Big John Carter
Has rapidly become a firm favourite at the UK Boogie Woogie
Festival. His larger than life persona fits well with the legendary
performers who used the same prefix!
Big John hails from London and he makes the journey here to
Dorset each month to support the UK Boogie Woogie Club.
His attendance has ensured the club has gone from strength to
strength in showcasing this wonderful music.
Since attending his first festival,
Big John has travelled more
widely in Europe so that other
fans of boogie woogie can
experience his dynamic playing.
Last year, Big John was invited
by Axel Zwingenberger and
Vince Weber to perform at their
Boogie Woogie Connection at
the Fabrik in Hamburg.
Always down to earth, Big John
is very knowledgeable about the
music he loves to listen to and
perform. Together with
James Goodwin, Big John
will deliver the History of
Boogie Woogie feature at this
year’s festival.
James Goodwin
Has been playing professionally for over twenty years in the UK,
Belgium and Holland and we are indeed fortunate to have him
returning to this year’s festival.
His collaboration with Big John Carter, to explain the History
of Boogie Woogie by performing the music, is an event you
should not miss.
James is an accomplished player with an extensive knowledge of
the blues and boogie woogie. He is particularly interested in the
older styles of barrelhouse blues piano (in the age before the term
‘boogie woogie’ was coined!) developed in the railroad camps
and whorehouses
of East
Texas.
James’ CD,
“Blue Eyed
Devil” features
his original
compositions
and is a true
acoustic solo
performance
without props!
A new album
will be available
soon.
When James
sits down to
play, you know
he is feeling
the music and
this devotion
projects
itself to his
audience.
Howard Meyrick
Was first inspired by the “big tall
clarinettist bloke” from Kenny Ball’s
Jazzmen in the ‘70’s! He started playing
clarinet at the age of 9 and later, the sax
at age 20. Although he’s been playing for
many years he only started playing
in bands seriously about 12 years ago
when Julian Phillips invited him to play
with ‘The Stuff’.
As part of the house band for the Boogie
Woogie Festival Howard has provided
great accompaniments and solos on the tenor sax since the
festival began in 2005. He has also since been a mainstay of our
monthly Boogie Woogie Club.
Howard also plays with the “Average Wage Band” a 9-piece
funk/blues/reggae/soul band, and the 50’s style Rock ‘n’ Roll
band “Shoe Suede Blues”.
Howard’s musical inspiration comes from many directions but
particular favourites include Ray Charles, Louis Jordan and the
Fats Domino Band.
Frank
Muschalle
Makes a welcome
return to this
year’s UK Boogie
Woogie Festival,
having appeared
in the first festival
at Fontmell Magna
in 2005.
Frank is an
original, gifted
musician who is
rightly admired by
his fellow players.
He has toured
extensively in
Europe, America
and even Paraguay and Bolivia!
Frank was born in 1969 and spent many years studying classical
piano before discovering the magic of boogie woogie. His primary
musical influences include the boogie woogie trio of Ammons,
Lewis and Johnson, together with Little Brother Montgomery,
Cow Cow Davenport and his great friend, Axel Zwingenberger.
The list of other artists who have influenced him is impressive,
as are the collaborations he has made with boogie woogie
players such as Axel, Louisiana Red, Jimmy McCracklin and
Red Holloway.
In 1995, the excellent CD, “Great Boogie Woogie News” was
released, featuring Frank and three of his contemporaries. More
recently, Frank’s superb technique can be found on several CD’s
and the title of his latest recording would seem to be the perfect
description of the man himself - “Fine Blend”!
Chris Corcoran
Is one of the most sought after guitarists on the UK blues and
music scene. He has played with many great performers, notably
West Weston, Si Cranstoun, Big John Carter and Jackson Sloan
(with Ray Gelato). He now runs the Chris Corcoran Trio, which
released its debut
CD, The Getaway in
2011. Recorded in
one session, with a few
additional overdubs, the
CD has a unique vibe
and style.
The Chris Corcoran Trio
play an exciting and
eclectic mix of instrumental
music covering
Blues, Jazz, Latin, Funk
and Rock’n’Roll styles.
They play regular live
shows and appeared at
the International Guitar
Festival of Great Britain
in 2011.
