“YOU CAN BE DOING ANYTHING FROM PROCUREMENTS,TO STOCK CONTROL, AIR MOVEMENTS OR IN A SQUADRONGETTING SPARES FOR AIRCRAFT.”AIR FORCE RESERVE (AR)Air F<strong>or</strong>ce Reservists are the part-time componen<strong>to</strong>f the Air F<strong>or</strong>ce. The Air F<strong>or</strong>ce Reserve allowsyou <strong>to</strong> get <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> a strong team atmosphere;w<strong>or</strong>k with high-tech equipment; build upon yourexist<strong>in</strong>g personal <strong>an</strong>d professional skills, as well ashave fun <strong>an</strong>d improve your fitness while you do it.The Air F<strong>or</strong>ce Reserve tra<strong>in</strong>s <strong>an</strong>d w<strong>or</strong>ks rightalongside the perm<strong>an</strong>ent Air F<strong>or</strong>ce <strong>an</strong>d <strong>in</strong> mostcases, your job will mirr<strong>or</strong> that of the perm<strong>an</strong>entAir F<strong>or</strong>ce.There is n<strong>or</strong>mally a w<strong>or</strong>k arr<strong>an</strong>gement <strong>to</strong> fit withyour life <strong>an</strong>d because it’s locally based, you c<strong>an</strong>experience Air F<strong>or</strong>ce life without w<strong>or</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g farfrom home.Entry <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the Air F<strong>or</strong>ce Reserve is dependentupon vac<strong>an</strong>cies at the time, but <strong>in</strong>cludes jobs suchas adm<strong>in</strong>istration, logistics <strong>an</strong>d some technicalbased jobs. Selection st<strong>an</strong>dards are the same asthose jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the perm<strong>an</strong>ent Air F<strong>or</strong>ce.A specialist group with<strong>in</strong> the Air F<strong>or</strong>ceReserve is the Ground <strong>Defence</strong> Reserve Group(GRDefRG). This group conta<strong>in</strong>s ReserveGround <strong>Defence</strong> Officer’s <strong>an</strong>d Airfield <strong>Defence</strong>Guards who f<strong>or</strong>m a highly skilled, close-knitteam capable of defend<strong>in</strong>g the Air F<strong>or</strong>ce’sbases, aircraft, <strong>in</strong>stallations <strong>an</strong>d personnel.Primarily the personnel <strong>in</strong> this group specialise<strong>in</strong> ground defence <strong>an</strong>d the <strong>in</strong>struction of grounddefence related skills. Due <strong>to</strong> the requirementf<strong>or</strong> GRDefRG members <strong>to</strong> be able <strong>to</strong> deploy ata sh<strong>or</strong>t notice, you’ll undergo 11 months of fulltimetra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>d then be required <strong>to</strong> undertakea m<strong>in</strong>imum period of days a year part-timeservice with tax-free pay. To be part of theGRDefRG, you’ll need <strong>to</strong> live with<strong>in</strong> a three hourdrive of <strong>an</strong> Air F<strong>or</strong>ce Base that has a ReserveADG Rifle Flight. At present there are noReserve Rifle Flights <strong>in</strong> the N<strong>or</strong>thern Terri<strong>to</strong>ry.4


BUSINESS AND ADMINISTRATIONPERSONNEL CAPABILITY SPECIALIST(CLERK)Not every job <strong>in</strong> the Air F<strong>or</strong>ce revolves aroundfast jets. As a Personnel Capability Specialist<strong>in</strong> the Air F<strong>or</strong>ce you’ll be <strong>in</strong> charge of provid<strong>in</strong>gadm<strong>in</strong>istrative supp<strong>or</strong>t <strong>to</strong> other personnel,general adm<strong>in</strong>istration <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g c<strong>or</strong>respondence,education (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g look<strong>in</strong>g after technicalpublications), <strong>an</strong>d tend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> the adm<strong>in</strong>istrativeside of the f<strong>in</strong><strong>an</strong>cial <strong>an</strong>d medical needs of Air F<strong>or</strong>cepersonnel. (GE), (AR).TRAINING: After recruit tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, you’ll undergo aBasic Personnel Capability Specialist Course whereyou’ll learn about personnel service entitlements,<strong>or</strong>ders, publications, c<strong>or</strong>respondence <strong>an</strong>d files,the f<strong>or</strong>ms of service c<strong>or</strong>respondence writ<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>an</strong>dgeneral service matters <strong>in</strong> addition <strong>to</strong> receiv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong><strong>in</strong>troduction <strong>to</strong> computer database m<strong>an</strong>agement.LOGISTICS AND SUPPORTSUPPLYAs a Supplier <strong>in</strong> the Air F<strong>or</strong>ce you have theopp<strong>or</strong>tunity <strong>to</strong> w<strong>or</strong>k <strong>in</strong> a variety of jobs that willrotate as your career progresses. You could be <strong>in</strong>charge of process<strong>in</strong>g base dem<strong>an</strong>ds f<strong>or</strong> generals<strong>to</strong>res <strong>an</strong>d all types of aircraft spares. Whereas <strong>in</strong>a purchas<strong>in</strong>g role you are <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> electronicpurchas<strong>in</strong>g, rais<strong>in</strong>g purchase <strong>or</strong>ders, process<strong>in</strong>gclaims <strong>or</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g funds control ledgers,supply databases <strong>an</strong>d accounts. (QE), (AR).TRAINING: After recruit tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, you’ll undergo aSupply Initial Employment Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Course <strong>to</strong> teachyou ma<strong>in</strong>ten<strong>an</strong>ce of <strong>in</strong>ven<strong>to</strong>ry rec<strong>or</strong>ds; identification<strong>an</strong>d catalogu<strong>in</strong>g of equipment; s<strong>to</strong>rage, receipt,despatch <strong>an</strong>d packag<strong>in</strong>g of goods; computeriseds<strong>to</strong>ck control; procurement competencies; <strong>an</strong>d therole of supply with<strong>in</strong> the Air F<strong>or</strong>ce.COOKThe Air F<strong>or</strong>ce is a great place <strong>to</strong> learn your tradeas a Cook. You’ll be <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> all aspects offood production <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g preparation, cookery,presentation, <strong>an</strong>d serv<strong>in</strong>g of the f<strong>in</strong>ished product.What’s m<strong>or</strong>e, you’ll also get <strong>to</strong> apply your skills <strong>to</strong><strong>in</strong>-flight kitchens, field cookery <strong>an</strong>d <strong>in</strong>structionalposts. (GE/QE), (AR).TRAINING: After recruit tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, you’ll undergo<strong>an</strong> ADF Initial Cooks Course where you’ll be givenboth practical <strong>an</strong>d the<strong>or</strong>etical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> all aspectsof cookery <strong>an</strong>d kitchen activities. The ChisholmInstitute of TAFE <strong>in</strong> partnership with ADF School ofCater<strong>in</strong>g provides your tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. Upon completion ofyour course, you are awarded civili<strong>an</strong> accreditation;a Certificate II <strong>in</strong> Hospitality (Kitchen Operations).MOVEMENTSA Movements career will see you responsible f<strong>or</strong>provid<strong>in</strong>g airfield services <strong>to</strong> supp<strong>or</strong>t Air F<strong>or</strong>ceactivities, operations <strong>an</strong>d exercises. You’ll be<strong>in</strong>volved with a wide r<strong>an</strong>ge of duties that <strong>in</strong>cludesboth air movements <strong>an</strong>d road movements. Airmovements <strong>in</strong>volves the load<strong>in</strong>g, unload<strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>drefuell<strong>in</strong>g of aircraft; air term<strong>in</strong>al operations which<strong>in</strong>volves the movement of passengers <strong>an</strong>d cargoon Air F<strong>or</strong>ce <strong>or</strong> visit<strong>in</strong>g aircraft; <strong>an</strong>d the operationof a wide r<strong>an</strong>ge of vehicles <strong>to</strong> supp<strong>or</strong>t theseactivities. Road movements <strong>in</strong>volve activities suchas vehicle despatch, vehicle fleet m<strong>an</strong>agement <strong>an</strong>dvehicle accident