2 A WORD FROM THE CHAIRMAN As Chairman of the University Sports Syndicate I am delighted to introduce this first Annual Review of Sport at Cambridge. The diversity, range and achievements of Cambridge students in the sporting arena during the last academic year were significant in many areas. Academic excellence was matched by some outstanding performances and the same hunger for pre-eminence which is so characteristic of Cambridge students. The Sports Syndicate has been pleased to see many developments and improvements over the year and our thanks must go to Tony Lemons, Director of Physical Education, for overseeing these with his team based at Fenner’s. We have reports from nearly all sports clubs registered with the Sports Syndicate, as well as news of plans for the much-anticipated Sports Centre at West Cambridge. A WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR What is so special about Cambridge that you would want to spend 22 years working to develop sport at that University? I am frequently asked this question by colleagues working in national centres of excellence or governing bodies of sport. This is currently followed by a polite enquiry as to whether I'm joining the 2012 Olympic Organising Team? I have answered these questions in different ways at different times but I'm still perplexed as to why people ask the question… Why wouldn't one enjoy working at Cambridge? Cambridge University is exciting. A combination of bright multi-talented students and academics at the cutting edge. University politics, a daily challenge for anyone with a cause they believe in. Sustaining Cambridge's reputation for offering an all-round education extending beyond the pure discipline of academic study and embracing such a variety of cultural and sporting activities, this is a cause worth standing up for, even in a small way. The University's Mission Statement acknowledges that these cultural and sporting activities must play an integral part in University life, but with higher education becoming a global market place, Cambridge must move in order to remain competitive, both in its academic disciplines and in other areas in order to attract the best available students. At first sight, Cambridge appears to be well catered for in terms of its sports provision. The national publicity attracted by the Varsity Matches, in particular, the Boat Race and the Varsity Rugby match, coupled with the wonderful College playing fields, shields major deficiencies in the provision for sport as compared with many other universities. A number of sports are relatively well catered for at elite University team level: cricket, rowing, rugby and athletics have made significant progress through investment in their facilities in recent years, although all University sports clubs struggle for funds. Most other sports, especially indoor sports, have poor or non-existent facilities at University representative level. Individual Colleges, of course, provide their own students with a range of facilities for College level sport but not all Colleges have the means or the land to do this, so provision at this level is variable. Indoor sports have consistently missed out on University and College funding. The absence of a University sports hall and a swimming pool are two glaring examples of facilities that are found in almost all universities who would consider themselves world leaders. Almost 80% of the University's sports clubs have no training or competition venues and compete for expensive and frequently congested City facilities. Individual students who wish to train for fitness for health-related reasons have to use the cramped Fitness Suite and out of date Circuit Room and gymnasium at Fenner's, all of which are permanently in use and massively over-subscribed. The competitive structure provided by the Colleges, combined with the strong historic base of University clubs, remains Cambridge's strength. We now have a great opportunity with the inclusion of the West Cambridge Sports Centre in the Cambridge 800th Anniversary Campaign to take sport a quantum step forward. But as many Cambridge captains will be saying to their players, the time for talking is over; we must now go out and do the job. We must now raise the funds; nothing else remains in our path. Now that is an exciting challenge for all sporting alumni but one that we have to achieve if sport is to retain its important and valued place in University life.
