PRESIDENT’SMESSAGERICHARD KRACKOWAHSA PresidentGreetings from Chilly Wisconsin:Summer is over!! Darn!! I was complaininga bit about the heat, but we went fromshorts to long johns over night. However, it is beautiful weather forthe sheep. Hope all of you, or y’all as Carrie would put it, are gettingyour ewes bred for early lambs.Well... this is it, the last President’s Message that I get to write. Maybea blessing for all of you, but I have enjoyed it and hope you have too.Several of you have commented that you have enjoyed reading mymessages - thank you for that! I think our association has becomestronger over the nine years that I have been on the board. We aredoing more work in the office, expanded our staff and equipment, and still looking to better the bottom line. I realize we cannot makeeveryone happy, but I have owned my own business for 37 years andknow that is impossible. I also have seen changes in our Hampshiresas a breed and our promotional programs. We have gained momentumin a tough agricultural climate which is not easy to do these days, but it all boils down to our breeders doing a great job and workingTOGETHER. Thank you for that!At Louisville, there will be the annual meeting and a changing of theguard. We have a number of great candidates for board positions, which is really encouraging. Around here it is hard to talk peopleinto running for the Co-op boards, as I have been on the nominatingcommittees, and it has not been an easy task. I am pleased toleave it in good hands. I hope all of you, regardless of what breedyou raise, keep promoting the business and telling our non-farmfriends what we are doing. Some PR goes a long way, so that thesheep industry can continue to thrive and we can continue to raise thebreed of our choice.I will continue to see you at the shows and sales, I am just not readyto give that up yet. Keep promoting and raising good Hampshires! As Bob Hope used to say... “Thanks for the memories”!Your PresidentRichard KrackowAMPSHIREHEARTBEATCalendar of Events...Market Lamb Mamma Sale • Louisville, KYNovember 9th • Friday • 7:00pmStars of Louisville Hampshire Sale • Louisville, KYNovember 10th • Saturday • 2:00pmNational Junior Hampshire Show • Louisville, KYNovember 11th • SundayAnnual AHSA Membership Meeting • Louisville, KYNovember 12th • MondayNational Hampshire Show • Louisville, KYNovember 13th • Tuesday • 8:00amMARKET LAMBMAMMA SALEFriday, November 9th at 7:00pmNorth American Livestock Expo.HAMPSHIRESSUFFOLKS • SOUTHDOWNS • MONTADALESDORSETS • WETHER DAMSfor a catalog contact Sale Managers:Millie Moore or Karey Claghorn(701) 297-9199 or montadale@earthlink.netto view catalog visit: www.sheepsales.comNorth AmericanHampshire SaleSTARS OF LOUISVILLE HAMPSHIRE SALESaturday, November 10th at 2:00pmYearling Ewes • Senior Ewe Lambs • Januray Ewe LambsFebruary Ewe Lambs • March Ewe Lambssee the catalog on page 21-23 of this issuePAGE 4 - Fall 2007

FOR YOURINFORMATIONOhio Hampshire Hall of Fame EstablishedThe Ohio Hampshire Sheep Association has established a Hampshirehall of fame. The Ohio members are recognizing individuals, businesses, and supporters who have helped mold the Hampshiresheep breed in Ohio. The idea was developed and introduced to themembers by Dan Shell, Ohio Hampshire Sheep Association President. The members accepted the idea and the first class was inducted into thehall of fame at the recent Ohio State Fair. The inductees are nominatedby members of the association at the spring annual meeting eachyear and selected from those nominations by the board of directors. The new inductees will be announced each year at the annual OhioShowcase Sale in May and then inducted and recognized at the OhioState Fair Hampshire sheep show. The inaugural class that was inductedin August includes: Don Brandt of Anna, Ohio; the lateClarence Williamson of Xenia, Ohio; Dan and Linda Schlichter ofWashington C.H., Ohio. These inductees have been very influential inthe success of Hampshire sheep in Ohio and the promotion of ourbreed. Their success as breeders have influenced many to start Hampshireflocks and made an impact in the Ohio Hampshire Sheep Associationas well as nationally. A plaque will be placed in the Mid StatesWool Growers display area commemorating the names of hall of fameinductees. We congratulate each of them and their families on thishonor and induction.AMPSHIREHEARTBEATRichard’s Trip to the Oregon State FairI would like to give you an update on my trip to the OregonState Fair for the Western Regional show.I had to get up at 2:15AM to catch a 5AM flight out of LaCrosse. Needless to say, I am not an early riser... so that crimped mystyle. I met a couple of other old codger sheep guys (Iowegian’s) inthe Minneapolis airport and we all flew out to Boise, Idaho on Fridayto attend the Erdstrom dispersal on Saturday. This was a largegroup of very useful sheep. They are raised on range conditions, which makes me think we baby our