m<strong>an</strong>agement. (GE), (AR).TRAINING: After recruit tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, you’ll undergoa Movements Initial Employment Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Coursewhich is conducted <strong>in</strong> two phases. Phase onerequires you <strong>to</strong> ga<strong>in</strong> various vehicle driv<strong>in</strong>g licences<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>four</strong>-wheel drive, truck, bus <strong>an</strong>d f<strong>or</strong>klifttra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. Phase two tra<strong>in</strong>s you <strong>in</strong> the basic airmovements functionality <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g d<strong>an</strong>gerous goods<strong>an</strong>d explosive <strong>or</strong>dn<strong>an</strong>ce h<strong>an</strong>dl<strong>in</strong>g.5

On board, you’llbe w<strong>or</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g with some of the most sophisticatedelectronics surveill<strong>an</strong>ce equipment <strong>in</strong> the w<strong>or</strong>ld<strong>to</strong> ensure the success of your mission <strong>an</strong>d thesafety of the crew. (GE).TRAINING: After recruit tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, you’ll undergoa Combat Survival Course. You will also completethe Aviation Medic<strong>in</strong>e Initial Course <strong>to</strong> learn abouthum<strong>an</strong> physiology <strong>in</strong> the aviation environment.Follow<strong>in</strong>g that, you’ll do your AEA Specialist Coursebef<strong>or</strong>e jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong> operational squadron. Your firstr<strong>an</strong>k f<strong>or</strong> this job after tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is Serge<strong>an</strong>t.As a Crew Attend<strong>an</strong>t you’ll be responsible f<strong>or</strong> theload<strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>d unload<strong>in</strong>g of passengers, crew <strong>an</strong>dcargo on Air F<strong>or</strong>ce VIP jets. The Crew Attend<strong>an</strong>t Basic Course teachesstudents w<strong>in</strong>e education, groom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>d dep<strong>or</strong>tment,A Dental Assist<strong>an</strong>t <strong>in</strong> the Air F<strong>or</strong>ce is verysimilar <strong>to</strong> one outside of the <strong>Defence</strong> F<strong>or</strong>ce.You’ll be responsible f<strong>or</strong> chair-side assist<strong>an</strong>ce<strong>to</strong> the Dental Officer <strong>in</strong> addition <strong>to</strong> patientm<strong>an</strong>agement. You’ll assist <strong>in</strong> the treatmen<strong>to</strong>f patients, sterilis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>struments, preparationof dental materials, <strong>an</strong>d the process<strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>dmount<strong>in</strong>g of dental radiographs. You then completea dental log book <strong>to</strong> atta<strong>in</strong> civil registration.As a Lab<strong>or</strong>a<strong>to</strong>ry Technici<strong>an</strong> your role is <strong>to</strong>test hum<strong>an</strong> biological material <strong>to</strong> aid medicalpractitioners <strong>in</strong> the diagnosis, moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>dprevention of disease. You’ll be employed <strong>in</strong>Air F<strong>or</strong>ce hospitals <strong>an</strong>d Unit Health facilities<strong>to</strong> assist with nurs<strong>in</strong>g care <strong>to</strong> members of theAustrali<strong>an</strong> <strong>Defence</strong> F<strong>or</strong>ce. You may also f<strong>in</strong>dyourself assist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> aeromedical evacuations<strong>an</strong>d w<strong>or</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g as part of operational deploymentsoverseas. (GE/QE).TRAINING: After recruit tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, you’ll undergoa Basic Medical Assist<strong>an</strong>t Course <strong>to</strong> teach you basicnurs<strong>in</strong>g skills, first aid, <strong>an</strong>a<strong>to</strong>my <strong>an</strong>d physiology,<strong>an</strong>d <strong>how</strong> <strong>to</strong> w<strong>or</strong>k