FR. JOHN-OKORIA IBHAKEWANLAN SJTRAINING STUDENTS TO BE LEADERSI look forward to the day when LJC graduates will return here as leaders of our country. Recently, aJesuit alumnus, the mayor of Philadelphia, visited his alma mater St. Joe's Prep, which he said is"the place that made me who I am." Mr. Michael Nutter wanted one of his first official appearancesas mayor to be at his former Jesuit school. St. Joseph's Preparatory School obliged him, being theschool's first graduate to become Philadelphia mayor. A jubilant audience of about 1,200 students, teachers, alumni and parents welcomed him. He gave credit to numerous people at the Jesuitschool and reiterated his call to service. As Nutter entered the hall, according to the Rev. William Byron, president of the North PhiladelphiaJesuit school for boys, there was a deafening applause: "Everyone is thrilled to say 'Welcome home.'" Nutter said a parochial schoolteacher had nudged him into choosing St. Joe's over military school. He got into the Jesuit school on an academic scholarship and graduated in 1975. According tohim, "This is still the best high school in the United States of America," Nutter told the crowd, whichboomed approval. He handed the students and his young listeners an assignment: "I need you to be ambassadors ofhope and opportunity.” Reminding them why the assignment was mandatory, he said, "You're at aJesuit institution. I think it should be clear to you what your mission is. You're being trained righthere to be leaders of your community." In crediting St. Joe's with setting him on a successful path,he sought applause for all in the school community, both teachers and support staff. "It's not justthe folks you see in the classroom," he said. "You can learn something from anyone." He recognizedhis class as "the best class that ever graduated from here."One of his teachers, Jerry Taylor, a history teacher at the school for 39 years and who maintained afriendship with the mayor, gave his own summary description of him: "He's mentally strong!" Nuttermade it clear he was just rolling up his sleeves. "I came from the same place you're from," he toldthe students. "And I'm not done yet. Oh, we're just getting started!" (culled from Lea Sitton Stanley,Inquirer Staff Writer)Indeed, I look forward to witnessing a true Loyolan, who (having imbibed the values of love, a faiththat does justice in service of God and others) will reach the magis and commit himself/herself tothe underprivileged of Nigeria; a Loyolan whose contribution will make Nigeria a nation to bereckoned with and a model of one that cares for her citizens.

There goes half your life.”Shortly afterwards a squall came and shipwreck was imminent. Then the boatman said to the philosopher: “Youmean to tell me you don’t know how to swim?