sheep way too much.It was interesting flying in over the mountains to see no trees, but then a valley with irrigation systems and green circles, but they are100 plus miles from no where!!Getting into Boise was good. Our driver got lost, but eventuallywe got out to the fairgrounds where the sheep sale was. I am notused to seeing horse pastures with sprinklers in to keep the grassgreen and lush. Talking to people out there, I learned about waterdistricts and their usage which was quite interesting. After the sale, Rob Duncan was gracious enough to give me aride across the high desert to Salem, Oregon. Quite an experience! No trees, just sagebrush... not even road kill!! Then we drove by anirrigation unit in the middle of desert country with beautiful alfalfa.Sagebrush on one side of the road and great crops on the other. Wehave in no way reached our potential! Just think of how many morepeople we could feed world wide, why not bargain some of this forfuel?I was in Salem nine years ago, when I first got elected to theboard, and was happy my fellow board members let me go back mylast year on the board. THANKS GUYS!The State Fair is beautiful; although they were updating the facilityand grounds. Very casual, not the elbow to elbow people likein the Midwest. I got to MC the show and of course had a blast onthe mike. The people who organized the show did an awesome joband were great hosts. They had beautiful extra prizes for all. Thanksto all of you for making my stay so awesome! The quality in both the junior and open show was very good, perhaps smaller in numbers, but quality was just as good as any otherState Fair I have been to.Continued on Page 8...Presenting...“Humble”Champion RamIllinois State FairReserve Champion RamIndiana State FairWe raise Bucks and Boys...both areChampionsWe are AI’ing 25 ewes to “Proof ”on September 24th...Watch for his progeny this spring!Richard Crome4881 West State Street • Charleston, IL 61920Cell: 217/549-2534 • Home: 217/345-3437PAGE 6 - Fall 2007

F.Y.I. CONTINUEDContinued from Page 6...I got to meet a lot of people... not only sheep people, but alsoothers visiting the fair. I tried to explain what the judge was lookingfor in his selection, and the spectators really liked that. I got to meetMrs. Forster. The sheep barn is named after her late husband. Sheis still promoting the livestock business at 85 years young! After the show, I just hung out in the barn and visited with thegreat people from Oregon. They are really a lot more laid back thanin the Midwest. It was a nice change of pace.Monday I did the Commercial tour at the fair. It was interestingto see those exhibits, which were very similar to other State Fairs.Late morning was on the shuttle to Portland and then the flight home.We are trying to get more interest in sheep in the Western US,but I cannot help thinking as a RE professional at the price of landout there. A person just cannot put livestock on $60-$80 thousandper acre land! Any ideas people? We’d like to get more kids involved, however in talking to Ag instructors in schools, most of their studentsare city kids, even here in my area. If you have any ideas, letany of us know what you think we can do. I started helping at homeas soon as I could carry bottles to lambs and throw hay to the ewes.I started going to shows and sales as soon as they would let me goalong, and this was, of course, one main reason I stayed interested.I could see the friendships that they had developed and got to meetall these "sheep buddies" that they talked about at home. After 30some years of involvement like this, I have many of my own sheepbuddies, and anticipate the shows, sales, and occasions where sheepfolk gather.I attended college at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul.Upon graduation, I worked for Harvest States Cooperative for twoyears. We then moved to Pipestone and I started work at PipestoneGrain Co. I now have been there in partnership with my parents foralmost 14 years. Primarily, we do custom feed formulating and manufacturingfor sheep, beef, dairy, and hogs. We also sell seed, fertilizer, and chemicals, and offer many services to our customers.I have been married to my wife Shelly for 15 years. Together, weare raising four sons; Brady, 10 yrs, Mitch, 8 yrs, Sam, 6 yrs, and Nate,4 yrs. We live on acreage outside of Pipestone and care for some ofour family's Hampshires and also a few registered Holstein calvesfrom Shelly's dad. Like everyone, we are busy with our kid's activitiesincluding school, sports, church, and 4-H.I am interested in a board of director position because I wouldlike to learn much more about the association and it’s workings. I believethat with my business background and education, I can offerthe board sound judgment and open mindedness in all board discussionsand decisions. Being the owner and manager of my ownbusiness allows me to contribute a decision-making and "full circle"thought process.Thank