J U S T FOR OPENERS JAN 2012 I S S U E # 1 33PAGE 18“Opener and eBay Trivia” (“BIN” Buy-It-Now & “DNMR” Did Not Meet Reserve)CBO-BB-18, Top Stone Cigars Bridgeport CT, 8,$116.49A very hard to find Cigar Box Opener style and the finalprice of over $100 brought the CBO collectors battling forthis item. Most Cigar Box Opener prices have gone downfor most of the common styles but anytime an unusualstyle is sold, the action heats up. Glen Enloe one of theold time JFO members rejoined and is actively seekingCBOs to add to his collection.D-003-017, Dixie, 6, $153.50D-003-019, Leisy, 6, $125.51D-003-019, Leisy, 6, $151.00D-003-019, Leisy, 6, $153.50D-003-020, Miller, 6, $66.66D-003-020, Miller, 6, $67.66D-003-021, Reisch, 6, $202.09D-003-021, Reisch, 6, $199.59It was a great quarter for “D” cast iron openers. Severalbidders really wanted these tougher to find openers. Onebidder was from the U. S. but a couple of others werefrom Romania and Australia. With English cast ironopeners being offered on eBay this style has seen an increasein interest. The ones sold above were either frommy collection or from Art Santen’s. Trying to figure whatis hot on eBay is hard to do. If you are selling at theabove prices it can be a very enjoyable time.D-015-001, Excelsior / Red Feather, 6, $199.00D-015-001, Excelsior / Red Feather, 4, $200.00The D-15 has always been one of my favorite beer openersof any kind. With these two being sold, most seriouscollectors have the opener. A few years back I wouldhave rated the D-15, $250-$300 but now $200 tops thevalue out. A really great St. Louis opener.F-023-999, Coca-Cola (In Bowl), 8, $192.40F-029-999, Coca-Cola Superior NE, 8, $160.00Two “F” types with Coca-Cola that came from my collection. The F-23 with a folding corkscrew is the only Coca-Cola one in this style that I know of. The F-29 from Superior,Nebraska I have seen a couple of times. Both werein great shape and Coca-Cola collectors agreed. I cannotsay the prices were crazy but were good results. GoodCoca-Cola openers remain strong.FBOC-422, Amish Man, 6, $635.75At one time the “king of cast iron figurals” realized a goodbuy for someone collecting Cast Iron Figural openers. Afew years back it was a $1,500-$2,000 opener. A sign ofthe times for figural cast iron. Too many repros havereally hurt this area of the market.G-021-002, Old Heidelberg, 8, $105.05Sometimes on eBay, an item goes for a high price and Ithink why did that opener bring so much. I own an exampleand then started checking old auction and sale resultsand realized until this example from Don Sherman’s collectionwas sold I had the only one offered for sale before.Rarity almost always plays into an opener bringing a largeprice.H-002-999, Coca-Cola Botg Co. Liberal, Kans., 6,$158.05An unlisted soda H-2 and being Coca-Cola from Liberal,Kansas it garnered a lot of attention. Even for an H-2 theprice is probably on the high end but this was one neattown name. Town names almost always adds to the valueof an opener whether it is beer or soda.L-002-999, Jackson's Napa Soda, 4, $372.00L-002-CAN, Simeon Jones Ales St Johns, 6, $144.98Speaking of an item going through the roof, the L-2 Jackson’sNapa soda has seen a few sales on eBay and thisexample was probably the worst condition one I have seenand brings the most by far. You have to love it when twobidders go crazy over an item. The Canadian L-2 is hardto find and sought by local collectors and the final pricewas a very reasonable price. The Simeon Jones comeswith two slightly different ads.M-003-040, Deer Park (Red), 6, $351.99M-006-002, Hamms, 8, $169.49M-019-999, Coca-Cola (Repro), 6, $144.00“M” types saw one high “slider” result with a M-3-40Deer Park bringing the big money. The Red version is theeasiest color to find of the four different colors. I was runner-upon the M-6-2 Hamms bell and was told by an“advanced” Hamms collector it was worth a lot more. There have been at least three examples sold on eBay butHamms has a large number of collectors. Once again another“fantasy” M-19 Coca-Cola brings an outrageousprice. Will people ever learn and the answer is NO!N-026-999, Coca-Cola Washington GA, 8, $189.00N-070-8UL, Buckeye Brewing Co Best Beer GreenSeal Bottled Beer, 4, $205.05One of my sales was the N-26 Coca-Cola jar opener. Thefinal price was high as a couple of years ago I tried to sellit for $50.00 and got no takers. The N-70-UL Buckeye