under the supervision of ADFNurs<strong>in</strong>g Officers. Follow<strong>in</strong>g the successfulcompletion of the course, you’ll complete <strong>an</strong> AirF<strong>or</strong>ce Medical Assist<strong>an</strong>t Ambul<strong>an</strong>ce Course <strong>to</strong> giveThe safety <strong>an</strong>d survival of aircrew colleagues is ofparamount imp<strong>or</strong>t<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>to</strong> <strong>an</strong> Aircraft Life Supp<strong>or</strong>tFitter. You’ll be responsible f<strong>or</strong> provid<strong>in</strong>g serviceableaircraft, aircrew safety <strong>an</strong>d survival equipment <strong>to</strong>meet operational requirements. This could be <strong>an</strong>yth<strong>in</strong>gfrom helmets <strong>an</strong>d oxygen masks <strong>to</strong> parachutes <strong>an</strong>dlife rafts, as well as survival kits, the test<strong>in</strong>g ofemergency loca<strong>to</strong>r beacons, <strong>an</strong>d the updat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>dma<strong>in</strong>ten<strong>an</strong>ce of technical rec<strong>or</strong>ds. They also guar<strong>an</strong>tee you ajob on completion of your specialist tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.ON-GOING TRAININGThe Air F<strong>or</strong>ce w<strong>an</strong>ts <strong>to</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g out the very best<strong>in</strong> you. FRIENDSGiven that so much of Air F<strong>or</strong>ce life is basedupon w<strong>or</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g closely <strong>in</strong> a team, from themoment you jo<strong>in</strong> the Air F<strong>or</strong>ce you’ll f<strong>in</strong>d you’llbe mak<strong>in</strong>g a lot of new friends. That will <strong>become</strong>even m<strong>or</strong>e apparent when you’re posted <strong>to</strong> abase where you’ll probably socialise with yourw<strong>or</strong>k friends just like you would with <strong>an</strong>y job.However, given that your w<strong>or</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g hours aresimilar <strong>to</strong> those <strong>an</strong>ywhere else, you c<strong>an</strong> still catchup with your friends outside the Air F<strong>or</strong>ce as well.DISCIPLINEJust like <strong>an</strong>y n<strong>or</strong>mal job, the Air F<strong>or</strong>ce has certa<strong>in</strong>discipl<strong>in</strong>ary st<strong>an</strong>dards that need <strong>to</strong> be ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed,especially where people’s lives are on the l<strong>in</strong>e.So while you’ll need <strong>to</strong> be able <strong>to</strong> give <strong>an</strong>d take<strong>or</strong>ders throughout your career <strong>in</strong> the Air F<strong>or</strong>ce,you’ll f<strong>in</strong>d discipl<strong>in</strong>e is based on reason <strong>an</strong>dco-operation between everyone, <strong>to</strong> ensureevery <strong>in</strong>dividual is treated with respect.16


BENEFITSACCOMMODATIONThere are basically two types of accommodation<strong>in</strong> the Air F<strong>or</strong>ce: on-base <strong>an</strong>d off-base. On-base,you’ll f<strong>in</strong>d comf<strong>or</strong>table liv<strong>in</strong>g quarters that aresubsidised by the Air F<strong>or</strong>ce. If not required <strong>to</strong> liveon base, you c<strong>an</strong> either buy your own home <strong>or</strong> live<strong>in</strong> subsidised accommodation (subject <strong>to</strong> maritalstatus <strong>an</strong>d availability). If you’re s<strong>in</strong>gle, you mayalso be eligible <strong>to</strong> receive rental assist<strong>an</strong>ce fromthe Air F<strong>or</strong>ce.PAYYour salary is made up of your basic salary plusa Service Allow<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>an</strong>d a Unif<strong>or</strong>m Ma<strong>in</strong>ten<strong>an</strong>ceAllow<strong>an</strong>ce. It’s paid directly <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> your b<strong>an</strong>k, creditunion <strong>or</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g society account, <strong>an</strong>d tax <strong>an</strong>dsuper<strong>an</strong>nuation are au<strong>to</strong>matically