On siteTransport & LogisticsPIXmania.com:a high-performance logistics platform serving4 million customers!Mr. Hernanz, logistics director6 METTLER TOLEDO IndMagazine 2/2006Created 6 years ago, PIXmania.comis the leader in online sales ofhi-tech products and digital entertainment.Present in 27 European countries,PIXmania.com employs more than600 people, with sales of 349MEuro, 66% of which are outsideFrance.PIXmania is part of the FotoVista group, which, in addition to its indisputableexpertise in the field of photography, istoday a model for success in online com-The Cargoscan: key tool in the items databasemerce. FotoVista has 65 e-commerce sitesand is also involved in the fields of digitalentertainment (various brands: Foci,Press Labo Service photo processing, etc),children (www.apache.fr, etc, products forchildren) and business (Japan Diffusionphoto equipment wholesaler, www.e-merchant.come-commerce consultancy andservice, etc). The 40,000 references offeredon the PIXmania.com site can bedelivered anywhere in Europe within 24or 48 hours. Having a supremely efficientlogistics platform was therefore of majorimportance for the group! The FotoVista central warehouse:at the heart of the PIXmania.comlogistics operationThe FotoVista central warehouse suppliesthe various brands of the FotoVista group. In 6 years, the stock has increased from6 m 2 to 25,000m 2 ! In November 2005, thegroup moved premises in the Essonnearea in just 3 days and set up in a warehouseequipped with the very latestmachines (OSR storage and retrievalequipment, automatic truck guidancesystem, etc). With its highly specializedlogistics organization and automated

stock replenishment, the central warehousedeals with several hundred suppliersand sends out up to 25,000 parcels aday within the 27 countries of Europe. Tosupport its development, the group isplanning to take over the warehouseslocated opposite, which also cover anarea of 25000 m 2 .A key step: referencing items in thedatabaseHandling more than 40,000 referencesrequires specialist computerized managementsystems. Keen to source skillsinternally, the FotoVista group employsmore than 120 development engineers, some of whom are dedicated to the logisticsmanagement system. No operationsare carried out manually, and every stepin the supply chain can be tracked byreading bar codes. It all starts when thegoods are received. The packages aredepalletized, then each item is weighedand measured, as the storage area is specificto the weight and size of the product. To carry out these measures, 3 years ago,PIXmania bought Cargoscan staticweight/volume measurement equipment.“I was looking for a tool that was quickand simple to use, and that could beinterfaced with our computing system”says Mr Angel Hernanz, Fotovista's logisticsdirector. All the operator has to do isplace the package on the Cargoscan andOrder preparation areascan the bar code, and the system completesthe item sheet in the database in afew seconds, adding or updating theweight and the three dimensions of thepackage. This is an important step, as itdetermines the area in which the packagewill be stored in the warehouse. For “singleorders”, i.e. when only one item isdelivered, the weight/volume measurementis essential, as it will make it easierto choose the packaging for dispatch. Infact the size of box used is very importantto PIXmania, as only 3 sizes of box arecurrently used for the majority of dispatches.Since more than 60% of sales arein Europe, the transport is billed accordingto the weight/volume of parcels.“Purchasing the Cargoscan equipmentmeans we have an actual weight foritems, and makes billing the transportcost for customers easier from themoment the order is taken. As soon as anorder is placed online, we know whichproducts will go in which box and whichcarrier will be used for its dispatch”, saysMr Hernanz.METTLER TOLEDO supportsPIXmania's developmentWith expertise in a large number of fields(logistics, customer service, computing, online marketing, etc), the FotoVistagroup has just created e-merchant, arange of services for brands to run pan-European e-commerce operations. Thedevelopment of this subcontracting activityshould increase the storage requirementsof the central warehouse still further, and multiply the checks to be madeon carriers' billing. PIXmania is currentlyplanning to invest in the newCargoscan dynamic dimensioning modelin order to check the accuracy of the billsreceived from its carriers.www.pixmania.comAutomated conveyor for the preparationof single ordersMETTLER TOLEDO IndMagazine 2/2006Box 47

