Here’s a guideto some unique-to-Ottawa expressionsthat you might find useful!GEOGRAPHYSome of the expressions aregeographical in nature. You shouldknow, for instance, that “The Hill”refers to Parliament Hill, home of theHouse of Commons and Senate andthe core of Canadian democracy.Parliament Hill“The Market” refers to the ByWardMarket – not just a building, or a oneortwo-day-a-week farmers’ market, but a whole neighbourhood. Boundedroughly by Sussex Drive, Murray Street,Dalhousie Street and George Street,“the Market” is home to a 363-daya-yearoutdoor market; shops andboutiques; 120+ bars, restaurants andother places to eat and drink; and athriving residential district.ByWard MarketIf you listen to a traffic report, you’ll hearmention of “The Queensway” butthey’re really referring to the main eastwestthoroughfare–Highway 417. “TheSplit” refers to the segment in the eastend where Highway 174 splits off tohead to the neighbourhood of Orléanswhile the 417 continues through easternOntario and the Québec border.“The Château” (often pronouncedmore like “shadow”) refers to theFairmont Château Laurier. “The Canal”can only refer to the UNESCO WorldHeritage Site, the Rideau Canal. And“LeBreton Flats” is the area justoutside the Canadian War Museumthat is also hosts the fabulousCisco Ottawa Bluesfest each July.LeBreton FlatsBefore 2003, the downtown areaacross the Ottawa River fromdowntown Ottawa was the City of“Hull”. But following an amalgamationof several Québec municipalities, thecorrect name is now Gatineau, thoughmany still refer to Hull (or at least the“Hull sector” of Gatineau).Ottawa went through a similaramalgamation of 11 municipalities tocreate a new, larger City of Ottawa in2001. You’ll still hear people refer to“Kanata,” “Nepean,” “Vanier,” and“Rockcliffe Park,” among others, thatused to be separate municipalities.LOOKING AHEAD TO SUMMERTIME!Calypso Theme Waterpark opened just east of Ottawa last June as a seasonalattraction and what a season it had!
