interviewBringing la dolce vita to RussiaMr. Armando Cafiero, General Director of Confindustria Ceramica, shares hisopinion of the Russian market with CERSANEX MagazineHow does Confindustria Ceramica supportItalian companies in Russia?Russia is a very important market for the Italianceramics sector. In this period we are experiencing adifficult time in the internal market, so we are lookingever more at every possibility for exporting. Our companiesreact very well to opportunities in the exportmarket and definitely Russia, in this sense, is one ofthe most interesting markets for our exports at thistime, and the interest is definitely growing. The growth of Italian exports to Russia in the first semesterof this year is in double figures, so it is veryimportant that the association works closely with ourmember companies in our efforts to ensure growth.<strong>MosBuild</strong> is certainly the most important trade showin the Russian market and we have been constantlyfollowing our companies and creating a commonstructure inside the trade show to allow them tohave a reference point, which is highly appreciated. Infact, at the last edition of <strong>MosBuild</strong> we were invitedby our members to increase our investment, which iswhat we did, giving more attention to the design ofour stand and improving the services that we offer toour members. The association also assists with collateral events, such as workshops and seminars, which are an importantaspect of our activity. It is very important forus that the Italian Trade Commission is undergoing asubstantial process of restructuring. We are confidentthat it is going in the right direction and we expectthat, as happened in the past, it will support our initiativesin the main markets for our exports, and Russiais definitely one of those. What kind of products are most in demand inRussia?I would say top-of-the-range products. The Russianmarket is a very demanding market, so the challengefor our companies is to provide the best of their series- which in many cases are provided specificallyfor this market - the products with the highest addedvalue, to demanding customers, and they are pursuingthis challenge with success. What is the perception of the Russian marketamong Italian ceramic tile manufacturers? Our view of the Russian market is that it is a growingmarket, a market where the characteristics of ‘Madein Italy’ – continuous innovation, attention to style, products which somehow incorporate the Italian wayof life – are highly appreciated by customers. Thereis also an important segment of the Russian marketthat views Italian products as luxury products. But Ithink, in addition to this, there are Russian customerswho see Italian products as incorporating Italian style, the Italian way of life, which is not necessarily aboutluxury, but more about good taste.Which I suppose extends from cooking to fashionand even to ceramics…Exactly. Cooking is one important part and also anappreciation of good wine.So do you think it is all of these componentsthat make Italian ceramic manufacturing unique?Yes, this is true when we are talking about exports. Butwe also have some other companies that have investedin the Russian market as a producer and have anextremely well-established and recognised operationthere. I think that they transmit to Russian customersthe same sense of style, but also attention to the clientin terms of services – and it is that combination whichmakes Italian products successful in the market.Does the association view <strong>MosBuild</strong> as a platformfor Italian companies to enter the Russian market?Absolutely, we have been in partnership with <strong>MosBuild</strong>for many years. It has been a partnership full of dialogue,in the sense that we have always tried tostimulate growth in the service that exhibitors receive.Continuous improvement is what we expect from our<strong>MosBuild</strong> partners and this is what we are receiving.6

interviewFaro collectionAlberto Magrans: Russia becoming a top priorityCERSANEX Magazine exclusive interview with Alberto Magrans Roca GroupSenior Managing Director, Central and North Europe Division8How important is the Russian and CIS marketfor Roca? For the Roca brand, Russia is becoming one ofthe top priorities, because obviously it is growing veryquickly, while other markets in Europe, which weretraditionally important markets, are either stagnatingor in crisis. In Russia, however, with the Roca brand,we are seeing very positive development. We keepgrowing as a result of the investment we made manyyears ago, but also because of our willingness tomaintain this level of investment and because we areprobably the most important international brand withlocal presence in Russia. We are a big family in Russia:more than 2500 employees and seven factories. Thisgives us a lot of muscle to develop our product positionsin the market.

