[part hi.are many interesting forms <strong>of</strong> Nymphalida?, Lyceenidse, andPapilionidse. <strong>The</strong> peculiar or characteristic forms are Amauris(Danaidse); Gnophodes, Leptoneura, Bicyclus, Heteropsis andCcenyra (Satyridse) ; Acrcea (Acraeidae) ; LacJmoptcra, Precis,Salamis, Crenis, Godartia, Amphidcma, Pscudacrcea, Catuna,Euryphcnc, Romalceosoma, Hamanumida, Aterica, Harma,Mencris, Charaxes, and Philognoma (Nymphalidae) ; Pentila,Liptena, Durbania, Zcritis, Capys, Phytala, Epitola, Heivitsoniaand Deloneura (Lycamidffi) ;Pscudopontia, Idmais, Tcracolus,Callosune (Pieridse) ; Abantis, Ceratrichia and Caprona (Hesperidse).<strong>The</strong> total number <strong>of</strong> species known is about 750which is very poor for an extensive tropical region, but thisis not to be wondered at when <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> much <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>country is considered. It is also, no doubt, partly due to ourcomparative ignorance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great equatorial forest district,which is <strong>the</strong> only part likely to be very productive in thisorder <strong>of</strong> insects.Coleoptcra.— In our first representative family, Cicindelidseor tiger-beetles, <strong>the</strong> Ethiopian region is ra<strong>the</strong>r rich, having 13genera, 11 <strong>of</strong> which are peculiar to it; and among <strong>the</strong>se aresuch remarkable forms as Manticora, Myrmecoptcra and Dromica<strong>with</strong> Mcgacephala, a genus only found elsewhere in Australiaand South America.In Carabidae or carnivorous ground beetles, <strong>the</strong>re areabout 75 peculiar genera. Among <strong>the</strong> most characteristicare Anthia, Polyrhina, Graphipierus and Piczia, which arealmost all peculiar ; while Orthogonius, Hexagonia, Macrochilus,Thyreopterus, Eudcma, and Abacctus are common to this and<strong>the</strong> Oriental region ;and Hypolithus to <strong>the</strong> Neotropical.Out <strong>of</strong> 27 genera <strong>of</strong> Buprestidse, or metallic beetles, only 6 arepeculiar to <strong>the</strong> region, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most remarkable being Polybothrus,confined to Madagascar.Sternocera and Chrysochroa arecharacteristic <strong>of</strong> this region and <strong>the</strong> Oriental ; it has Julodis incommon <strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mediterranean sub-region, and Bclionota<strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> Malayan.<strong>The</strong> region is not rich in Lucanidae, or stag-beetles, possessingonly 10 genera, 7 <strong>of</strong> which are peculiar, but most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m con-