2012 is another busy
year and sees Chris
returning to the UK
Boogie Woogie Festival
in July, with Jamie Lawrence on upright bass and Rob Pokorny on
drums, providing the house band for the Saturday Concert.
Hamp Goes Wild
Hamp “Went Wild” when he heard his first
Elvis Presley record at the age of ten!
His love of Rock and Roll music became inspired
by his hero, Jerry Lee Lewis, modelling
himself on the “Killer” to such an extent that
he won second prize in a Swiss look-alike
competition in 1988!
In July 1992, Jerry Lee was due to play a
concert in Wettingen Switzerland but became
ill and was unable to play. Hamp spoke with
Jerry Lee’s manager and was thrilled to be
able to perform three numbers with the band,
who included Kenny Lovelace and
James Burton. Hamp is still on the lookout for
any photographs of this memorable night!
Since then, Hamp’s influences have
widened and his repertoire has
extended to include other forms of
piano styles but, rest assured,
the piano will still be pumping!
His performances have included
many television appearances and
concerts. Between 1999 and 2001, Hamp made guest
appearances as Jerry Lee Lewis in the musical
“Buddy” in Hamburg. He has appeared with Linda
Gail Lewis at a concert in a country music festival in
Albisguetli, Switzerland.
Look out for Hamp’s latest CD, “Roomin’ House
Boogie”, recorded with vintage sound equipment for
the authentic sound of his beloved 50’s.
lluis Coloma
Was born in Barcelona in 1973 and continues to be in great
demand in his own country, throughout Europe and beyond.
His early influences include Jerry Lee Lewis, Roosevelt Sykes and
Alan Price, although his many and varied collaborations with
other musicians continue to develop his unique and varied style.
He has duetted with some of the great names of Boogie Woogie,
including Carl Sonny Leyland, Mitch Woods and Frank Muschalle.
In recent years, Lluís has performed in many countries all over
the world including Malaysia, Spain, Belgium, Serbia, France,
Germany, Switzerland and many more. Lluís’ discography continues
to display his powerful and original playing and since 2002,
he has released 7 CD’s, the latest of which is “International
Boogie Woogie Explosion” where he teams with the great
Boogie Woogie legend Bob Seeley, showcasing their talents
with a live recording at Café Central in Madrid. The majority of
Lluís’ songs highlight that he is also a talented composer of
Blues and Boogie Woogie.
Lluís is sure to be a big hit at this year’s festival – make sure you
see him!
Julian Phillips
Began playing piano at the age of ten
but he was fourteen when he became
aware of boogie woogie. Julian began
to teach himself how to play this wonderful
music, influenced by players such
as Jimmy Yancey, Clarence “Pinetop”
Smith, Montana Taylor and
Cripple Clarence Lofton.
Listen to Julian sing and you can hear
the influence of Big Bill Broonzy and
Louis Jordan.
Julian is the pulse of the UK Boogie Woogie Festival. As one of
the founders of the festival, it is fitting that he appears on the bill
to perform a solo set at this year’s event.
His love and knowledge of the music is infectious and whether
playing solo or performing with other musicians his enjoyment of
the music shines through.
Julian has played in concerts and festivals in Europe and America
and he is highly esteemed by his fellow players.
As a teacher, Julian has inspired many young people to follow his
example and many of them will be playing during the festival, a
tribute to his talent, enthusiasm and love of boogie woogie.
Chris Davidson
Our UK Boogie Woogie Festival
just wouldn’t be the same without
Chris Davidson and his “Boogie Box”!
Chris is one of our resident musicians and
has been ever present since 2005. He is
also a stalwart of the monthly Boogie
Woogie Club in Sturminster Newton.
Whether he is providing the background
bass line for individual pianists or playing
with the festival backing band, Chris
provides that unique sound and expression,
perfect for the boogie beat.
Chris first played his one-string, handmade
box bass during the skiffle era of the 1950’s. In addition to
his skills on the Boogie Box, Chris can also play the harmonica,
spoons and washboard. In the early 1990’s, Chris first teamed
up with Julian Phillips, beginning an enduring partnership that
has seen the duo performing in many venues in the UK, Europe
and America. The famous Boogie Box is a surprisingly versatile
instrument as it can also double as a very large suitcase when
Chris is on his travels!