interviewWhat percentage of your products is produced inRussia? It varies by brand. There are local brands likeAquaton, Santeri and Santek, which are 100% producedin Russia. Then, for instance, there is Laufen, which is all imported to Russia. It is all made inSwitzerland or Austria. For the Roca brand, we areprobably now at about 40% production in Russia and60% imported, mainly because of the cast iron andsteel bath tubs that are produced in Spain. The volumeof products produced in Russia is continuallyincreasing, because we keep investing in expandingour factories and in adding additional products, like the faucet assembly lines and the acquisition ofAquaton one year ago.How do Russian and European consumers differ?Do you manufacture any products specifically forRussia?Yes, we are now creating more and more productlines especially for the Russian market, because werecognise that the tastes of Russian consumers arerelatively different and, in some cases, very differentfrom other European markets. Our strength as abig group is in being able to customise, to adapt theglobal trends in design to local needs. What is Russian taste? In bathrooms it is quite different in the sense that thedesigns are much less minimalistic than in some countriesin Europe. And then the colours are different.Russian customers really appreciate variety in the choiceof colours, while in other European countries peoplejust want white. When you go into the details, you realiseit is much more than you would have expected. What products are most in demand in Russia? There is a lot of demand for the high-end ranges. Our Armani range, of course, is a niche product,so the numbers are not very big, but the interestgenerated is very strong and turnover is also good. Then, for instance, with Laufen, we’ve had phenomenalsuccess in the most expensive ranges – Il BagnoAlessi and Palomba Collection are the bestsellers inRussia. So this proves that when you have a reallystate-of-the-art product it needs to be at a reasonablyhigh price, and there is a very interesting marketin Russia for such products. In general, in Russia wesee a greater appreciation of the unusual and a willingnessto spend slightly more money on a bathroom. What new products are you presenting for2012-2013?We roll out all the new launches at <strong>MosBuild</strong>,which is becoming a very important fair, not onlyfor the Russian market, but also for the whole region. We are dedicating big resources to <strong>MosBuild</strong>and we are preparing important new productsacross all the brands present in Russia, which willbe presented at <strong>MosBuild</strong> for the internationalsand locals. Our Russian colleagues will present thePalomba Collection by Laufen at <strong>MosBuild</strong> 2013, togetherwith additions to existing collections. For Roca, we will present products focused in themid-segment that are well adjusted to Russian tastes. Our colleagues in the design department - we haveseveral design departments throughout the world -are increasingly integrating product briefings from thelocal team. As I have said, Russia is becoming moreand more important, so this means right from thebeginning Russian requirements are already integratedinto the finished product. So for Roca there will beimportant new products, completely new collections,in the mid-segment.As for Laufen, we will launch important new ranges, with an innovative, patented ceramic material developedby us. This is exclusive because it has beendeveloped internally, together with German universities. The material will allow us to produce pieces thatare up to 40% lighter, and it will also allow more extremedesigns and shapes, imitating materials likemetal. We are trying to bring a completely new lookto sanitary ware. How do your collaborations begin with leadingdesigners? Our desire is to always work with top internationaldesigners. We cooperate with very well-knowndesigners who we normally use for each collection.Sometimes we repeat and sometimes it is just oneproject, simply because we are constantly looking fornew ideas and this means there is a lot of rotation inthe designers we use. There are many famous namesbehind our designs, like David Chipperfield, StefanoGiovannoni, Andreas Dimitriadis and many more.Do you plan to present the Roca Armani collectionat <strong>MosBuild</strong>?Yes, it was already launched at <strong>MosBuild</strong> and the reactionwas very positive. We are making an impact on thisniche. The idea behind the Armani collection was to tryto create a very high-end range using the designs andconcepts of Mr Armani and the technology and capabilityin ceramics, in fact in all products, of Roca. What results do you hope to achieve by participatingin exhibitions?Exhibitions are a very important vehicle for maintainingcontact with existing customers, making contactwith new customers in new territories, and for explainingnew products to people. As for <strong>MosBuild</strong>, we are impressed with the evolutionof the show in recent years, because it keeps upgradingthe level and I think the organisational teamis doing a fantastic job in improving the show. OurRussian customers appreciate it being there, as Russiais such a big country it is good for them to be able togo to one place, spend a few days there and see allthe companies. That is why we are deploying big resourcesin <strong>MosBuild</strong> for all our brands, because it isbecoming a very important event for us.9

