The Science FestivalThe Division is involved in the yearly Science Festival, which is arranged eachspring by the City of Gothenburg. During one week, a number of activities for thepublic are arranged at different locations in the city. One contribution from theDivision was the open house at the Wind Turbine Station at Hönö. The public wasinvited to the station where they met scientists to discuss and ask about windpower.Another commitment was the stall “Wind Power is a Breeze”, where students wereable to construct their own turbines for a miniature wind power station and therebylearn about wind power. There were two turbines, a smaller one intended foryounger children and a larger one intended for older ones. The small one wasconnected to a little model house with a light bulb and the larger one to threelamps connected in parallel plus a voltmeter, ammeter and oscilloscope. Theturbines were powered by the strong wind from a large fan. The stall was appreciatedby the visitors, young students and researchers alike. It is one of abouttwenty different stalls in the big experimental workshop, and the experimentalworkshops welcomed over 10 000 visitors for a period of two weeks. During theweeks, students aged 8-15 visited the workshops and the public joined during theweekends.Magnus Ellsén is the coordination for Divisions activities within the ScienceFestival.GymnasiumcenterEvery year high school students from Porthälla Gymnasium come to Chalmers toconduct a wind power experiment. They also make a study visit to the Chalmersturbines on Hönö. This cooperation has enabled teachers to expand the windpower knowledge of their students. Their physics course contains project workintended to be carried out in the wind power area. To make this possible theyneed to have access to suitable learning equipment and facilities.A master thesis project that involved the production of course material for futurewind energy courses was conducted in autumn 2009. This led to several meetingswith teachers that resulted in discussions about requests for material, thesignificance of the project and background knowledge of the pupils. Thiscooperation has led to a basic wind compendium especially designed for highschool students and based on their level of background knowledge.ELKRAFTDAGEN and ELKRAFTRÅDETELKRAFTDAGEN is a yearly event arranged by the Division of ElectricalEngineering, the Division of High Voltage Engineering and ELKRAFTRÅDET. Theaim of the day is to encourage students to apply to the program in electricalengineering, and to provide a forum for industry, researchers and students withinterest in the field of electrical engineering.14 |
