Dear Friends of <strong>Lovelane</strong>,<br />
As one year ends, and another begins, it is crucial for non-profit corporations to<br />
reflect upon and determine if set goals and objectives have been achieved. I am<br />
proud that <strong>Lovelane</strong> has successfully maintained its core values and quality therapeutic riding program,<br />
while adjusting to the necessary operational and business growth of a maturing organization. The Board’s<br />
primary responsibility to you, our donors, is to nurture the implementation of our mission, preserving its<br />
integrity and sustainability, while supporting new strategies for program development, outreach and the<br />
security of <strong>Lovelane</strong>’s future.<br />
This past year, in addition to the development of innovative adjunct programming and reaching out<br />
to new populations of the special needs community, <strong>Lovelane</strong> has instituted a capital needs assessment,<br />
continued to provide vital tuition assistance and invested in leadership and staff development. The<br />
fundraising office is constantly creating new ideas and opportunities to support our mission, including<br />
the newly established Stable of Leadership; our major gifts effort. I can assure you that our dedicated<br />
staff make every day count for the children and families we serve.<br />
It is important to note, however, that U.S. economists are projecting a “less than stellar outlook” for 2010,<br />
which presents funding challenges for non-profits. <strong>Lovelane</strong> has been able to sustain its programming<br />
through the wonderful generosity of our loyal donors. We remain hopeful that you will continue to<br />
shepherd <strong>Lovelane</strong> as a charity of choice in the coming years, so that we can continue to provide<br />
much needed services to these deserving children. On behalf of the entire <strong>Lovelane</strong> family, thank you!<br />

Dear Friends,<br />
First, let me say “thank you” to all of you who have given so generously of your<br />
time, money and passion. I am honored to write to you as the newly appointed<br />
Executive Director and as I consider this past year, I realize that the challenge of my new role is<br />
reflective of <strong>Lovelane</strong>’s journey. It is a journey of balance and of protecting our core values while<br />
we secure our future.<br />
As <strong>Program</strong> Director, I have been focused on maintaining and enhancing our program and providing<br />
safe, effective therapy. We remain committed to our individualized, goal-oriented programming,<br />
while responding to the “whole child” and preserving an environment where our riders and their<br />
families are embraced and nurtured.<br />
As Executive Director, I am focused on “big picture” issues; program quality, staff development,<br />
financial sustainability and facility maintenance. As I do this, I pledge to stay true to our innate<br />
“specialness”, that quality which sets us apart. Our goal is to build on this solid foundation to<br />
establish an organization that will be here for generations of <strong>Lovelane</strong> riders to come.<br />
My fundamental hope is that we can safeguard all that is precious and breathtaking about the<br />
work we do, while simultaneously addressing the needs of a strong, responsible and fiscally sound<br />
organization with integrity and passion. My heartfelt thanks and best wishes to you all.

Message from the Treasurer<br />
Once again this year, my message is one of deep gratitude to <strong>Lovelane</strong>’s<br />
supporters. While the national and regional economies were in turmoil for most<br />
of the past year, <strong>Lovelane</strong>’s financial situation remains stable. With a strong and<br />
in-demand program, careful expense management, and continued loyal support<br />
from our donors, we were able to report a positive bottom line and add to our<br />
capital base in the past fiscal year. We also made appropriate investments in<br />
the <strong>Program</strong>’s physical assets – to preserve their value and to enhance the<br />
<strong>Lovelane</strong> experience for all of its constituents. Additionally, in 2009 we formalized<br />
our tuition assistance program – ensuring that no one who could benefit from our<br />
terrific staff and programming would be turned away for financial reasons. The<br />
Board continues to regularly and carefully monitor the <strong>Program</strong>’s operating results<br />
and the performance, safety and soundness of our reserves, always mindful of<br />
the faith that our supporters have placed in <strong>Lovelane</strong> and its mission.<br />
We hope that you will continue your support of <strong>Lovelane</strong> and we are equally<br />
hopeful that you know how truly grateful we are for your support. Please be<br />

Tuition Assistance • • •<br />
We believe that children should not be denied<br />
access to critical and valuable services due to an<br />
inability to pay. Since our inception we have<br />
embraced the practice of offering tuition<br />
assistance to those families who cannot<br />
afford our services. Largely unfunded by<br />
traditional insurance, therapeutic riding is<br />
a particularly costly form of therapy and<br />
nearly 40% of our families require some<br />
level of assistance. Each year a line item<br />
in our operating budget is identified for<br />
tuition assistance and a portion of the<br />
proceeds from the annual Susan McDaniel<br />
Run for Love is earmarked to fund this<br />

From autism to rare genetic disorders and<br />
from developmental delays to cerebral palsy,<br />
the children at <strong>Lovelane</strong> all live with some kind<br />
of significant challenge. The strength of our<br />
program centers on the individualized nature of<br />
our lessons, our ongoing commitment to safety and<br />
our belief in working hand in hand with our<br />
families to meet the personal therapeutic goals of<br />
each child. We believe so firmly in the value<br />
of what we do that we work to reach new<br />
populations and include individuals who<br />
might not otherwise have the opportunity to<br />
participate in this experience. This past year<br />
we invited students from Mother Caroline<br />
Academy to the program, worked with children<br />
from Perkins School for the Blind, participated<br />
in medical research programs, and designed<br />
summer workshops for new populations.<br />

