CLARK JAMES MISHLERYoung Yup’ik woman and her boyfriend, AnchoragePORTRAIT ALASKAClark James MishlerOn view April 20 through Sept. 28ALASKANS ARE ECLECTIC and proud of it.Anyone who doubts this will be swayed by PortraitAlaska: Clark James Mishler, which features more than200 portraits of Alaskans taken during the past 20 years.Much like The Family of Man —a groundbreaking Museumof Modern Art photography exhibition in 1955 — thisproject demonstrates the independence and characterof Alaskans, while also emphasizing the ties that connectresidents across the largest state.A commercial photographer specializing inlocation portraiture, Mishler’s work is represented inthe Anchorage Museum collection and has appeared inhundreds of books and periodicals including NationalGeographic and Time. In 2007 he published thewell-received book Anchorage, Life at the Edge ofthe Frontier.“Many Alaska photographers are focused on thelandscape and wildlife. They want to get away from thecity stuff, away from people,” Mishler said. “I’m just theopposite. I’m drawn to people because I find them to bethe most interesting animal.”Chief Curator Julie Decker said Mishler hasestablished himself as one of Alaska’s primary portraitphotographers. He is four years into his Portrait of theDay series, in which he photographs people he randomlyencounters and then posts the results online. The imagesdemonstrate Mishler’s eye for character and puttingpeople in context, whether it’s a woman hangingsalmon to dry at a fish camp, 4-H kids holding chickensat the state fair, or a skateboarder in neon pinkConverse sneakers.Mishler hopes Alaskan visitors see some ofthemselves in these pictures. “I’d love them to say ‘Ha! Hegot it. He totally got it. This is who we are.’”Born in Trenton, Mich., Mishler has lived in Anchoragesince 1979. His first solo exhibition at the AnchorageMuseum was in 1982.This exhibition is presented as part of the Patricia B. Wolf SoloExhibition Series. MUSEUM AWARDED GRANTThe Robert Rauschenberg Foundation recently awarded a $50,000grant to the Anchorage Museum to support Gyre. The Gyre project,a collaboration with the Alaska SeaLife Center, addresses theproblem of marine debris through a 2013 scientific expedition anda 2014 contemporary art exhibition.
