ISS Sports NewsISS NECIS Swim teamWe have great swimmers at ISS.This year we have had 29 NECIS swimmers practicing in Randaberg pool twice a week fromJanuary to April for the meet in Sweden.We all 29 swimmers traveled to the tournament in Sweden. We came back with 1 gold, 16 silverand 17 bronze medals and lots of 4th, 5th & 6th place ribbons. Congratulation to all swimmers.This year we have to say goodbye to Marek Labak, Brent Fredeen, John McQuillan, Chris Gilbertand Blair Robertson. We hope they all continue swimming during their time at the university.We will miss you all.NECIS Coaches: Ms. Cheryl Hogarth, Mr.Taylor Cox and Ms Rianne HettemaWhat a fantastic trip in Sigtuna!We were all very excited for the competition, but also for theflight. The first day, after we arrived, we visited Sigtuna, wentshopping, and ended the day in an Italian restaurant to eatpizza. The second day was a bit more exciting than the first, wewoke up at 6:15 in the morning (not too exciting) and after wehad breakfast we walked over to the pool. We were thrilled toparticipate in such an important event, with many schools torace against. After the warm-up the races started, so the onesthat had the race that was about to start, got prepared.The races went on for the whole day, from about 7:30 or 8:00a.m. until maybe 5:00p.m. We were cheering, some practicingand some of course, racing. At the end of the races, we had someplay-time in the in the fun pool with slides next door. Aftersliding and swimming, we returned to the hotel, had dinner,then… disco night! The next day we woke up as usual, andwalked to the pool again. That day was my busy + lucky day!Many students on the I.S.S team won a ribbon, or even a medal.It was so exciting to end your race and then discover that yougot second place, won a silver medal and got to stand on thepodium, with the other finalists. That day we also had to leave,a bit sad, but then got instantly happy again as we noticed theStockholm duty free.We landed in the Sola airport in Stavanger at about 10:00 p.m.,with chocolate, toblerones, mnms and tired but happy smiles.VirginiaNECIS Swimming – Sweden 2009It was this year, 2009, that I travelled to my second swim meetwith the Viking Swim Team, ISS, to the scenic country ofSweden, Uppsala, where we were welcomed with open arms.Swimming with my friends and NECIS swimmers this year wasa pure joy and I felt that this year especially, our team bondedtogether, eager to meet new people and friends, as well as oldrivals. The team spirit and vibe was amazing and many personalbests were beaten!Our NECIS team returned with many medals and ribbons;one gold, sixteen silver and seventeen bronze medals, as wellas countless ribbons making our trip impressive as well as aspectacular event for us all! This year we had awesome facilities(the pool was huge) with a fantastic atmosphere. Our team notonly consisted of strong individual swimmers, but also of teamplayers who took up a role in bringing each other together and Ibelieve we all did a great job being role models throughout thecompetition. Going down-town and visiting some of the city,cathedral, shopping areas and eating at the pizzaria was also atime to relax and explore Sweden. What I also find remarkableabout these swim-meets is the amount of new people you meetfrom all over the globe, with different cultures, ideas and ageshowever, united under the NECIS sport, with the hope ofachieving and being their very best.I also know that this great swim meet would not have beenpossible without the continual support and help of our greatcoaches, Ms. Hettema, Ms. Hogarth and Mr. Cox as well asall the other fantastic trainers! This must be the besttherapy to all of us.Good news to all parents – the amendment tothe bus contract with Veolia is now signed andthey will supply us with buses with seat beltswhenever they are able to. They have all thetime shown their good willingness to make thetransport as safe as possible. Please help us byreminding your children how important it isthey use them at all times while on the busIllegal parking still is a problem at the schoolarea. Even if we have put up a number of newsigns to show where it is allowed and where it isnot allowed to park, we observe all the time thatthis is ignored. The parking restrictions are toprotect the safety of the students, so we kindlyappeal to you again, please make sure you parkyour car in a legal way.For a period of time, cones will be put out inthe bus lane during activities in the afternoons/evenings, to prevent unsafe situations.I started with good news and I will concludewith some other good news – the staff at ISS is avery healthy staff compared to the trade outside.While the percentage for sick leave for our staffis 3,7%, the percentage for education staff inNorway generally is 6,7%.Have a nice spring time and enjoy the days.Sølve Ims OttesenHSSE Coordinatorwww.isstavanger.noThe In f o r m e r 29 Ap r i l 2009 · 19
