Seconded by Director DannyPeterson. Motion carried unanimously.Approval of Consent AgendaDirector Angela Griffin moved th<strong>at</strong> the Board of Educ<strong>at</strong>ion approve the Consent Agenda of January 10,2012 as submitted. Mr. Chris Willis then introduced andacknowledged 5 School Psychologists who have received honors for their work in the District. They are ErinRamsdell, David Martin, Dean Hamos, Michael Self-Bence, and Corinne Coolidge. Congr<strong>at</strong>ul<strong>at</strong>ions to all.Standards Based Educ<strong>at</strong>ionMs. Carol M<strong>at</strong>sui, Assistant Superintendent, acknowledged the elementary school teachers in the audience.She upd<strong>at</strong>ed the Board on the grading system in place.<strong>Public</strong> CommentThe following p<strong>at</strong>rons made comment on any item of interest. He thanked theKiwanis and Gordon Olson for helping the District with their don<strong>at</strong>ion. He said he hears from the groupsth<strong>at</strong> are struggling as well as the success stories. He noted th<strong>at</strong> the District has many, many staff from theDistrict th<strong>at</strong> are out in the schools helping the students and the staff to understand SBE. He assureseveryone th<strong>at</strong> we moved above the common core because we felt the urgency. He applauded the Board,the teachers, the students on their hard work. He noted the article in Family Circle about Standards BasedEduc<strong>at</strong>ion. He said we have made many adjustments as we go along. He again said, “We are listening.” Hepointed out to the Board Members Policy 2420P about homework. He explained th<strong>at</strong> Mr. Leland will explainthe process for a new <strong>Federal</strong> <strong>Way</strong> High School. He appreci<strong>at</strong>es the don<strong>at</strong>ion from the FWEA and thesupport of the Mirror Newspaper. Mr. Neu commented on Jean Licari and how she was a leader in theDistrict.School Board CommentsDirector Barney echoed Mr. Neu’s thoughts on Jean Licari. He thanked the mentors, teachers and theparents who spend hours with the children.Director Claire Wilson thanked the people who made comments on SBE and the grading. He said it iscritically important to continue to have dialogue but to also continue the work. She would like to havemore convers<strong>at</strong>ion about the work going onDirector Angela Griffin responded to one question which was, “Are we going to stick with it?” And theanswer is most definitely.


Minutes of School Board <strong>Meeting</strong> January 10, 2012 Page 3Director Danny Peterson said he visited Twin Lakes Elementary and Principal Miller and he said they areworking hard. Director Peterson said if anyone has an hour to give, visit a school and mentor a student. Heconnected with some of the individuals who gave public comment this evening.Director Moore said he spent two hours with a teacher who is having difficulty with the grading system. Hesaid there are a lot of gre<strong>at</strong> things going on here. He noted th<strong>at</strong> we are trying to get rid of the gradeinfl<strong>at</strong>ion for our students. He urged everyone to go to <strong>Federal</strong> <strong>Way</strong> High and see wh<strong>at</strong> it’s like to learnthere. And then come back to the Board and complain if you still don’t see the necessity of a new building.Facilities Upd<strong>at</strong>eMr. Rod Leland upd<strong>at</strong>ed the Board on how we go about building a school. He said the process begins withwh<strong>at</strong> the resources are after you understand th<strong>at</strong> the facility you have does not meet the needs of allstudents. He noted th<strong>at</strong> the building needs to be flexible and convertible. First you need to know wh<strong>at</strong> theprogram is. The public needs to be engaged in the process. We need to hear from educ<strong>at</strong>ors and frompeople who have designed successful schools. He said on January 23, 2012 a meeting is scheduled <strong>at</strong><strong>Federal</strong> <strong>Way</strong> High School to talk about the EP&O Levy and to have convers<strong>at</strong>ion about ideas of wh<strong>at</strong> a newhigh school should have.Mr. Leland continued to upd<strong>at</strong>e the Board and community on the Sunnycrest, Valhalla, Panther Lake, andLakeland Elementaries and the w<strong>at</strong>er situ<strong>at</strong>ion. He said the Service Center is on time and on budget andthe occupancy permit has been awarded. The Nutrition Services building will start soon and the New ESC isoccupied!Family Partnership Upd<strong>at</strong>eMs. Trise Moore, Director of the Family and Community Partnership Office shared the work of hercolleagues and the outcomes of the Family Partnership Office. She introduced Tina and Tina who areexceptional volunteers and advoc<strong>at</strong>es for the Partnership office.Legisl<strong>at</strong>ive Upd<strong>at</strong>eDirector Barney said th<strong>at</strong> the Supreme Court ruled th<strong>at</strong> the St<strong>at</strong>e has not complied to fully fund educ<strong>at</strong>ionand the court has given it back to the legisl<strong>at</strong>ure to make reforms.Levy Upd<strong>at</strong>eAssistant Superintendent Sally McLean reminded the Board about the replacement levy funds: educ<strong>at</strong>ionalprograms and school oper<strong>at</strong>ions including classroom support, technology and security staff, <strong>at</strong>hletics andactivities, maintenance, and transport<strong>at</strong>ion. Ms McLean’s overview included the reason we need a levy,wh<strong>at</strong> the levy pays for, and how we compare with other districts? She then talked about the Capital Levywhich will fund the replacement of <strong>Federal</strong> <strong>Way</strong> High School and other capital improvements to educ<strong>at</strong>ionalfacilities of the District.Authorize Sale of Maintenance and Oper<strong>at</strong>ions and Transport<strong>at</strong>ion SiteMs. McLean asked the Board to approve the sale of the MOT site.Director Griffin moved to authorize the sale of the current Maintenance, Oper<strong>at</strong>ions and Transport<strong>at</strong>ionsite. Seconded by Director Barney. Motion carried unanimously.Appointment of Kidder M<strong>at</strong>thews as Broker of RecordDirector Griffin moved to approve the appointment of Kidder M<strong>at</strong>thews as the broker of record for thedisposition of the MOT, dependent upon successful negoti<strong>at</strong>ion of an exclusive sales agency contract.Seconded by Director Barney. Motion carries unanimously.