you for your consideration of this board position. Eachmember needs to thoughtfully choose their vote. Hampshires arecertainly the breed that's "got it goin' on"! We all need to work hardto preserve what we have, and keep it rolling.District 4 Director CandidateWayne Fuller, South DakotaMy name is Wayne Fuller and I have been married to my wife,Linda, for 35 years. CANDIDATE BIOS...AMPSHIREHEARTBEATthe Canadian border to the American Royal in Kansas City. Oh, yes, also in Louisville, Kentucky. As a youth, I was active in 4-H as a member and as an adult, Iwas active as a 4-H leader. Our family has been active in FFA as bothmyself and my son hold American Farmer Degrees and my fatherheld an Honorary American Farmer Degree.I am still actively showing Hampshire sheep at the local fairs andam avidly working with the Junior Shows as I enjoy helping the youngpeople gain an invaluable experience and learn new things. If I amelected I would like to create experience and learn new things. If Iam elected I would like to create more involvement for the JuniorShows at the grass roots level and I believe in “Don’t blend in…make a difference.”I would appreciate your vote for District 4 director. Thank you!District 4 Director CandidateJake Herrig, MinnesotaHi my name is Jake Herrig and I would like to represent you onthe board of directors of the American Hampshire Sheep Associationin district 4. My father and I started our Hampshire flock in1993 for my 4-H project. We purchased 4 ewe lambs and built fromthere. My sister and I showed sheep through 4-H and FFA. Duringmy senior year in high school I won the Minnesota FFA sheep proficiencyaward.I received a B.S. degree in Ag-business from South Dakota StateUniversity, where I worked at the sheep unit. The summer I workedat the sheep unit I did a research project dealing with shearing lambsand growth differences in sheared and non-sheared lambs. The paperI wrote was published and was in the Hampshire Heartbeat lastspring.I work for Sydell Inc. as a Salesman. We sell sheep and goatequipment. I live in Vermillion, South Dakota where I work. Thesheep are at my parents place in Slayton, Minnesota where my dadtakes care of them on a day-to-day basis and I come home on theweekends. The flock currently consists of 50 registered ewes. Youcan see our flock at the Minnesota State Fair, National Corn BeltSale, Midwest Stud Ram Sale, Ohio Showcase Sale, and the MinnesotaBred Ewe Sale.I have served on the Minnesota Hampshire Board of Directorsfor the past 5 years. I think as an association we need to keep theyouth a top priority or we will have no future. If we all work togetherwe can keep the Hampshire breed on top.I would appreciate your vote for American Hampshire SheepAssociation Board of Directors.District 4 Director CandidateGary Klug, WisconsinI have raised, along with family, registered Hampshires since 1973-numbers of ewes have varied over the years and the last 10 years wehave generally bred about 25 ewes per year-fairly common number forWisconsin farm flock. Highland Hampshires is the farm name-Highlandbeing the name of the road I grew up on. Currently, my sisterCarol and husband, Dale, her daughter Lynn and I share the day today sheep activities, while Lynn and I mostly tend to sales and shows. As many of us know-raising sheep together is a great family activityconnectingthe generations and maintaining family relationships-sometimesdifficult in today's world as we are certainly more mobile andfluid in terms of changing residences and job changes. Sheep keep ourfamily connected. One of the several questions I asked myself, when consideringrunning for the AHSA Board, what would some of the skills be that Icould bring to the Board? Another question was what were my intentionsand or purpose in pursuit of a Board position? I hope I can answerthose questions and, hopefully, provide other pertinentinformation in the next paragraph or two.I have served on several, diverse boards as a volunteer, over theyears. I take my board and volunteer work seriously-whether it be as amember of the county fair board, University of WI-Platteville Boardof directors, Alpha Gamma Rho Alumni House board member or the4-H Leaders-all of which I have served on in various capacities over theyears. I currently serve as the WI Sheep Breeders Cooperative Presidentand a member of the Governor's Blue Ribbon Auction Committee. Iconsider volunteer work a privilege and an honor to serve the organizationsthat have elected me. Board and volunteer work has allowed meand has provided me opportunities to give back to organizations andcommunities-hopefully, providing for future of these groups to behealthy and active. They have also provided me with personal growthopportunities-something I believe ought to be ongoing throughoutlife. These experiences have allowed me to learn interpersonal skills, administrative and organizational procedures and how to focus on thepurpose