Research Centre for Applied PsychologyDirector’s ReportThe Research Centre for Applied Psychology(ReCAP), originally established in 1988, continuesto support and encourage the research initiativesof staff and students within the School ofPsychology. ReCAP’s primary role is to facilitatethe development and implementation of qualityresearch projects by providing seeding funding toassist staff and students in developing new researchprojects, assisting staff with writing grants andproviding mentoring to assist with publications. In 2006, a sub-group of researchers within ReCAPwas awarded Tier 2 status at Curtin University. Theaim of this new centre, called Psychological WellbeingAcross the Lifespan (PsyLIFE), is to understand andenhance psychological health and well-being acrossthe lifespan. With the support of ReCAP and PsyLIFE,the research activities of the staff have steadilyincreased. In 2007, staff and postgraduate studentswithin the School were chief investigators onexternal research funding amounting to over $5million. This included funding from the WA Officeof Mental Health in WA for the Aussie Optimismproject, with team leader, Associate ProfessorClare Roberts. International funding through theUS Department of Health and Human Serviceswas awarded to Professor David Hay as a resultof international links with Professor RichardTodd from Washington University. Other researchgrants included NH&MRC Project Grants, ARCDiscovery Grants, Healthway Project Grants,Australian Telstra Grants, a Criminology ResearchCouncil Grant and funding for PhD students fromWoodside Energy Ltd and CSIRO.Increasing the number and quality of refereedpublications remains an important priority forReCAP, and in 2007 5 book chapters, 37 refereedjournal articles, and 5 refereed conference paperswere published. Also, over 50 papers werepresented by staff and students at conferences ofnational and international significance. Apart fromproviding suitable avenues for the disseminationof their research, this also provides staff andstudents exposure to “cutting edge” developmentsin their particular area of Psychology and HumanCommunication Science. Several of these werekeynote addresses, including one by Professor DavidHay at the First International ADHD conference inWürzburg, Germany in June. Paula Nicolaou, oneof the School’s Masters students, won the ElsieHarwood Award, and as a result was invited topresent her research at the Psychology and AgeingInterest Group Conference (PAIG), Geelong,Victoria, in November, 2007.ReCAP and PsyLIFE play an important role infostering post-graduate research students, and theHDR program within the School of Psychologycontinued to expand in 2007. With76 students enrolled in the PhD/MPhil programs, it is one of the largestprograms in the University. The Centrehad 8 PhD completions in 2007. Thatwe are attracting many students of highcalibre is evidenced by our success inboth University scholarship rankings andsuccess with external scholarships. ReCAPplays a major role in supporting thestudents’ research initiatives. The Schoolof Psychology and ReCAP hold an annualpostgraduate student seminar, the Denis GlencrossMemorial Student Conference. The 13 th in thisseries was held in July. This seminar provides postgraduatestudents with an opportunity to showcasetheir research projects with staff and fellow students, and to provide a model for fourth-year studentsconsidering a higher degree by research.ReCAP and PsyLIFE are dedicated to supportingthe University’s commitment to innovation andexcellence in teaching and research for the benefitof our students and the wider community.Jan Piek, PhDDirector, Research & DevelopmentReCAP Annual Report 2007 3

Research Centre for Applied PsychologyResearch ActivitiesThe area of childhood and adolescent mental health continues to be a priority area within ReCAP and isa key focus of PsyLIFE. This broad topic has been targeted for grant support and has been very successful indrawing in research funds. Notable achievements and ongoing projects in this area for the year 2007 includethe following major activities:Major ActivitiesAussie Optimism Dissemination Project - Secondary DisseminationChief Investigators: Associate Professor Clare Roberts, Dr R Kane, Dr R Rooney,Dr Y Pintabona, Dr M NesaFunded by:WA Office of Mental HealthProject Term: 2006-2009Total Funding: $511,097This project aims to extend the AussieOptimism Dissemination Project to furthersecondary dissemination efforts in bothmetropolitan and rural Education Districts inWA, and to non-government schools. The AussieOptimism Program is a school-based mental healthpromotion program, which has shown efficacyin preventing anxiety and depression in youngadolescents. These common childhood mentalhealth problems affect up to 18% of youngeradolescents in Australia. The original study foundthat this program can be easily disseminated intoprimary schools, that teacher training results inincreases in teachers knowledge, concern andawareness about mental health promotion in theirstudents, and that they feel more confident toimplement such programs. Year 6 and 7 teacherstaught the programs with a high level of fidelity. The results indicated that Aussie Optimism plusteacher training with or without coaching resultedin; decreased prevalence of depressive disordersin depressed children after the transition to highschool and increased incidence of recovery fromdepressive disorders at follow-up. Also, AussieOptimism plus teacher training and coachingresulted in reduced likelihood of students takingup drinking at post-test & follow-up and reducedlikelihood of smoking at follow-up.6 ReCAP Annual Report 2007