interviewGiven this, is the creation of a collectionbased on research or is it all pureinspiration?Of course, there are some tasks that are set bythe commercial department. For example, thisyear we were tasked with making import substitutionproducts. I have been participating in thisexhibition for fifteenth years, and I, and all myacquaintances who have worked in this marketall this time, have observed that Russian factorieshave grown so strong that it is not immediatelyobvious what stand you are at – an Italianor a Russian stand. The main difference is theprice: the price of equivalent products from Italyor Spain can be five times higher than Russianproducts. This has led to our dealers starting toask us to do import substitution – this is nowa popular term in the Russian ceramics market. What does this mean? For example, say a certaincollection sells at five thousand rubles persquare metre and the inserts for it at six thousand.Dealers are asking us to make the sameproduct, but for five to six hundred rubles. Wetake this on and it is now very important. Butthere are also collections created through inspiration. In the end, all of this goes into theconcept of the collection, which will be adaptedto the Russian market. Adaptation is always necessary, because it often happens that an Italiancollection won’t suit our country. Of course, wedo custom orders from stone and tile, pickingthe material and even the colour specifically forthe customer, but the main products of our factoriesare produced in the thousands of metresand this affects the design. That’s what I like about our market, the diversity. For example, there are some standardEuropean perceptions of what is good and whatis bad. And in Russia? There’s Moscow where itis all mixed – glossy tiles and matt tiles – andthere is St. Petersburg, the North Caucasus, Kazanand so on. I really like this diversity. It allowsus to produce a diverse range of products. It isa unique space for creativity. But the most difficultthing of all is choosing a tile for yourself! Are you preparing something especially forthe <strong>MosBuild</strong> exhibition? All the collections that we present on our standat the exhibition at the beginning of the seasonare made especially for this time. Today, youcan see here all the new collections of ceramictiles from Sokol, Eurostone agglomerative tilesbased on quartz and products made of naturalstone. It is important to note that these are notprototypes. All these tiles are already in warehouses, ready for transportation. We approachthe <strong>MosBuild</strong> exhibition in the following way:we present only what the dealer, if he likes thecollection, can order straightaway and not waitseveral months for while we start producing it,after having examined the demand for the newcollection. True, we do not produce huge volumesimmediately. Invariably, a collection will bescrapped. But, as soon as we have the volumes,we are able to meet the initial interest of dealersand customers. We look forward to seeing what Sokol willsurprise us with at <strong>MosBuild</strong> 2013.11

Inside it has the usual wooden walls, simplefurniture, animal hides and other trophies, butbehind one door is a floor of Mexican coquina,Moroccan tiles flooded with light from brasschandeliers, and the sound of a waterfall: a spahouse! The hunting lodge project was createdby the architect Slava Valoven and the interiorartist Olga Tretyakova. There are three houses on the site: the mainhouse, guest house and spa house, which hasa swimming pool, hammam, Russian bath anda relaxation area. The building fits harmoniouslyinto the landscape: going in you enter theguest area which comprises a lounge, billiardroom and a kitchenette. The interior is decorated with a combinationof ceramic mosaic tiles, metal (usually brass),carved wood, stained glass and authentic accessories– the designers have not missed asingle component of Moroccan style. The central ornament of the billiard room is theunusual replica antique billiard table, which iscovered with a red cloth. Most of the interior items were brought directlyfrom Morocco: carved products from Lebanesecedar, embossed trays, brass door handles, delicatemetal lamps, Berber rugs — everythingbreathes the heat of the Marrakech desert.mansionSitting in the lounge you can comfortably observethe blue water below. A fifteen metrelong swimming pool with waterfall, hydro massageand counter flow is located on the levelbelow in a spacious area. The floor in theswimming pool hall is laid with Mexican coquina, one of the few stones that have theproperty of water absorption and thus preventslipping. The ancient tiles used in the interiorof the spa house store the prints of prehistoriclife. A particularly complex and valuableelement of the décor is the grill that bordersthe pool and is made from the same coquinastone. In addition to its aesthetic function,15