of the group rather than the personalities of group members. My job as a public servant has also allowed me to learn skill setsthat would serve the AHSA well. I work for the WI Department ofAgriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection as a Circuit Supervisor inthe Meat Bureau. I supervise 9 off-site employees and manage over 80meat establishments. This type of work has honed my organizationaland supervisory abilities. Managing off site employees and being responsibleto 80 plus diverse businesses certainly has allowed me tolearn management, view and process relevant information effectivelyand efficiently and listen and hear well. I enjoying working for the publicand understand my work effects people I will never meet or interactwith. I take the regulatory aspect of my job seriously-guidelinesand regulations were created for reasons-my job isn't to decide whichones I will enforce on any given day. I educate, collaborate, consult andregulate on a daily basis. Board work entails all of this.I, hopefully, have provided information and philosophical nuancesto prove my sincerity to serve as the District 4 AHSA Board member.I will take the position seriously and work to maintain the premiersheep organization is a healthy and respectful manner, promote theHampshire breed and support the people that raise and love them.Fall 2007 - PAGE 15

CANDIDATE BIOS...AMPSHIREHEARTBEATDistrict 8 Director CandidateDavid Lytle, PennsylvaniaI’m interested representing district 8 as your director. Startingas a 4H project, Hampshire sheep have been an important part of mylife for the past 34 years. In the past two years our triplet 4th graders,Justin, Emily and Alyssa, have begun showing Hampshire sheep.Barbara and I believe that farm life is a great way to raise children andhope that our family sheep project teaches our three children someof the important life lessons it taught both of us. The kids have enjoyedthe All-American Junior Show for the past two years and alwayslook forward to this national sheep event and all the fun activities. Ifchosen as your director I look forward to helping the association furtherdevelop important youth activities such as the futurity programand the All-American Junior Show.Although Hampshire sheep are a passion I live for and strive toexcel at, I earn a living working in the feed industry. As the AccountManager for Arm & Hammer Animal Nutrition Eastern Region,I’m involved with the latest scientific developments in ruminant nutritionas well as dealing with the business issues that face the livestockand dairy industry. My travels for Arm & Hammer haveallowed me the luxury of seeing a lot of Hampshire flocks acrossthe country in the past 10 years. We live and raise our Hampshiresin southeastern PA in an area where farmland is rapidly disappearingto housing developments. Between my father’s “u-pick produce”business and my hay ground, we farm about fifty acres in addition tothe sheep operation. We currently have a flock of 27 brood ewes. My ambition is tobreed big sound productive Hampshires that are attractive in theshow ring as well as on pasture. With the kids having an interest inmarket lambs we have recently dabbled a bit with some club lambbreeding. One advantage of a small flock is that I have been ableto utilize several new technologies. We began DNA testing our flockin 1996, our flock was spider gene free but we had a lot of work todo to breed in scrapie resistance. Starting with only one QR ewe in1996, we are proud that all the ewes in the current flock now carrya minimum of one “R” gene. Another technology that we startedin 1996 was artificial insemination; we have artificially bred ewes almostevery year since. AI has allowed me access to some of thebreed’s top proven genetics. Winning a Louisville class in 2000 wasenough to hook me on using AI.If the district 8 members choose me to be their director I willbring a lifetime passion for the Hampshire breed, and a businessprospective to your board. At Large Director CandidateBrad Payne, IllinoisBrad Payne is a breeder from Illinois and is a candidate for theat large director position. At press time, his biography was not availablebut it will be included with the ballot that you receive in the mail.At Large Director CandidateDan Shell, OhioI would like to take the opportunity to run for the at large positionof the American Hampshire Sheep Association Board that willbe vacated by Dan Schlichter. Author of the “Youth Connection” in the HampshireHeartbeat. At Large Director CandidateRoy Waggoner, VirginiaI am writing this letter to allow you to see how deeply I feelabout the purebred sheep business and especially the HampshireBreed. As you read my story you will see that my life has been dedicatedto supporting the youth in our business and promoting theHampshire Breed in every way possible. My career with livestock began when I started high school. Ichose hogs and market lambs as my FFA