Research Centre for Applied PsychologyRelating genetic, biological and behavioural markersof early vulnerability in conduct problem childrenChief Investigators: Professor M. Dadds (UNSW) & Professor D HayCollaborators: D. J. Hawes, J. Brennan & Dr R. UrwinFunded by:NHMRCProject Term: 2007-2009Total Funding: $421,875Conduct problems in childhood are a major predictor of adult mental health problems but very littleis known about which of these children go on to develop which adult disorder and why. David Hay isworking with UNSW on a unique sample of some 1100 boys from the Far West of NSW who havebehavioural difficulties and are flown to Sydney each year for assessment and to check on their behaviouralprogression. A number of key candidate genes are being assessed, along with a range of behaviouralmeasures which go beyond standard questionnaires to include computer-based measures of response toemotional stimuli, an area where such children often do not do well. The study will identify which boys aremost genetically vulnerable. While such problems are rarer in girls, a new grant is planned to examine theirspecific issues.ReCAP Annual Report 2007 7

Research Centre for Applied PsychologyMotor coordination in infancy and its relationship to motorand psychosocial development in childhoodChief Investigators:Collaborators:Funded by:Project Term: 2005-2007Total Funding: $ 120,000Professor Jan Piek & Associate Professor Leigh SmithProfessor Jaap Oosterlaan (Vrije University, Amsterdam) , Dr Natalie Gasson& Dr Nicholas BarrettARC Discovery Projects GrantFew studies have examined the impact of early motordevelopment on later development, even though there isevidence to show that these early movements influencelater development. Motor development has been shownto impact not only on later motor development, but alsoon cognitive, emotional and social development. Thisstudy has data on early motor ability for around 70 infantswhich include children born preterm who are at risk ofdevelopmental disorders. Most of these children have nowreached school age and have been assessed on their motor, cognitive and psychosocial development. One finding, accepted in 2007 for publication in Human MovementScience, demonstrates the link between early infant grossmotor development and later cognitive development, inparticular, working memory. These results will provideinformation on early markers for developmental disordersand appropriate intervention techniques that can beinitiated in infancy.8 ReCAP Annual Report 2007

Research Centre for Applied PsychologyIntra-familial adolescent sex offenders:Psychological factors and treatment issuesChief Investigators: Grant, J. & Indermaur, D.,Collaborators: Thornton, J., Stevens, G., Chamarette, C., Halse, A.Funded by:Criminology Research CouncilProject Term: 4 yearsTotal Funding: $142,000This study, completed in 2007, provides a detailed description of 38 intrafamilial adolescent sex offenders(IASOs) and their families attending a community based treatment program. The research examined theIASOs psychological profile, treatment needs, family structures, and experiences of treatment. TheIASOs studied were highly likely to be victims of sexual and/or physical abuse within the family; hada high number of co-occurring psychological, developmental, and social problems; and a high rate offamily fragmentation and dysfunction. The treatment included interventions for both the IASO and theirfamilies. Parents and adolescents reported positive changes in the family system at the end of treatment,a finding confirmed by significant changes on a measure offamily functioning. Parents and adolescents also reportedthat the IASOs were less impulsive and more likely to haveestablished age appropriate friendships following treatment. Itwas concluded that treatment for IASOs needs to be holistic, including both the IASO and their family and that policy in thisarea needs to take account of the predisposing and precipitatingfactors in IASOs. This study is linked to the PSYLife goals ofconducting research in the area of interventions with children.ReCAP Annual Report 2007 9

