In April, funds were raised for Amphibians(Save the Frogs Day). In May, the groups plan to raise fundsfor Butterfly Conservation. It’s the usual story.“Butterflies, once widespread, have been seriously affected bypollution, habitat destruction, urban developments and intensiveagriculture. Over half our (UK) species have experienced seriousdeclines over the past 50 years and some have become extinct.Butterflies have never needed support more than now. They area true indicator of the health of the countryside and if we canunderstand their problems we can help much other wildlife.”See www.butterfly-conservation.org for more informationSorting rubbish is one of the best things we can do for theenvironment. Making new from old uses fewer resources.(eg. recycling aluminium cans uses up 90% less energy thanmaking new ones) Here are some examples of what can bedone and IVAR guarantees that everything which is broughtto their plant in Forus becomes something new!• Old clothes and textiles - new quilts for emergency•situations.Plastic bottles - fleeces• Paper - all sorts of paper and cardboard products• Juice and Milk Cartons - coloured wrapping paper• Car tyres - new tyres, energy, base for artificial turf• Metal - new bicycles, golf carts, tyre rims, cans, nails etc.etc. etc!IFG and YEPA are planning Bake Sales on Friday, 15th Mayto help raise awareness and funds! 4th grade SWEC membershave brainstormed ideas and when 5th grade SWEC membershave done the same a decision will be made as to what they willdo. Usingrecycled glass saves 90% of the energy needed to makenew glass.• Plastic - chairs can be made from 325 recycled plasticbottle tops. Two kilos of oil is saved for every kilo ofplastic we sort.• Real rubbish - At Forus, enough energy is made fromrubbish to heat 10.000 homes in Stavanger, Sandnes andSola.
