20 Chemistry and Chemical Engineering MSc in Pharmaceutical Technology Semesters: 4 Study credits: 120 ECTS Start: September 2007 Seats: 60 Application date: March 15 or June 1, 2007 There is an ever increasing need for better pharmaceuticals for treatment of human diseases. It is of paramount importance to have drugs that are both efficient, selective and without side effects. Medicinal chemistry and organic synthesis are core disciplines within this development process. The MSc in Pharmaceutical Technology assures competences in these areas and brings with it the opportunity to work with drug design and development. Studying Pharmaceutical Technology will give you an appreciation of the multi-disciplinary field of drug discovery and production. You will learn about the process of producing a pharmaceutical from the initial idea to the final drug used in the treatment of a disease. A key part of the drug discovery pipeline is the synthetic preparation of hit and lead compounds. Designing and executing a short and efficient synthetic route to a desired chemical substance is vital to a drug development program. This requires an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical organic chemistry, which is an important part of the MSc program. You will also gain experience in analyzing the products of your synthetic work using state-of-the-art analytical equipment and techniques. Furthermore, you can experience the important field of molecular modeling during your studies. You will have the opportunity to use your knowledge in research and development projects rel- evant to drug development and production. Some projects will be carried out in close collaboration with industrial partners from pharmaceutical companies, offering an opportunity to experience working in the pharmaceutical industry. Career opportunities: Medicinal Chemistry, Process Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Production, Intellectual Property Management, Consulting, and Organic Chemical Research and Development. Prerequisites: BSc degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or equivalent. Students with BSc degree in biotechnology may apply, provided they have prerequisites in theoretical and practical organic chemistry as well as spectroscopy (as described in DTU courses 26411, 26405/26407 and 26428). Proficiencies in the following areas are expected: Theoretical and Practical Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Basic Biological Chemistry. Program coordinator: Assistant Professor Mads H.