Projects. That eventuallyled to the purchase of my very first purebred ewe from LunsfordHampshires. My journey through life with purebred Hampshiresheep had begun. After high school, I attended Business School in Staunton,Virginia. Upon graduation, I began working in Franklin, West Virginia,at Hanover Shoe Company in their payroll department. Onenight while depositing my paycheck at the bank I was asked to beginworking with The Blue Grass Valley Bank. I decided to take the positionand was with the bank for over 30 years. CANDIDATE BIOS...AMPSHIREHEARTBEATmaintained my Hampshire Flock and supported any newcomers tothe business. I recently retired and can now work with my sheep ona daily basis.During my working career I continued to show and sell Hampshiresheep all across the Eastern Region of the United States. I alwaystried to get the young people interested in showing sheep, whether it be market lambs or breeding sheep. I would trim foryoungsters at our local fair along with my Dad, who was a sheepshearer professionally. We would instruct the children on propershow techniques, trimming and shearing techniques. I was able to interestmy sister, Judy Hupman, in showing sheep and she did so duringher high school years. In 1989 I married my wife, Judy, who I met in connection withmy job at the bank. She had two children, Kristina and Bryan, andthey began to show interest in the sheep. When they decided theywanted to show the sheep we began to expand our showing season. We traveled to the Mid West, into Ohio and even on to the NAILEin Louisville. Our children loved showing and Bryan eventually becamequite handy at trimming. He continues to assist us at homewhen needed and is able to travel to some shows and help trim andshow the sheep.About seven years ago, my nephew, Michael Hupman, asked meif I could help him with some market lambs for our local fair. I wasdelighted and soon introduced the purebreds to Michael. He beganshowing and working with the sheep on our farm. Michael showedgreat interest in the sheep and started to learn more and more. Henow works with the sheep on a daily basis, does all the farm work pertainingto the sheep, trims and shears, and of course shows his flockat all major sheep shows. It has been a pleasure to watch Michaelgrow and achieve with his flock.Currently, I am assisting two youngsters in our locality. Theyare just beginning their flock and seem to be very interested in all aspectsof the sheep business and learning about the Hampshire Breed.Working with young people and their Hampshire flocks is veryrewarding for me. After all, they are the future of our breeding sheepbusiness. I will always be ready to assist and support any person whostates interest in the Hampshire Flock. I have worked with myHampshire Flock for over 40 years, and strongly believe they offer somuch to prospective breeders. They are great to work with, greatmothers and fast to market. This makes them appeal to both purebredbreeders and market breeders. I chose the Hampshire Breed inhigh school, and not once, in all my years of working with Hamps, have I ever regretted my decision.to stay in touch with theHampshire Breed and Events visitwww.hampshires.comOnline Forms are also available thereAll-American Junior ShowJuly 4th-6th Sedalia, MissouriYou should be there!Fall 2007 - PAGE 17

RECORD KEEPING AND YOUR SHEEP FLOCK?Keeping records on your flock or any enterprise is important tothe success of what you are doing. As an Agriculture Education teacherI teach this each and every day to students. I have seen their own projectsgrow as students become more aware of the records they need tokeep and how they can adapt them to their projects. This is no differencein the sheep business. We must keep good records for our business. Here is a suggestion for some records you should keep on yourflock.Annual Inventory - This is a record of your sheep, equipmentand sometimes grain or feed. This record allows you see where you areat the beginning and the end of each year. This should include any deathor loss records for that year. Many producers also keep a record of thesale of sheep and addresses of those who have purchased them duringthat year as a supplement to this inventory.THE HAMPSHIRESTUFF FOR KIDSBudget – This should be done for the entire year. Budgetingof receipts and expenses allows you to evaluate your enterprise andmake changes early to realize a profit.Record of Receipts and Expenses – This should be keptfrom year to year and is critical for many other financial forms anddecisions. It is the basis for a well managed business. Keep accuraterecords in some type of record keeping system either on paperor in a computer. Records should include the source of the incomeand the purpose for each expense.Production Records – Breeding records, herd health records, lamb mortality rates, performance data, even pedigree informationare all important to making good flock decisions.Keeping