it has a purely practical one: water from thepool, which is flush with the floor, goes intothe grill instead of spilling over onto the floor. The swimming pool is as close as possible to nature:by opening the hall’s doors you access theoutdoor terrace. But the most unusual interioritem is, of course, the see-through fireplace! You can open the doors, light the fire andlisten to the waterfall while enjoying thewarmth of natural stone – all four elementsare at your service!Through the see-through fireplace you can seethe Eastern style interior of the hammam. Thewalls and floor of the Turkish bath are linedmansionwith Eastern patterns, and light comes froma round window with colourful tiles. The steam room has the traditional vaulted ceiling,so that condensate cannot drip, but insteadgently trickles down and exits through thedrainage system. By the walls are heated marblebenches, along with a sink with cold water. In the hammam the procedure is gentle: 30-55degrees in the steam room and then washing. In the spa house’s Russian bath a wood-burningstove heats the room up to a much highertemperature, and the interior made from naturallogs, which is typical for Russia.17

Theicy plunge pool sits harmoniously alongside theTurkish steam bath, as does the golden mosaicon the floor with the Berber rugs. Through theproject, a part of the distant African country ofMorocco has settled in a Russian blockhouse.19

hand-madeAesthetics in stoneStone is, perhaps, synonymous withlongevity. It is not without reasonthat it has been used since the dawnof time to depict great events and toconstruct grand buildings, which westill admire even now. Today, whenwe speak about aesthetics out oftime, we again turn to natural stone, since there is such a range to choosefrom, and our ability to give this hardmaterial an elegant shape has beenenhanced by modern technology.Among the Russian companies ready to immortalise your house in marble or granite isDomoff Group. The company produces decorative facade elements, fences and columnswith decorative carvings, repeating the art of the old masters. The precise detailing of thesmallest pieces gives the products special appeal. Among the products of Domoff Groupthere are also elements of interior decoration in the tradition of aristocratic homes. Stairs, carved countertops, panels and fireplaces, inlaid floors, bathroom decoration - all this is doneon a custom order basis from marble, granite or travertine.22

hand-madeCeramics as artIn search of inspiration for their ceramics, thedesigners from Tagina turned their attentionto the distant past, to ancient times. Ancientartistic and manufacturing techniques are reflectedin each of the Tagina collections. The entire mural is done by hand: from therefined techniques of wall painting with encausticpaints to the grotesque painting ofthe Renaissance era, from colour mosaics tocharming frescoes. All of these ancient traditionsare combined with ancient technologyin the laboratories of Tagina, where the designersconstantly experiment, trying to bringto modern manufacturing the ancient techniquesof ceramic production. Many of theproducts made by hand are unique. Somepatterns are unrepeatable. The use of ancientproduction techniques gives Tagina’sproducts a unique value in the world ofmodern stamped ceramics.23

designersFreedom of expressionaccording to Ross LovegroveFreedom is what we are all lookingfor but do not have enough of. We areprepared to fly to the ends of the earthin search of freedom, but who wouldhave thought that it could be found soclose - in the bathroomUnder the brand of the Turkish companyVitrA, the famous Welsh industrialdesigner Ross Lovegrove has createdFreedom, a unique collection of sanitary warefor bathrooms.’The bathroom is not a place of basic necessitiesbut a sacred oasis where you can recuperateafter the chaos of the outside world,‘ saysthe designer, ’where well-being returns fromcontemplation of fluid biomorphic forms andfrom a feeling of initiation to the world of highart, the world of the artist, and where materialsand technology have combined to becomefunctional and affordable works of art.‘Indeed, the asymmetrical ceramic products byno means resemble bidets, sinks and toilets. They are more like sculptures. To create this collection, consisting of fiveitems, the designer took five years. However, itwas time well spent.Freedom is Ross Lovegrove’s third collection forVitrA. The first was the Istanbul collection, forwhich the designer was inspired by the Turkishcapital, located at the crossroads of Easternand Western civilisation. Ross then created theminimalist MOD collection - not just minimalistby design, but also by essence. Working on thiscollection, Lovegrove studied technologies thatallowed water consumption to be saved andcosts to be reduced for production of the sanitaryware. In the end, having reduced the firingtime for the ceramics, he significantly loweredits cost on the shelves.30