Research Centre for Applied PsychologyNationalAssociate Professor Clare Roberts, in collaboration with Professor Matt Sanders from UQ, and TrevorMazzucchelli and Lisa Studman from the WA Disability Services Commission, are working on a studywhich incorporates a controlled trial of a variety of formats of a family based early intervention programfor children with developmental disabilities who also have elevated levels of disruptivebehaviour. Trials of individual family based interventions have shown effectiveness in decreasing childchallenging behaviour, dysfunctional parenting practises and maternal stress. This study was published inthe Journal of Child and Adolescent Clinical Psychology in early 2006. More recently, this collaboration hasbeen evaluating the efficacy of group-based, and self directed interventions based on the Stepping StonesTriple P model. These formats are both cost effective and provide flexible and accessible intervention forfamilies with different needs. In association with this research, PhD student Nicole Walsh and Honoursstudent Kristy Myers have been investigating therapeutic processes and the impact that these have on thesuccess of Stepping Stones Triple P groups. The group program has been associated with enhancementof parenting styles, and parental outcomes and satisfaction has been associated with the working alliancebetween group facilitators and parents, as well as therapeutic interaction processes that limit parentresistance.Collaboration with Professor Jan Piek and Professor Murray Dyck (Griffith University) resultedin several publications in 2007. Originally funded by the NHMRC, this research investigates specificability profiles that characterise different childhood disorders. This research also involvescollaboration with Professor David Hay, Associate Professor Leigh Smith and Dr Bob Kane fromPsyLIFE, and Professor Mike Anderson (UWA), and Professor Joachim Hallmayer (Stanford).A recent successful ARC Discovery Grant hasresulted in collaboration with Associate ProfessorJan Grant and Professor Margot Schofield fromLaTrobe University on a project titled Supervisionof psychotherapy: Understandingthe processes that build professionalcompetence. Clinical supervision is the mainmethod of assuring accountability, providingsupport, and preventing burn-out in mental healthprofessionals. Yet relatively little is know about theprocesses of supervision and how they impact ontherapist competence. This study addresses callsfor systematic evaluation of clinical supervision. Itinvolves a multi-method qualitative interview study ofpsychotherapy supervisor-supervisee pairs. It aims tobetter understand the supervisory processes that buildprofessional competence and factors that influencesupervision effectiveness. A model will be developedthat links supervision processes with superviseecompetence with clients; it will inform policydevelopment, professional training and practice.36 ReCAP Annual Report 2007

Research Centre for Applied PsychologyInternationalThe Australian Twin ADHD Project headed by Professor David Hay, completed an NIH InternationalCollaborative Grant in 2006 which has allowed the flow of staff and data between the US, the Netherlandsand Curtin. Following on from this collaboration, the US National Institute of Mental Health awardeda grant of $US 2.4M to a consortium from Washington University, St Louis, the School of Psychology at Curtin and the Queensland Institute of MedicalResearch for a project entitled The Molecular Genetics of Inattention inAustralia. It utilises advanced statistical methods and the resources of ProfessorHay and Professor Florence Levy’s (UNSW) Australian Twin ADHD Projectto determine just how many genetically distinct types of ADHD there are. While ADHD is often portrayed at least by the media as hyperactivity, the mostcommon form is actually the inattentive type where the inability to concentrate isdisruptive at home, school and in social relationships and this grant will focus onfamilies where there is a severe form of the inattention type. Curtin will identifythe families and oversee their clinical assessment, while QIMR will carry outthe molecular genetic work on the DNA from these families. This project alsoinvolves Research Fellow, Dr Neilson Martin and several PhD students.Collaboration by Professor Jan Piek and Professor David Hay fromPsyLIFE with Professor Joe Sergeant and Professor Jaap Oosterlaan from theVrije University, Amsterdam continues through an ARC International Linkagegrant. This research investigates the relationship between ADHD andDCD (Developmental Coordination Disorder), and focuses on both theneuropsychological and the genetic overlap between these conditions. It has alsoled to other projects such as the investigation of executive functioning in pretermchildren which is being conducted by Professor Jan Piek and Professor JaapOosterlaan. In 2007, Professor Piek and Professor Oosterlaan jointly supervisedan honours student at Curtin in this area of research, and Professor Oosterlaanalso contributed to the projects of several Curtin PhD students.ReCAP Annual Report 2007 37
