However, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>superovulatory resp<strong>on</strong>se in mares treated withEPE, is far lower than <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> resp<strong>on</strong>se obtained ino<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r species. Ovulati<strong>on</strong> rates <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1.7 to 3.8ovulati<strong>on</strong>s per cycle have been reported after EPEtreatment in mares (McCue 1996).In cows, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> superovulatory resp<strong>on</strong>se is morec<strong>on</strong>sistent when FSH is injected twice daily than<strong>on</strong>ce daily (M<strong>on</strong>niaux et al. 1983). On <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> firstreport <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> successful superovulati<strong>on</strong> in maresDouglas et al. (1974) used EPE twice daily inseas<strong>on</strong>ally anovulatory mares, a subsequentpublicati<strong>on</strong> from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same laboratory showedsimilar resp<strong>on</strong>se using EPE <strong>on</strong>ce daily (Lapin andGin<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r 1977). Since <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> protocol used toinduce multiple ovulati<strong>on</strong>s in mares c<strong>on</strong>sist <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>cedaily EPE administrati<strong>on</strong>. Attempts to improve <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>effectiveness <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> EPE for inducti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> supeovulati<strong>on</strong>in mares have focused <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> daily dose (Woodsand Gin<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r 1982), time <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> treatment initiati<strong>on</strong>(Dippert et al. 1992) and utilisati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> purifiedfracti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> equine FSH (Rosas et al. 1998). Ourrecent study had dem<strong>on</strong>strated that more frequentdaily injecti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> EPE increased ovarian resp<strong>on</strong>seto EPE (Alvarenga et al. 1999). The purpose <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>present experiment was to compare superovulatoryresp<strong>on</strong>se and embryo recovery rates <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> cyclingmares follow EPE administrati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong>ce and twicedaily.MATERIALS AND METHODSEquine pituitary extract (EPE) was prepared atColorado State University utilising a methodpurposed by Guillou and Combarnous (1983).Seven days after ovulati<strong>on</strong> mares were treatedwith PGF2 (Dinoprost 10 mg) administered<strong>on</strong>ce, im and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n randomly assigned to <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2treatments: Group 1 (n=8) received 25 mg <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> EPE<strong>on</strong>ce daily and Group 2 (n=8) treated with 25 mg<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> EPE 2 times daily (8 am and 6 pm) given im.For both group <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> mares <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> treatment wasdisc<strong>on</strong>tinued when at least half <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> >30 mmdetected follicles reached 35 mm and 2,500 iu <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>hCG was administered iv.Mares were inseminated daily, until ovulati<strong>on</strong>,with semen from a fertile Arabian stalli<strong>on</strong>.Embryo recovery was performed 8 days afterovulati<strong>on</strong>. On <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> day <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> embryo recovery bloodsamples were collected to determine differences in<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> circulating levels <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> progester<strong>on</strong>e in mareswith different number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ovulati<strong>on</strong>s.RESULTSA higher number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ovulati<strong>on</strong>s occurred and alarger number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> embryos were recovered in marestreated twice daily than those treated <strong>on</strong>ce daily(P
