:.432 ZOOLOGICAL GEOGRAPHY. [part ill.greatest on the Austro-Malay or Australian side. We have nowto consider what further light can be thrown on the subject bythe consideration of the peculiar genera of Celebes, and of thosecuriosities or anomalies of distribution to which we havereferred.Nine genera of birds are altogether peculiar to Celebes ;threemore are found only in one other island, and seem to be typicallyCelebesian ; while one is found in the Sula islands (whichbelongs to the Celebes group) and probably exists in Celebesalso. The following is a list of these 13 genera1. Artamides... (Campephagidse) 8. Monachalcyon (Alcedinidae)2. titreptocitta .. (Corvidse) 9. Cittura_... „3. Charitomis.. „ 10. Ceycopsis ... „4. Gazzola, (s. g.) „ 11. Meropogon .. (Meropidse)5. Basilomis .. (Sturnidse) 12. Prioniturus (Psittacidas)6. Enochs ... „ 13. Megacephalon (Megapodiidae)7. Scissirostrum „Of the above, Artamides, Monachalcyon,Cittura, and Megacephalon, are modifications of types characteristic of the Australianregion. All are peculiar to Celebes except Cittura, found also inthe Sanguir islands to the northward, but which seems to belongto the Moluccan group. Strcptocitta, Charitomis, and Gazzola, are peculiar types of Corvidre; the two former allied to themagpies, the latter to the jackdaws.Charitomis is known onlyfrom the Sula islands east of Celebes, and is closely related toStrcptocitta. There is nothing comparable to these three groupsin any of the Malay islands, and they seem to have relationsrather with the Corvidse of the old-world northern continent.Basilomis, Enodcs, and Scissirostrum, are remarkable forms ofSturnidse.Basilomis has a beautiful compressed crest, which inthe allied species found in Ceram is elongated behind. Enodcshas remarkable red superciliary streaks, but seems allied toCalornis. Scissirostrum seems also allied to Calomis in generalstructure, but has a very peculiarly formed bill and nostrils.Wecan hardly say whether these three forms show more affinity toOriental or to Australian types, but they add to the weight ofevidence as to the great antiquity and isolation of the Celebesianfauna. Scissirostrum has been classed with Euryceros, a Mada-
