Ice hockey at Cambridge is a tradition that stretches as far back as 1885 and is recognised, by the Hockey Hall of Fame, as the
oldest ongoing rivalry in the sport of hockey. So come lace up with our international squad and join us in our annual Varsity
Match against Oxford, our winter tour to Switzerland, and the mayhem we enjoy as part of our social calendar.

Varsity Match
Saturday 4 March 2005, Oxford Ice Rink
Cambridge 1 – 6 Oxford
The 87th Varsity Match was held at Oxford this year in front of a large crowd. With a relatively young team against an experienced
Oxford side, it was always going to be a difficult game and in the end the Dark Blues proved too strong, winning 6 – 1.
The match got off to a great start, played at high tempo. Good scoring chances were created and there was good physical play
on both sides which entertained the crowd. Oxford got the first goal 14 minutes into the first period. Cambridge pulled the
game back in the second period with an equaliser from Tom Pope, only to be frustrated by letting Oxford regain the lead within
20 seconds. In the third period, Cambridge tried hard to equalise but Oxford outplayed them to win.
Tom Pope was Cambridge Man of the Match and Calum Nicholson, the Cambridge goalie, received the most valuable player
award.
Representative Honours
Tom Pope was selected by the British Ice Hockey Team to play in the University Olympiad.
Other News
CUIHC has benefited greatly from sponsorship given by Cambridge University Press over the last 2 years and is going into the
3rd year of its partnership with them. The support has allowed Cambridge to field a competitive team in the British University
Ice Hockey Association cup (BUIHA), which has been beneficial given the rapid expansion of Ice Hockey across UK universities.
CUIHC has continued its yearly tour to Switzerland in early January for an extensive training week to compensate for a lack of
an ice rink in Cambridge. The club continues to investigate different avenues for creating an ice rink in Cambridge.
