Program Outline and VisionElectric Power Engineering is a technical fieldundergoing significant development. The newly createdchair in Sustainable Electric Power Systems, which I hadthe privilege of taking on in January 2009, is anillustration of the importance of the movement of thepower system toward renewable solutions.Current evolution of the electric power system is theresult of several contemporary events and developments. For example, the need for reinforcement of thepower system, especially the grids; the development ofmore integrated energy markets in Europe; moreintermittent power production; a mixture of large andsmall scale production; changes among the systemactors including the roles of both consumers and producers; and introduction of electricity inthe transport sector. One expression of these developments is captured in the words andthe concept: Smart Grid. Over the course of the year I have participated in numerousinterviews and presentations that communicate about and explain the idea. In short, SmartGrid is the assemblage of solutions building towards a sustainable electric power system. This suggests a system supplied by a large share of renewable energy sources, and onewith an intelligent infrastructure for electricity delivery, i.e., incorporating new features forcontrol communication and energy storage including the possibility for connection ofelectrical vehicles. I believe the overall target should be to find cost-efficient solutions forend users, added value for all actors, and to support the goal of sustainable energysystems involving an increased level of renewable energy sources both for electricitygeneration and in the transportation sector. The Division of Electric Power Engineering performs research and offers education in themain areas of this development. Particular focus is placed on wind power generation and itsconnection to the grid, power delivery systems incorporating a market and consumer perspective, energy storage, and electrical vehicles involving connection to the grid.My hope and vision in leading the Division is that it shall produce international excellence inresearch and education within our focus areas. Excellence is the result of hard anddedicated work, and I am confident that we can achieve this together in a joyful and stimulatingwork environment. Research is always based on team-work, and my wish is thateveryone in the Division, our supporting staff from the Department, our steering and referencegroups and Elkraftrådet, will feel that they are an important part of our joint vision! Thanks for the great contributions during the past year and I look forward to an excitingyear to come, with many new challenges and possibilities!Yours,Lina BertlingGothenburgApril, 20103 |
