The project is a cooperation with Chalmers Building Services Engineering in orderto create an interdisciplinary environment of researchers in building serviceengineering and electro-technology. The overall goal is to provide an assessmentof the savings potential as well as to provide recommendations regarding theprofitability of new solutions. Moreover, the project aims to model different motor drive technologies with focuson efficiency determination and analyze the possibilities of improving the efficiencyby means of new motor technology and control. An important issue is also toprovide an overview of the requirements on the electrical environment and assessthe advantages and drawbacks of different types of power electronic controlsystems for the electric motors.During 2009 the focus was placed on the modelling of permanent magnet motors.Different FEM programs for modelling motor losses have been evaluated andsuitable software was chosen that fulfils all the requirements. FEM models of aninverter fed induction motor and an inverter fed BLDC motor have beendeveloped, and it takes into account the effects of a switched voltage supply.Furthermore, a laboratory setup with a BLDC drive system was built and tested inorder to verify the simulation results.Research programsThe research activities at the Division are typically part of larger researchprograms at Chalmers or within national or international research collaborations. The following section gives a summary presentation of the main researchprograms in which the Division is actively involved.E.ON and Chalmers education and research partnershipThe agreement between the E.ON Energy Company and Chalmers relating to aresearch and education partnership was signed in May 2008. During a period often years Chalmers and EON will work together to strengthen and developresearch and education within the field of energy. The aim is to further developknowledge and techniques for safe and environmentally sustainable energysupply, transmission and use. The collaboration also aims at educating competentengineers to meet future demands of the energy industry. The process of identifying research projects for the collaboration has resulted infour themes containing suitable Chalmers research projects. The themes are: A.Future Energy Systems, B. Efficient use of Biomass, C. Nuclear Reactor Safetyand D. Technology Assessment from a Sustainability and Risk Perspective.During 2009 the research program was defined and activities have been focusedon recruiting new staff members and preparing/planning for 2010. The Divisionlead the project: A.2 Future Electric Power System – Smart Grid (with projectleader Lina Bertling).37 |