designersRoss Lovegrove, holder of a Master’s degreefrom London’s Royal College of Art, beganhis career working in studios in Stuttgart andLondon specialising in industrial design. Havingbecome a member of the Atelier de Nîmes, headvised companies such as Dupont, Cachareland Hermes. In 1986 Ross returned to London, where four years later he opened his own office, naming his company Studio X.In 2005, Ross Lovegrove won the prestigiousred dot design award for a series of productsdeveloped for VitrA.Ross Lovegrove’s clients include companiessuch as Moroso, Kartell, Driade, Cappellini,British Airways, Philips, Apple, Luceplan, TAGHeuer, Herman Miller, Knoll International, LouisVuitton, Ceccotti, Toyo Ito Architects and Sony. His work has been displayed in famous museumsaround the world: the Museum of ModernArt (New York), the Guggenheim Museum(New York), the Axis Centre (Japan), CentrePompidou (Paris) and Design Museum London. Many of Lovegrove’s works are still awaitingthe moment at which technological progresswill allow them to be put into practice. Amongthese projects is a 60-metre futuristic solarpoweredyacht.31

designersWater Jewels collectionby architect Matteo ThunOne of the most striking exhibits atVitrA’s stand at <strong>MosBuild</strong> 2012 was aseries of decorative, and at the sametime very practical, basins from the WaterJewels collection designed by the Italian architectMatteo Thun. In 2012, the series wascomplemented with models of unusual shapes, sizes and colours. The basins in platinum, goldand copper colour are available in versions withpearl patterns painted on the inside, which developsthe theme of the Vogue wall tiles byVitrA. The new two-colour models bring afresh touch to the bathroom. The Water Jewels basins go perfectly withthe new Gala Classic furniture collection fromVitrA, which is characterised by attention todetail. The CUNA bathtub is attractive as well ascomfortable: the backrest can be tilted, and the depthand shape take into account human physiology. Thebathtub allows you to fully relax after the working day.designersThe flagship of the Antonio Lupi brand in recent yearshas been another development by Carlo Colombo: theMATERIA collection of sanitary ware, furniture and accessoriesfor the bathroom in a variety of shapes andsizes. The collection includes freestanding and built-incountertop washbasins, bathtubs, bidets and toilets, wallcabinets, taps, mirrors and lights. With the MATERIA collection, the designer, of course, focused on materials: stone, glass, wood and stainlesssteel. Simplicity of form is predominant in all the products, and the technical details are carefully hidden. For Teuco, Carlo Colombo created Milestone, a luxurywash basin from marble. The sink has an original, simpleand elegant design. The flat basin shape, long lineardrain, smooth corners and, of course, the texture of thenatural stone once again demonstrate the unique styleof Mr Colombo.35

trendsMimicryPeople throughout history have found inspiration in the world around them, fromflora and fauna. A helicopter resembles a dragonfly, a train a caterpillar and a planea bird; the creation of sonar was inspired by bats and a submarine resembles apredatory fish. In interior design everything is subject to the same laws of nature.Recently, designers have begun to increasingly draw inspiration from naturalmimicry. To replacethe familiar metal grates which concealthe drain system, ACO Haustechnik is offeringcovers made from safe and reliable colouredglass. The covers fit seamlessly into the interiorand are an eye-catching detail.Originally, the word ‘hi-tech’ was applied to anything associated with hightechnology. Gradually, though, high technology has entered our daily lives andbecome such much a part of them that we don’t even notice how we speak, see, work, play and even sleep using hi-tech products. But the word ‘hi-tech’ hasremained and moved more into design. Any technological design is called hi-tech,from interiors to architecture, even though the functionality of these hi-tech itemsis often quite primitive. The main thing is the hi-tech style. Recently, though, theoriginal meaning of the word ‘hi-tech’ has begun to return. Now, if a tile is describedas hi-tech, it either has a built-in microchip and the ability to adjust the level ofhumidity in a bathroom, or some other hi-tech feature3D wall tiles from LitheaWith the new stone working technologiesutilised at Lithea, the designer Fabio Faziohas created original tiles made of naturalstone: the Curve, Dune and Petali collections. The 3D wall tiles from Lithea have a strikingappearance. дизайн-проект design projectAnna Erman60