flock records is not only good management but mustbe done!EDUCATIONAL ZONE!FEATURE: LINEBREEDING,INBREEDING, CLOSEBREEDING,CROSSBREEDING, & PUREBREEDINGWHAT DO THESE TERMS MEAN?Understanding the terminology used in the livestock businesscan give you a better understanding of the direction of your flock. Some are unacceptable to raising a purebred animal for the protectionof the breed. After exploring this section you will hopefully have abetter understanding of the terminology used by producers in theirbreeding programs.Purebreeding – A purebred animal is defined as a member ofa breed where the animals within that breed possess similar ancestryand distinctive characteristics. This animal can be registered with abreed association or be eligible for registration. Purebred animals areanimals where the entire lineage can be traced back to foundation animalsaccepted by the breed because of the characteristics they possess.Breed associations serve the purebred industry by recording thelineage of the animals, protecting the purity of the breed, and promotingthe interests of the breed and the breeders. One of the keysin the success of purebred animals is selecting for merit. When doneby applying flock records this can be a powerful source for improvingthe breed.Inbreeding – Inbreeding involves the mating of close relatives. This is done by mating a ram and a ewe that have one or more commonancestors. An example of this would be daughter/sire matingsand dam/son matings. Inbreeding increases the number of dominantand recessive genes and can achieve important goals for one generation. In general though it reduces hybrid vigor which in turnresults in lower reproductive performance and lowers fleece weights.Harmful inbreeding for more than one generation should be avoidedif at all possible. Some sheep producers use this on limited basis.Linebreeding – This is a special kind of inbreeding which concentrateson continued matings of decedents of certain animals.Linebreeding is very similar to closebreeding but is different in its intensityof the breeding of closely related animals. In a linebreedingprogram the degree of relationship of the two animalsmated is not any closer than half brother and half sister. Thiscan also include matings more distantly related than the one wejust mentioned. Linebreeding, when practiced, can perpetuatethe good traits of an outstanding ewe or ram. This is accomplishedbecause the offspring are similar in gene makeup andtherefore exhibit a high degree of uniformity and performance.Linebreeding is much safer than that of closebreeding or inbreedingbecause you are less likely to get that breeding programwhere it is either hit the jackpot or sink the ship when the matingtakes place. You can make great progress in a breeding programthrough linebreeding without taking great risks. Small flockowners as well as large flocks can use this type of system both totheir advantage.Closebreeding – This is where you use a minimum numberof different ancestors in the breeding program. It would bethe repeated mating of a brother and his full sister. This is notcommonly used in livestock. It does create lines of animals thatare very uniform in type and other characteristics but in the longrun it enhances the chances of recessive traits showing up andcan reduce size of the animals, fertility, and general vigor. Strictculling practices have to be applied to control the negative effectsof closebreeding.Crossbreeding - This is the mating of two animals fromtwo different breeds. This type of breeding program has noplace when raising registered purebred animals but is very effectivein making progress in a commercial or club lamb program.Hybrid vigor is increased through crossbreeding programs. It islow risk with fast genetic changes.PAGE 24 - Fall 2007

YOUTH CONNECTIONTO LEARN AND DOARE YOU READY FOR LAMBING SEASON?Lambing time is fast approaching for most breeders as we beginthe anticipation of a new lamb crop. Are you ready? Research showsus that an animal loss in sheep production from lambing to weaningof 15 to 20% can be normal but keeping every lamb alive throughweaning is critical. It might be the one that makes a difference in yourflock or the money maker you have been waiting for. Lamb losses canbe affected by weather, management practices, nutrition, housing, andgenetic factors. We can control all of these in some way but can managethe flock to improve in these areas to make lambing a positive experience.Whatever the case, here are some tips to get ready forlambing.First of all the basic needs of the ewe must be met leading intolambing time. The basic needs of feed, water, exercise and shelter arecritical to the success at lambing. If a strong, healthy crop of lambsis to be expected, the ewes must be properly fed. Feeding a suitableand and well balanced ration and supplying the needed minerals andvitamins for the ewe to maintain herself and for the development ofthe fetus