Wind power and network integrationWind power and network integration is a main research topic at the Division.Modelling and control of wind turbines are topics that have attracted a great dealof attention. Following on the results of this focus, the research has continued withexploration into fault response from wind turbines as well as study of what windturbines could do during network disturbances to reinforce the grid. Lately theactivities regarding propagation of HF-transients in wind parks as well as reliabilityissues have attracted more attention, and currently a couple of projects examinethis issue. During 2009 the research scope has been extended to include reliabilitymodelling and maintenance management.General activitiesThe Division takes part in several related educational and research programs onwind power. The main activities are summarized below. Ola Carlson is the projectleader at Chalmers for these different programs.Power ClusterThe Power Cluster partnership aims to tackle crucial challenges to the further rolloutof offshore wind technology in Northern Europe by cooperating beyondborderlines and sector barriers. Furthermore, the Power Cluster project seeks todevelop cooperation between individual countries in order to take advantage offuture growth in offshore wind and identify future markets.The overall project goal is implementation of a transnational offshore wind energycluster in the North Sea Region. In that respect, the Power Cluster project willcontribute to ensuring the North Sea Region‟s continued leadership in offshorewind energy.This work will allow Power Cluster to develop comprehensive approaches to meetthe strategic challenges of offshore wind energy industry in the North Sea Regionand make the region a better place to live, work and invest in.Swedish Technical Wind CentreThe centre is a collaboration between Chalmers and the Swedish industry andwas initiated due to the lack of large-scale production of wind turbines in Sweden.Chalmers and the industrial partners have been working intensely since March2009 to formulate the research focus and organisational form of this researchcentre. The centre will concentrate on wind turbines with an output of more than 2MW, suitable for positioning in open countryside, forests, mountains or off-shore,and the work will be organized within the following themes:1. Electric power and control2. Aerodynamic forces and turbine blade design3. Mechanical drive train and system optimization4. Supporting structure and foundation25 |