design projectBathroom by Anna Erman:irony in the interiorIn the mornings, after we are wokenby our alarm clocks, most of us headstraight to the shower. The door to thebathroom is, perhaps, the first that weopen in the mornings. In the bathroomare the usual mirror, tap, toothbrush andset of items that are familiar to everyone. Many people want to transform theirbathroom into a fully-fledged room, tomake it individual, and some refurbish itto an elite levelThe well-known designer Anna Ermanknows what to begin with when decoratinga bathroom. The first thing to do is to determine the sizeof the future home spa. What can you afford:a small shower cabin or something larger?61

design projectBut the most important thing is to make surethat the room has a window to allow in light.Unfortunately, windows are increasingly absentin bathrooms. In Moscow, with the gravitationto global trends, the approach to bathroomdesign is not so different from the Soviet era –dark and cramped. The absence of daylight hasan impact on the perception of the interior and,of course, on the design of artificial lighting.Another important point: pipes, plumbing fittings, radiators and other such items need tobe concealed! Furniture, mirrors and picturestake on the function of a screen: no one willguess what is sometimes hidden behind them.Indeed, pictures are often present in bathrooms, because today in many homes peoplenot only try to make their own bathroom aspleasant and comfortable as possible; they alsoprovide a separate bathroom for guests. This isnot so much a functional room as a ‘portrait’of the financial status of the homeowner, so adesigner’s creative ideas are quite appropriatehere. Luxurious chandeliers, exclusive sanitaryware, pedestal sinks and mosaic panels havebegun to appear in bathrooms.62

design projectMosaic tiles. Anna Erman prefers to use tiles tocreate pictures and avoids their traditional use forcovering walls. In modern building, sealant is appliedto the joints, but sealant is a very short-lived material.Within half a year to a year, the lines betweenthe tiles begin to darken, spoiling the whole appearance. The same approach is used for the positioningof the sanitary ware: the sink and bath are generallyfreestanding, so that they do not need fixing to awall with sealant. But, of course, the mosaic tiles arethe most decorative feature of the walls and floor. An interesting and elegant guest bathroom can beachieved if you allow a touch of irony; for example,a tap in the form of a pipe coming from the ceiling. The main ‘joke’ is understanding how it turns on –it is far from obvious.63

design projectGenerally, when there is the correct architecturalvolume it does not additional decoration; minimalismlooks far more effective in this interior.Anna Erman’s approach to the colour schemeis often purely practical: if a room will be regularlycleaned you can afford to use the lightesttones up to white, but if you want to avoidcleaning the room too frequently it is better touse darker colours. The crucial moment in creating a bathroom interioris choosing the sanitary ware. This isdetermined, above all, by pricing policy. Oncethis is decided, you can choose a bathtub, sinkand other items for style and functionality. But even in a bathroom with a windowartificial lighting is necessary. Anna Ehrmanuses the traditional functional approach: thereshould be general lighting and zonal lightingin certain areas – for example, by the mirrors, sink and bathtub. In Anna’s opinion, standard lamps look especiallyattractive in the bathroom, as they don’t giveout a lot of light, but they decorate the interior.Soap, towels, toothbrushes and the other smallaccessories, without which a bathroom is incomplete, are also part of the interior. AnnaErman thinks in advance about their design andlocation – nothing should appear out of place. All this is not just a whim. In a modern homethe bathroom should not only carry out itsprimary function; it should also provide an opportunityto relax and unwind from the mentalfatigue of a hard day.Affluent people strive to turn their bathrooms intoa home spa, and ladies prefer to arrange it aspart of a boudoir. These ideas have long been inthe air and today, finally, they are feasible.64

furnishing projectsWashbasinwith pedestalThe renowned designer KarimRashid has brought a completelydifferent approach to the traditionalelements of bathrooms by Cielo. He has created the Floot washbasinwith pedestal, which, for all its simplicity,is surprisingly elegant.Luxury for thebathroom fromCredit CeramicaThe radiator from the luxuryRomanov collection manufacturedby Hotech is finished in gold leaf. The design was created by MichaelCasassa.