is important. Ewes will gain on the average of 20 to 35pounds during the pregnancy period. We want them to enter the nursingtime with some flesh because the lactation requirements are muchmore demanding. Most ewes after becoming pregnant can utilize pasturesfor the first part of gestation. If pastures are not sufficient thengood quality hay can be provided. Ewes during this stage will eataround 4 to 6 lbs of hay per day. It is also critical to continue to provideminerals and vitamins to the ewes. Grains can be supplementedto maintain body condition but be cautious in getting the ewe too fatduring this period. Exercise during this period is important. In the last4 to 5 weeks before lambing, ewes will gain 10 to 20 lbs. of the totalKIDS ZONE!By: DAN SHELLE-mail your comments to shelld@blanchester.k12.oh.usweight they will gain during pregnancy due to the rapidly growingfetus. Demands on the ewe become very high. The ewe’s ration mustnow be higher in energy. This may be done by adding ½ lb. To 1lb.of shelled corn. Ewes during this period usually get anywhere from a½ lb. up to 2lb. of grain per day depending on their body condition. As lambing gets close, ewes should be separated out that will lambfirst and those who will lamb later be fed different. They are at differentstages of their pregnancy and just as we have already mentionedshould be fed accordingly. After you have taken care of the feedingprogram, we can now look at some other factors. Shelter is importantfor the ewes. We all live in many different climates and must use commonsense when evaluating how the climate effects us at lambing time.Basically keep the ewes away from getting wet and chilled and freefrom cold drafts. As lambing time approaches, you will want to movethe ewes inside where they can be free from draft and cold. Manyproducers shear the ewes prior to lambing. In my case it helps withbarn space and they tend to find warmer areas of the barn free fromdraft to lay down and have their lambs. If you cannot shear or theweather in your area combined with the facilities does not allow it thenewes should be crutched and tagged. Shear around the vulva and theudder to help at lambing time. Another key factor is to put a good vaccinationprogram into place. There are many programs out there weall use, so new or young shepherds should ask other producers or theirveterinarians of what program will help in their area they live in. Beproactive so you don’t have to be reactive. Prepare your lambing supplies.Towels, bottles, feeding tubes, medicines, supplements should allbe ready and in the barn. Lambing pens should be set up and the barnprepared. After all this, are you ready? Good luck!EweLambRamWetherFeedHayFlockDockHampshireDOUBLE/DOUBLE WORD SEARCHFind the words on the list in the word search. Some words even appear twice.B M H T L A M B ZT H A Y M A R C KH A M P S H I R EW Y P K B S A D WE V S B T M D O BT D H M F L O C KH E I A Z E C K EE E R L W E K B WR F E E D Z E W EVOCABULARY BUILDERThis issues word:LAMBThis is a noun that means:1) A young sheep either male or female.2) Meat from a sheep under 1 year of age.Usage in a sentence:1) My ewe had a lamb last week.2) I ate lamb for dinner. Can you make your own sentence?________________________________________________________________________________________________Fall 2007 - PAGE 25

CONSISTENCYIN QUALITY CON-SIGNMENTS2007 marks our 10th year marketing Hampshire sheep. It really didn’t seem like tenyears has past until I saw a photo of Ashley and I with our first sale sheep “Alliance”, boyAshley sure has aged. While her enthusiasm about a big sheep sale had diminished some, mine seems to growevery year. We have made numerous acquaintances, many new friends and many more greatmemories. We have sold some great Hampshire sheep in our first ten years, and we are certainlyexpecting to continue. Concentrating more on the ewe families the past few years, has helped usdevelop a tremendous set of females. With the decision by Wheaton Hampshires to part with theirframe sheep, we have agreed to purchase their remaining “Top End” ewes. While it is sad to seea true staple in the Hampshire breed let his frame ewes leave the “estate”, the addition of thesefemales makes our ewe base that much more powerful. Our sincere thanks to everyone who had bid on, or purchased sheep from us in the past,we look forward to continuing our relationships in the future, as well as creating many new ones.Watch for our STARS OF LOUISVILLE sale entry -a March born “Powerbilt” daughter who’s Grand Dam raised “Hemi”, our Champion Ramat the National Hampshire Sale in 2007 purchased by Lytle’s Hampshires. Thanks to Kirlin Hampshires for the use of Kirlin 7-07 ("Powerbilt" x "Taylormade")This "ulta-pretty" PowerBilt son is extremely angular and extended, he's really straight from the top of his shoulders to his dock, and possess a beautiful set of feet and legs as well as great Hampshire type.