Therapy Team • • •<br />
The core of our program is the therapy<br />
team consisting of instructor, volunteers<br />
and horse. Each member of the team contributes<br />
a vital component to the experience.<br />
We honor our over 70 volunteers who give their<br />
time, energy and love selflessly to the children<br />
who ride here each week. Our specially trained<br />
horses respond to voice command so that<br />
children improve speech and communication<br />
skills. Our instructors are well trained, most<br />
are certified through North American<br />
<strong>Riding</strong> for the Handicapped Association<br />
(NARHA) and some have other professional<br />
therapeutic licensure. We promote continuing<br />
education opportunities and listen carefully<br />
to the needs of every team member as they<br />
work to help each student meet his or her<br />
therapeutic goal. The recent addition of<br />
speech and language pathology consultants<br />
has significantly enhanced the team and<br />
improved the experience for many of our riders.<br />

Facility Management • • •<br />
Built in 2004 and situated on 5 acres of<br />
land, our building was designed expressly<br />
and uniquely for special needs children.<br />
We are the stewards of this gift and tasked<br />
with its care so that it will still be here for<br />
generations of riders to come. In 2009 we<br />
commissioned a Capital <strong>Needs</strong> Assessment<br />
to identify the maintenance and upkeep<br />
required for the next ten years. Results<br />
show that we will need to spend up to<br />
$60,000 per year on these costs. This fall<br />
we replaced the footing in both indoor<br />
and outdoor arenas at a cost of $40,000.<br />
Significant repairs were made to the<br />
electric fencing and structural improvements<br />
were made to our manure area.<br />

Leading the Way….<br />
This year we unveiled <strong>Lovelane</strong>’s new<br />
annual giving society; The Stable of<br />
Leadership. The Stable recognizes<br />
those donors who support us with<br />
annual gifts of $5,000 or more.<br />
Stable donors’ leadership gifts reflect<br />
a strong commitment to our mission,<br />
and an investment in the long-term<br />
security and growth of our program.<br />
These gifts will create a foundation<br />
from which to build a sustainable<br />
future for <strong>Lovelane</strong>’s young athletes.<br />

During the fall of 2009 <strong>Lovelane</strong> lost a dear friend. Orcland<br />
Supreme Echo, known simply as Echo, died after many years<br />
of selfless service to the children of <strong>Lovelane</strong>. Echo was both<br />
a champion show horse and a gifted therapeutic riding horse;<br />
in fact, Echo was <strong>Lovelane</strong>’s first program horse. These gifts<br />
were given in his honor and will serve as a legacy to his<br />
memory. Contributions to this fund are dedicated to the<br />
ongoing care of <strong>Lovelane</strong>’s herd of 12 therapy horses.<br />

With over 350 registered participants, the 2009 Susan McDaniel Run for<br />
Love was the largest in the event’s 14-year history. An essential component to<br />
the Run for Love’s success was the support we received from Kevin Youkilis<br />
Hits for Kids via the Youk’s Kids Challenge: a $50,000 match of all registration<br />
fees, pledges and donations. We would like to thank all our donors<br />
who not only met the match but beat it by $10,000, raising over $60,000<br />
(resulting in $110,000 for our program). Our gratitude also to the McDaniel<br />
family whose ongoing support in memory of their daughter Susan inspires<br />

2009 marked the fifth anniversary of our move into the<br />
facility on Baker Bridge Road in Lincoln. So much has<br />
changed since the days in the back yard barn in Weston<br />
and because of this magnificent facility our capacity has<br />
doubled and therapy sessions can continue uninterrupted<br />
by inclement weather. To commemorate this milestone,<br />
we threw ourselves a birthday party in the barn. The<br />
generous supporters listed below made gifts in honor of<br />
our birthday; a great birthday present to the children<br />
who ride with us!<br />
“M.E. started riding at <strong>Lovelane</strong> this past September and<br />
watching her participate in the “birthday bash” demonstration,<br />
it was clear that the <strong>Lovelane</strong> environment has made her<br />
feel confident and secure. The celebration gave the <strong>Lovelane</strong><br />
community a chance to glimpse some of what happens there,<br />
but it allowed M.E. a chance to feel the beaming pride of<br />

Our volunteers are the heart of <strong>Lovelane</strong>, providing over 11,000 hours yearly<br />
in service to our program. Whether it is by side walking during lessons,<br />
assisting with horse and barn chores or administrative work, these extraordinary<br />

Maintaining our barn, keeping the<br />
horses fed, the lights on, the staff<br />
paid and the students thriving<br />
demands a constant outpouring of<br />
funds. Tuition income represents<br />
less than half of <strong>Lovelane</strong>’s annual<br />
revenue. We rely on the generosity<br />
of our committed donors to meet our<br />
operating costs. Over 50% of our<br />
general operating budget is provided<br />
through event revenue and individual,<br />
corporate and foundation contributions.<br />
