We never know what treasures may turn up in our 34 shops. Here, Head of RetailHeather Sawney talks about some of the most recent ‘precious surprises’ to havebeen donated – one with a link to cult 1960s TV show The AvengersMaking the most of donated‘precious surprises’We are continually surprised by peoples’amazing donations and what we mayfind in a carrier bag or black sack. Recentlyin our warehouse we opened a bag, sorted afew towels and sheets and then revealed….a1900s crepe de chine bottle green dress andthen, with one more rummage – vintageIrish dance dresses, complete with charms –absolutely exquisite!Other recent donations into our MargateFrocks ‘N’ Stock shop, have included anEdwardian Parisian ostrichfeather fan, with goldmonogram in fantasticcondition and madeby world renownedfan makersGoossens Frere &Soeur. The fan wasin its original boxand when opened, you could stillsmell the powderthat would be usedto ‘dress’ the fan.One very kinddonor handed us abox and we revealedthe most incredible fullybeaded ‘flapper’ dress; the weightis extraordinary and it shimmers in the light. We need to treat such donationscarefully. We research and study the items, photographing them for posterity. We thenlook to achieve the best price that we can;ensuring the item is recognised for its worthand that Pilgrims Hospices has made themost of the generous donation.A black dress, part made with netting, wasfound in one of our shops by a colleague. It had been designed by John Bates, whoproduced clothing under the Jean Varonlabel. He designed during the mid 1960s,creating costumes for Diana Rigg, a star ofThe Avengers. You may get a little chilly wearing acrocheted bra and suspenders, createdunder the label of ‘John J Roussel France’but you wouldn’t be wrong in thinking theyhold a place in history – at the Victoria &Albert Museum to be exact! Unfortunatelyfor the museum it hasonly the bra – but wewill be looking for acollector for our set.Whatever yourdonation, wealways ensurethat it raises asmuch as it can forPilgrims Hospices.Pictured: TopEdwardian ostrichfeather fan, left JeanVaron designed dressand, right, beaded1920s ‘flapper’ dress.Shop opens witha civic flourishCustomers surged intoPilgrims Hospices new shopin Sandgate Road, Folkestone, during July when it opened itsdoors for the first time. They quickly found a rangeof attractively priced pre-lovedbargain items in the towncentre shop, located next doorto Debenhams. The new store was openedby Folkestone Town Mayor Cllr Roger Westand his wife Pat, the Mayoress. Five minutes withvolunteer AndrewAsking AndrewFrame whyhe volunteers forPilgrims, his wifeMargaret chipsin: “He has lots ofenergy he needssomething tochannel it into.”Born in London,he jokes he’s still a‘DFL’ (Down FromLondon) but has been in Chestfield, nearWhitstable, for six years. Following 12years as an NHS podiatrist, and 21 yearsin quality control for British Gas, he cameto Pilgrims, after retirement, as a driver forpatients.“I have the benefit of experience andtime to give,” he says. His volunteeringhas grown to include maintenance for theAnn Robertson Centre for education andtraining, a role he was proud to acceptbut as he talks he reveals he does a lotmore behind the scenes.Meeting people he knows in town,he takes the opportunity to ask forraffle prizes, puts up banners for events, ferries collecting tins about and pitchesin at countless fundraising events – allwhile finding time for his family, threegrandchildren included.“I enjoy the contact with people,” heexplains. “I have a rapport with everyoneand I am really trusted. We are all workingfor the same goal, to help the patient.”At home with a leg injury, Andrew isbusy preparing labels for December’sTrees of Love event. At the end of the interview, his postarrives. In it is a get well card from Pilgrims.Andrew places it on the mantlepiece, nowfull of messages. He says. “You know, it’sgreat to be part of a team.”If you would like to volunteer, pleaseemail eastkent@pilgrimshospices.org withyour details. Two years ago, Barry Dunlop was collectinghis wife Sheila after her session as volunteerreceptionist at Pilgrims Hospice Ashford whenhe saw the sorry state of a wildlife garden andpond in the far corner of the site.Realising it was in urgent need of sometender, loving care Barry quickly agreed a workschedule to clean up the aquatic feature andrestore some order to the place. Now, the revitalized garden is recognized asa calming haven in which nature can thrive aswell as being a place where patients and familiescan enjoy the outdoors beyond the hospice’smore formal gardens. As we write, Kent WildlifeTrust is considering the wildlife garden for aprestigious award.Barry has had considerable help along theway – he quickly realized it wasn’t a job for justone person. Clearing the pond became a projectreadily adopted by volunteers of the Green Gymat nearby Singleton Environment Centre.Barry said: “In those early days I was chestdeep in the pond trying to get weeds anddecaying greenery out so I was very happy whenthe Green Gym team stepped in – a group of 10at a time would turn up and they made a greatdeal of difference.“So many people have kindly given their timeto cut back and tidy up greenery, plant moreflowers, lay paths, coppice the trees – we nowregularly have bags of logs for sale – and go onto help raise money to pay for materials.”The garden is home to the hospice’smemorial brick pathway so it’s appropriate thatTranquil garden is abuzzing place for wildlifevisitors can enjoy somewhere to sit quietlyif they wish. To that end, Barry has ensuredthere are wooden benches installed – oneof which is beneath a bower formed by thebranch of a tree.Earlier this year, volunteer Mike Hardernorganised a masked ball in Folkestone whichraised £2,000 to buy a summerhouse. Sinceits arrival in July it has proved to be a hit withpatients who, if they wish, can relax there oruse it as a studio in which to paint pictures ofthe colourful scenery before them. That vista is filled now with field poppies, sunflowers, meadow grass and corn flowers,to name but a few, with bees, butterflies andother insects populating the garden. This isdespite the local rabbit population decidingthat 50 newly planted primroses were toogood to resist – they munched their waythrough the lot in the space of a weekend!Barry added: “Before I became avolunteer, I had worked on building sitesall my life so meeting people at the hospicehas been a complete contrast. I starteddoing a few hours a week but I’m nowhere most days. I’ve learnt so much aboutcommunicating and understanding people’sdifferent needs too.”If you would like to join Barry in helpingmaintain the wildlife garden, please contactPilgrims Hospice Ashford on 01233 504100.Volunteer gardeners are also being soughtat Pilgrims Hospice Thanet which can becontacted on 01843 233920.18 19