To address this issue, Samsung carried outan internal investigation and identifiedthat unlike their transport firms they werenot using dimensional weight to calculatetheir shipping costs. This study furtherdisclosed that these same transport firmswere using METTLER TOLEDO's dimensioning, weighing and identification solutionsto charge Samsung. With this knowledgein hand, Samsung realised thattheir shipping costs could be dramaticallyreduced by having a similar solutioncapable of measuring 3000 items per day.Samsung Electronicsimproving profitabilityMETTLER TOLEDO Cargoscan helps Samsung reducetheir shipping costs through process improvements.Fully-automated solutionToday, when an order is received employeesare instructed to pick items and placethem on a conveyor fitted with METTLERTOLEDO's CS9000. Dynamically, theweight, dimensions and identification ofthese items are then captured and automaticallysent to Samsung's host system, reducing the need for human interventionand guesswork. A bar code label is thengenerated and affixed to each item. Anemployee then consolidates the measureditems in the shipping area. With 55.3 bil USD in sales in 2004, Samsungis one of the world's leading consumerelectronics manufacturers. However, this image is very different from itshumble beginnings as a trade export businessselling dried Korean fish, vegetablesand fruit to Manchuria and Beijing in1938.Such a transformation is based on Samsung'sambition to continuously identifyopportunities to improve the financialstructure and profitability of its 27 productionsubsidiaries, 37 sales subsidiaries,2 logistics subsidiaries, and 11 researchcentres. Two such facilities that have dramaticallyimproved their profitability are Samsung-Tianjin and Samsung-Suzhou. As themain distribution centres for Samsung’sChinese operations, Tianjin and Suzhouare important components of the firmsglobal supply chain shipping thousands ofconsumer electronics products annually. However, shipping this many productspresented Samsung with an age-oldchallenge: how to lower their ever-increasingshipping costs.Reducing shipping cost discrepanciesAlthough these warehouses were fittedwith automatic material handling equipmentand high-bay racking serviced bypallet trucks, Samsung was consistentlyreceiving shipping invoices stating discrepanciesbetween what they werecharged by their transport firms and whatthey were charging their customers.Totalling nearly four per cent of its totallogistics costs, these discrepancies wereunrecoverable from its customers andincreasingly taxing on the firm's bottomline. The non-intrusive, two-belt design of theCS9000 meant that no major re-engineeringwork had to be carried out, and theend result has improved Samsung's orderfulfilment process and significantly reducedits shipping costs. The success of this installation exemplifiesMETTLER TOLEDO's commitment tohelping customers achieve cost-justifiableprocess improvements.www.samsung.comBox 6METTLER TOLEDO IndMagazine 2/20069

New ProductOperating errors are preventableWeighing terminal guides operatorsthrough the weighing processYou can prevent operators from entering the wrong dataor forgetting to enter it entirely: The new IND690Sysweighing terminal is freely programmable to customerspecificrequirements, and can guide the operator stepby-stepthrough the weighing application. No other weighing terminal is as flexible in its display of information, programmingof weighing software, and integration into EDP systems as the newIND690Sys application terminal.Operator identification-a potential requirement forISO-certified operations. This input mask and otherscannot be skipped-they must be dealt with. One waythe application terminal prevents faulty input is byactivating only those keys that are necessary forprocessing the input mask (keys for entering charactersand numbers, confirming entries). The terminal is freely programmable to customer-specific weighing applications. Our engineers work with you to develop the optimal solution thatenables you, for example, to guide the operator of the IND690Sys step-by-stepthrough the weighing process. The weighing terminal can also check dataentries, as well as prevent data from being manipulated, and prompt andinput masks from being skipped over.Use the flexibility of the IND690Sys to design the simplest, fastest and mostsecure operating processes possible, reduce operating errors, and boostproductivity.Generally, all data can be read by bar code andRFID scanners. This is especially practical for articleand order numbers with numerous digits, as itprevents typing mistakes and saves time. Whenconnected to database tables, the IND690Sys caneven check the input/scanned data, and commenton it with corresponding messages.Connecting a host computer system such as SAPfurther simplifies and accelerates the weighingprocess: The IND690Sys communicates with SAP,receives weighing orders and sends back results. The weighing process begins step-by-step, as soonas identification- and order-relevant data is entered(below is an example of a piece count application):1. Place a box on the pan (automatic tare)2. Place a single piece on the pan for target-weightcontrol3. Totalize until the order total is reached4.
