Biotechnology and Food Science
MSc in Biotechnology
Semesters: 4
Study credits: 120 ECTS
Start: September 2007
Seats: 60
Application date: March 15 or June 1, 2007
Today’s biotechnology is an exciting multidisciplinary science encompassing areas such as biology,
biochemistry, genetics, bioinformatics and engineering science. For centuries, biotechnology has
been used in the manufacturing of beer, wine, cheese and bread. In recent years, biotechnology has
been implemented in the pharmaceutical industry: Penicillin is used in the treatment of infections
and insulin is given to patients suffering from diabetes. Moreover, biotechnology has gained and
will continue to gain increasing importance in other areas for instance bioethanol used as fuel,
enzymes used in washing powder, and starting compounds for bio-degradable plastic materials. Bio-
technology plays a crucial role in the discovery and development of new pharmaceutical compounds
and in the food industry. Bioinformatics, which is based on the latest computer technology in the
analysis of biological information, plays a central role in the development of new pharmaceutical
products by exploiting the information obtained during the mapping of the human genome. In the
environmental area, biotechnology is an important player in connection with the handling of waste
from both industrial and agricultural production, and from degradation of toxic compounds spread
to the environment. In the future, biotechnological procedures will replace many classical processes
in chemical synthesis, as well as lead to completely new compounds in processes, which will be less
harsh towards the environment.
Following the general program in Biotechnology gives you the possibility to define your own bio-
technological profile from a broad variety of courses within molecular biology, molecular ecology,
environmental microbiology, mycology, protein chemistry, lipid chemistry, bioinformatics, process
biotechnology and food biotechnology. A degree in biotechnology provides an opportunity to work
in and influence the future development within this exciting field.
Career opportunities: Challenging jobs in research, development, innovation or
management of biotechnology both at universities and in
industry.
Prerequisites: BSc degree in biotechnology, chemical engineering,
biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology or other
relevant academic background. Skills within biochemistry,
microbiology or molecular biology are required.
MSc in Food Science and Technology
Semesters: 4
Study credits: 120 ECTS
Start: September 2007
Seats: 60
Application date: March 15 or June 1, 2007
Food and health play a central role in many aspects of human society. The modern food industry
is based on sound science and involves many new and advanced technological strategies. Resent
advances in biological sciences allow for new and complex technologies for the production and
handling of food. This development has created an increased demand for highly educated food
scientists and food technologists.
This MSc program will educate candidates to be the future key players in meeting the consumers’
demand for nutritious, safe, attractive, wholesome and sustainable food. You will be able to understand,
develop, and evaluate modern technological strategies for food and food ingredient production.
This MSc program is based on an introductory, multidisciplinary training in the fundamental
biosciences of biochemistry, molecular biology, enzyme technology and microbiology.
The Food Science and Technology general MSc program allows you to define you own Food Science
and Technology profile from a broad variety of courses to specialize in bioinformatics, nutrigenomics,
biotechnology, food production, management, etc. Or you may chose to follow the more
proposed study plan leading to a combination of more general competencies.
Career opportunities: You will qualify for a broad range of challenging jobs in
research and development at governmental institutions,
universities and in the industry.
Prerequisites: BSc degree in Food Science or other relevant academic
background. Skills within chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology,
mathematics and statistics are required.
