[part 11.productive deposits be found in South America of middle Tertiaryage.Pliocene Mammalia of the Antilles.—These may be noticedhere, as they are of special interest, proving the connection ofthe larger West Indian Islands with the Continent some time inthe later Tertiary period. They consist of remains of two largeanimals belonging to the South American Chinchillidse, found incave deposits in the island of Anguilla, and forming two newgenera, AmUyrhiza and Loxomylus ; and remain allied to Megalonyxfrom Cuba, which have been named Megalocnus andMyomorpkus.Eocene fauna of South America.—The few remains yet discoveredin the Tertiary deposits of the Pampas which are believedto be of Eocene age, are exceedingly interesting, because theyshow us another change in the scenery of the great drama oflife ; there being apparently a considerable resemblance, at thisepoch, between South America and Europe. They consist of alarge extinct feline animal, Eutemnodus ; of Palceotherium andAnoplotherium, the well-known extinct Ungulates of the EuropeanTertiaries, and which have never been found in NorthAmerica; and of three genera of Eodents,Theridromys, alliedto Echimys, and found also in the Eocene and Miocene of FranceMcgamys, allied to the living Capromys of the Antilles, andalso to Palaiomys, an extinct form of the French Miocene ;anda very large animal referred to Arvicola, a genus found also inthe Pliocene deposits of South America, and abundant in thenorthern hemisphere. No Edentates have been found. The resemblances of this fauna to that of Europe rather thanto any part of America, are so strong, that they can hardly beaccidental. We greatly want, however, more information on thispoint, as well as some corresponding evidences as to the conditionof West and South Africa about thesame epoch, before we canventure to speculate on their bearing as regards the early migrationsof organic forms.G 1 "" 1""'' "* "*O lGeneral Remarks on the Extinct Mammalian Fauna of the Old
