MSc in Civil Engineering
Semesters: 4
Study credits: 120 ECTS
Seats: 120
Application date: March 15 or June 1, 2007
Civil engineers are responsible for planning, construction and maintenance of most of our sur-
roundings. It takes a profound and versatile knowledge to master the disciplines involved including
mechanics, material science, energy technology, heat and mass transfer, hydraulics, acoustics, risk as-
sessment, computer modelling and simulation, 3D-visualization, communication and management.
Civil Engineering comprises planning, design, risk -assessment, erection and maintenance of build-
ings, services, construction work and towns. The subjects of the education varies from roads, rail-
ways, bridges and tunnels to houses and halls with load bearing structures and facades and services
for heating, lighting, acoustics and fire safety, water supply drain and sewers, channels, harbours
and off-shore structures and town plans.
Four specializations are offered:
Building Structures with design of structures for bridges, halls and houses, building design, fire
safety, acoustics, production and maintenance.
Building Services with total energy comsumption, building envelopes, heating, ventilation, aircondi-
tion, water and power supply, solar energy, draining and fire safety.
Soil and Water Mechanics with foundations, retaining walls, dams, roads, railways, airports, har-
bours, channels, tunnels, off-shore structures, sewers and energy plants.
Urban and Construction management with planning of projects, erection and maintenance, town
plans and the integrated function of a build environment.
A number of courses can be chosen for each specialization, so that the student may gain special
competences or attending recommended course sequences.
Specializations: Building Structures, Building Services, Soil and Water
Mechanics, Urban and Construction Management
Career opportunities: Consulting Engineers, Contractors, Component manufactures
Authorities, Insurance Engineers, Researchers.
Prerequisites: BSc degree in Civil Engineering with Basics of :
Physics and mathematics incl. differential equations
CAD and the Finite Element Method
Building materials, properties and micro structures
Building technology
Structural design in steel, concrete and wood
Building physics including heat and moisture transport
Planning and production of building projects
MSc in Environmental Engineering
Semesters: 4
Study credits: 120 ECTS
Seats: 60
Application date: March 15 or June 1, 2007
Several activities in an industrialized society lead to use of resources and pollution of our environment.
There is an utmost need to develop and establish technological plants which can ensure the
human health in the society by providing clean drinking water on a sustainable basis. Besides, there
is also demand of systems to manage the waste streams of the society and to reduce emissions to
the environment. Such environmental systems are sewage treatment plants, remediation systems
at contaminated sites or air pollution control units to avoid air pollution from waste incineration
plants. Environmental plants and systems should
be established with a basic understanding of the effect of emissions on the surroundings and the
needed reduction in emissions to obtain the necessary environmental benefit. Therefore courses
covering pollution of water, air and soil are an integrated part of the environmental engineering
program.
The program focuses also on water resource issues. Globally there is an increasing demand of water
for household, agriculture and industry. Thus there is a need for better methods to localize and
quantify available water resources. Besides, deterioration of the water resource by several pollutant
sources gives a need to evaluate the water quality.
Specialization into a more management oriented profile is also an option. Here the focus can be
on industrial environmental management or management issues specially related to developing
countries or society´s use of chemicals.
Study lines: Environmental Technology
Water Resources
Environmental Management
Career opportunities: Employed in consulting companies, industrial companies,
research institutions, universities and public authorities
(on a local, regional or state level).
Prerequisites: BSc degree in environmental-, chemical- or
civil engineering or other relevant academic
background. Skills within at least one of the
following subjects: Geology, Hydraulics, Statistics,
Ecology, Hydrology, Management
