News & EventsLETTER FROM MEMBERS OF THE PUBLICThe following was received from two members of the public and we would like to assist them with locang the Youth Members involvedto pass on their thanks.“Dear Scouts and Guides,We are wring to express our sincere thanks to a group of Scouts and Guides who were hiking along the Great Walk in the Sunshine CoastHinterland in the Kondalilla area on the morning of Friday 1 July, between Montville and the Kondalilla picnic grounds.We had decided to do the Kondalilla Falls circuit (about 4.7km, grade 4 walk), this would have been quite challenging enough for us(although we did complete a 6km, grade 3 walk just a few days earlier), but there was an added difficulty generated by the fact that partof the track was closed toward the end of the circuit. For various reasons this led us to take a wrong turn and end up on another trackaltogether, heading in the wrong direcon enrely.It was about half an hour aer this turn, and with some increasing anxiety, that we came upon a group of young people (who we laterdiscovered to be Scouts and Guides) trekking from the opposite direcon. They responded to our queries about locaon with poise andcourtesy, despite the rather strange sight we must have presented (two women in the middle of the rainforest asking, a bit pathecally,“where are we?”), and gave us direcons to return to the correct path, along with advice regarding connuing along the current track,and explained the distances with professionalism and kindness. Their knowledge of the terrain was impressive and it was clear that theywere well prepared and intent on their objecve of hiking the full track over the four days – but were sll willing to stop and assist, evenin the middle of the forest. We were also extremely impressed with their mature atude.To be honest we cannot imagine what would have happened if they had not come along and been so willing to assist us at that point – toconnue unl the end of the track we were on would probably have been impossible for us.If it is possible to trace which groups these inspiring and very impressive young people belong to we would like you to pass on our trulygrateful thanks – their help in this situaon is something we will not forget.”MCHAPPY DAY 2011McHappy Day 2011 is coming up on Saturday the 12th of November. This year is the second year that ScoutsQueensland has been involved with McHappy Day and we are planning to do our best to help make a valuedcontribuon to Ronald McDonald House Charies. Last Year Scouts Australia helped to raise a record $2.47 Millionthat assisted in the running and day to day operaons of Ronald McDonald houses all over Australia.This year Scouts Queensland is offering opportunies for Groups to become involved with your local McDonalds.If your Group is not located near a McDonalds we also encourage you to run some events with in your ownCrew to help fundraise for this worthy cause. Every person who parcipates also receives a McHappy Day Scout badge that can be sewnon the camp blanket or swapped. News & EventsINTERNATIONAL COMMISSIONERSCONFERENCE.On the weekend of Sept 10/11, Iand a team member travelled toCanberra to aend the Interna‐onal Commissioners Conference.The Indonesian Embassy in Canberraheld a recepon for ScoutsAustralia, aended by 28 representavesfrom almost all itsBranches in Australia on Friday 9 thSeptember 2011.Commissioners in charge of Internaonal from most Branchesaended a meeng in Canberra over the weekend, and ScoutsAustralia asked for a chance to visit the Embassy.The Indonesian Embassy sawthis as a good opportunity toshow their countries apprecia‐on for the cooperaon andsupport given from Scout’sAustralia thus far.The evening started with thedelegaon vising the IndonesianCultural Centre, where wewere introduced to the gamelan,which is the full musical instrument set of Indonesia.The evening then progressed with an authenc Indonesian dinner,presentaons on Australian volunteering and the history ofScoung in Indonesia, and a wonderful enthralling surprise Balinesedance performed by Gede Eka Riadi.His Excellency Primo Alui Joelianto, expressed in his remarks hisgratude to Scouts Australia for their past and future social work inLombok.GOLD COAST ISL BASKETBALL COMPETITIONFor the second year in a row ScoutsQueensland has sponsored a basketballteam in the Intensity Super League orISL as it is commonly known which isplayed at the Southport School (TSS)every Sunday for around the next 10weeks. We have appointed Rob Garneras our coach for the second year in arow. Rob took us to the semi finals lastyear and hopes to go all the way this season. Our Marquee playeris Ryan Jefferies an excing player who scoresanywhere between 25 and 30 points a game.A few weeks ago all the potenal playersspent the day scrimmaging in alternanggroups of five so all the coaches could seetheir ability. Then in a very tense hour playerswere draed into the 11 sides makingup the compeon. I am now looking for asmuch support as we can give to urge theScout Queensland Shooters in their campaign to win the winnertake all $8000 prize money.
