be granted.…needs to leave school early (Early Dismissal)If a student needs to leave school early, the request must be made through the Attendance Office. It must include thereason for leaving, the time for the dismissal, and the parent/guardian signature including a daytime phone number forverification. The early dismissal will only be granted after verbal confirmation is received from the parent/guardian.Parents should not call during the school day to have students released early. The student must bring in a signed note from the parent/guardian including the reason for the absence,the dates of the absence and a daytime phone number where the parent/guardian will be contacted for verificationpurposes. If a student requests work prior to the absence, the student is expected to turn in the work onreturn to school. The student should access their classroom Web pages to stay current in their classes.Per the Code of Virginia Law §22.1-254.1 and §22.1-279.3 and <strong>Prince</strong> <strong>William</strong><strong>County</strong> Regulation 722-1, any student in grades nine through twelve who missten or more class periods in any one class for the year, excused or unexcused,and who have completed little or no make-up work or instructional time(Saturday school), may fail that class for the year. Athletic Family Pass – Student Athletic Seasonal Sport Pass – Punch PassATHLETIC EVENT FAMILY PASS: Support your team and school and avoid standing in longlines by Purchasing an “Athletic Event Family Pass”. Each member of your immediate family willhave their own pass. The cost of the pass for a family of up to five is $140 and will allow admittance toregular <strong>Hylton</strong> events only.
