10 Sport for all The new Sports Centre will ensure that all members of the University can have affordable access to first-class sports facilities, whether for an occasional game of badminton, a weekly aerobics class or a daily swim. Sporting excellence For the sporting élite at the University (and in the country as a whole) the Sports Centre will provide the facilities they need to be able to compete at county, national and international level. A world-class training centre supported by professional staff and a team of sports scientists will mean Cambridge can play an important part in nurturing the sports stars of the future. What next? £50 million needs to be found. This represents a major fundraising exercise which is being considered as one of the potential candidates for the University’s forthcoming 800th anniversary appeal. A committee chaired by Sir Geoffrey Cass has been established to raise the profile of the project within the University and to canvass support for it from alumni and supporters of the University. TALENTED ATHLETE SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME Ever heard of Chris Greensides? How about Mary Cohen or Samantha Cutts? There's little reason you should have, but in a few years (six to be precise), their names may well grace the front pages of our National Broadsheets as heroes of the London Olympics. They are just three of the nine sportsmen and women at Cambridge awarded places on the much prized ‘Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme’, or TASS as it is better known, a government funded initiative which aims to bridge the gaping hole in funding for elite athletes while they are students. The programme represents a unique partnership between sport and higher and further education. Bursaries and scholarships are awarded to athletes committed to combining their sport and education. It aims to reduce the drop-out rate of talented athletes from sport by supporting and developing the talent of today for the sporting success of tomorrow. Each athlete receives £3000 worth of services sourced through the University to help cover the cost of coaching, training and competition expenses, sports science support, medical insurance, and treatment and lifestyle support. The list of achievements to date by TASS athletes at Cambridge is truly impressive. The majority have represented either England or Great Britain in their chosen sport, and some have already had considerable success at International level. TASS graduates Rachel Howe and Gemma Farrell are now training full-time with the British sailing team and Olympic development squad. Their primary goal is to win Gold at the 2012 Olympics. Karen Pearce, Assistant Director of Physical Education and manager of the scheme in Cambridge, stresses that the main goal of TASS is “to give athletes the chance to go to University, whilst not jeopardising their sporting chances by doing so. Maintaining their dual lives is a constant struggle, requiring them to be very determined and focused.” The material benefits of TASS are one of its greatest strengths, the aim being that financial concerns won't impede athletes' progress. Mary Cohen, a fencer with a British ranking of 6th in 2005, emphasised how the money helps reduce a significant amount of stress for student athletes. The money also helps provide kit: Bethan Carden, a sailor who has just been selected for the Southern Volvo Keelboat Squad, has benefited from top of the range kit which will enable her to keep warm whilst sailing offshore. She is also able to attend events without the need to have time out of sailing to earn the money back. Other benefits of the scheme are less tangible but just as important such as the provision of mentoring for each chosen athlete and the peer support from other TASS athletes. The 2012 Olympics is a goal spurring on the athletes under the scheme. Although the future of TASS is ultimately in the hands of the Government, with the continued support of the scheme, there is no knowing the heights of achievement student athletes at Cambridge could reach.