deducted.How much you are paid obviously depends uponyour r<strong>an</strong>k, length of service <strong>an</strong>d your chosencareer. However, you will f<strong>in</strong>d your pay is verycompetitive when compared <strong>to</strong> salaries paid <strong>in</strong>similar fields outside the Air F<strong>or</strong>ce. Our CareersCounsell<strong>or</strong>s will be able <strong>to</strong> provide you with allsalary details.SUPERANNUATIONJust like a civili<strong>an</strong> employer, the Air F<strong>or</strong>ce hasits own compuls<strong>or</strong>y super<strong>an</strong>nuation scheme.This covers you f<strong>or</strong> your super, as well as <strong>in</strong>validity<strong>an</strong>d death benefits. And there’s a sense of pride because ofthe unif<strong>or</strong>m <strong>an</strong>d because you’re w<strong>or</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>or</strong> theAustrali<strong>an</strong> people.What is a Communication ElectronicTechnici<strong>an</strong>?Communication Electronic Technici<strong>an</strong>s providesupp<strong>or</strong>t f<strong>or</strong> the aircrews <strong>an</strong>d the ground crews.We’re a ground based supp<strong>or</strong>t group. I w<strong>or</strong>k withradios <strong>an</strong>d communications equipment, radars,computers <strong>an</strong>d netw<strong>or</strong>ks.What do you do <strong>in</strong> the way of electronics?If <strong>an</strong>y of the equipment fails, <strong>an</strong>y part of theequipment at all, we fix it. In the civili<strong>an</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ld they tend <strong>to</strong> w<strong>or</strong>k onone piece of equipment rather th<strong>an</strong> the entiresystem. We w<strong>or</strong>k on everyth<strong>in</strong>g from the Opera<strong>to</strong>rDisplay Units <strong>to</strong> the radar – one end of thespectrum <strong>to</strong> the other. And we get a Certificate III<strong>in</strong> Electrical Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g that’s directly accreditedoutside <strong>in</strong> the civili<strong>an</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ld.What’s the best th<strong>in</strong>g about your job <strong>in</strong> theAir F<strong>or</strong>ce?Diversity. You get <strong>to</strong> w<strong>or</strong>k on a lot of systems.You go on operations. You get <strong>to</strong> see differentparts of Australia f<strong>or</strong> a couple of weeks at a time.You’ve got job security, whereas <strong>in</strong> the civili<strong>an</strong>w<strong>or</strong>ld it’s very unstable. You get a good wage,it’s comparable <strong>to</strong> the outside w<strong>or</strong>ld, <strong>an</strong>d there’sa lot of good friendships as well.Is be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Air F<strong>or</strong>ce just a job, <strong>or</strong> is ita way of life?It is a way of life, but it’s not your entire life.You’ve got your friends <strong>an</strong>d family, <strong>an</strong>d youc<strong>an</strong> go <strong>an</strong>d visit them pretty much wheneveryou’re off duty.Where do you see your future head<strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>dwill you stay with the Air F<strong>or</strong>ce?I’m currently <strong>in</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, so I’ll be <strong>in</strong> f<strong>or</strong> <strong>an</strong>other<strong>four</strong> years <strong>to</strong> complete my <strong>in</strong>itial period of service.But I’ll probably stay with the Air F<strong>or</strong>ce f<strong>or</strong> quite <strong>an</strong>umber of years after that because of the security<strong>an</strong>d because it’s <strong>an</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g job. My mates aregreat here <strong>an</strong>d the Air F<strong>or</strong>ce provides everyth<strong>in</strong>gI w<strong>an</strong>t. It makes it a really, a really good job.Would you recommend your job <strong>to</strong> <strong>an</strong>yonew<strong>an</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> jo<strong>in</strong> the Air F<strong>or</strong>ce?I’d recommend it <strong>to</strong> <strong>an</strong>yone <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> electronics <strong>an</strong>dcomputers.
