Men’s Cross Country 2012 Season PreviewIndiana State’s men’s team enters the2012 cross country season with morereliance on a young group of runnersthan in year’s past. The Sycamoreshave just three seniors on the teamthis year with five sophomores, eightred shirt freshmen, and eight truefreshmen. The tradition of SycamoreCross Country, however, is in goodhands with this group of young men.ISU won their third straight MissouriValley Conference Championship a yearago and has four veterans returning whoplaced in the top 30 at the conferencemeet. The team title was the Sycamoresninth championship as a member ofthe Missouri Valley Conference. TheSycamores won three straight MVCteam titles from 2004 to 2006 afterwinning their first title in 1996 andgaining their second conference crownin 1998.Head coach John McNichols, whois beginning his 30th season at thehelm of the program, believes thatthe Sycamores have a good chance ofwinning their fourth straight title thisyear if they continue to train hard andremain healthy.The Sycamores lost the services oftwo seniors to graduation includingJeremiah Vaughan and Craig Padgett.Vaughan finished second at the 2011MVC Championships becoming thefourth Sycamore to finish second at theValley championships. He was a threetimeAll-Conference performer, finishingfifth in 2010 and sixth in 2009.Padgett was also a three-time All-Conference performer, finishing fourth in2011 and 2010 after a 10th place finishin 2009. Padgett also earned All-Regionhonors with a 16 th place finish at theGreat Lakes Region Championship.Leadership for the 2012 team hastransferred to four seniors in DustinBetz, Albaro Escalera, and CoreyHahn.Betz and Escalera are All-Conferenceperformers with Betz finishing sixthand Escalera seventh at the 2011championships. Escalera earned his firstAll-Conference recognition in 2010 witha third place finish. Hahn and Sullivan,normally middle distance runners forthe Sycamore track & field team, didnot compete in 2011.There is plenty of experience amongthe six sophomores on the 2012 teamled by Tristan Selby who was 18th atthe MVC Championships and DrewGambill who was 26th in 2012. MiltonBrinza ran in five meets during theseason and was 51st at the IndianaIntercollegiates. Brad Adams and BryanHorsman did not compete a year ago.Eight red-shirt freshmen are alsoon the team with several expected tocompete for one of the top spots on theroster this year including Taylor Head,John Mascari and Gabe Ocasio. Otherred-shirt freshmen are Dylan Bertsch,TSteve Humes, Kyle Kauffman, andGarrett Smith.Five true freshmen will also competefor a roster spot including AndrewKump, Nathan Kump, Kyle Nurse,Daniel Swem, and David Timlin.The Indiana State season begins inPeoria, Ill., this year as the Sycamorescompete in the Bradley Invitationalwhich will be run on Friday, Sept. 7.That will be followed a week later bythe 2012 Indiana Intercollegiates whichwill be hosted by Indiana State on theLaVern Gibson Championship CrossCountry Course at the Wabash ValleyFamily Sports Center on Sept. 14.The Sycamores finished third a yearago behind Purdue and Indiana withVaughan leading the Indiana Statecharge with a fourth place finish. Betzwas 10th.That is the only home meet of the2012 season for Indiana State as theSycamores will compete in the NotreDame Invitational on Sept. 28, thePre-National Invitational at Louisvilleon Oct. 13, the MVC Championships inNormal, Ill., on Oct. 27, and competethe regular season with the HoosierInvitational on Nov. 2. The 2012 GreatLakes Region Championship will beheld at the University of Wisconsin onNov. 9 with the 2012 NCAA DivisionI Men’s and Women’s Cross CountryChampionships in Louisville on Nov.17.Indiana State will again host theNCAA Division I National Championshipsin 2013 which will mark the 10th timein the last 12 years that Indiana Statehas hosted the prestigious event.Sycamore Cross Country 2012 YearbookPage A5

Women’s Cross Country 2012 Season PreviewIndiana State’s women made greatprogress as a team in both 2009 and2010 as they finished 4th in the MissouriValley Meet both years. The 2011team, despite high hopes and a verygood year overall, finished a very disappointingsixth in the MVC Meet heldon the Gibson Course. The 2012 teamwill be challenged to put 2011 behindthem and contend for an MVC Title.During Coach John Gartland’s 24 yeartenure as head women’s cross countrycoach, he has led the Sycamores to twoconference titles (1991 and 1993), andin 16 of those 24 years, Indiana Stateteams have finished in the top four ofthe conference. Those teams have finishedsecond in the MVC three times,third six times and fourth five times.Most recently, the Sycamore women’scross country team has placed thirdin the MVC Conference Meet in 2000,2001, and 2003.“This is a very hard team to predict,”said Gartland who is preparing to coachhis 25th women’s cross country teamat Indiana State. “Each woman hasrun very well at times but we have notbeen able to come through in biggercompetitions as a team.”The key losses from 2011 are KacieKlem, Andrea Prusz and Kristy Twitchell.In 2011, they were the Sycamoresfirst, third and fifth runners, respectively.“We will miss those three graduatedseniors very much,” said Gartland, whois a past Conference Coach of the Year.“Besides being very tough and competitiverunners, they were strong leaders.I hope someone can step up andtake their places in both areas. I lookforward to coaching this team becauseof the collective positive attitudes andwork ethic of the team members.”The top returner is junior JessicaZangmeister. Zangmeister made hugeprogress a year ago in both cross countryand track. She improved her crosscountry times to 18:20 and 21:50 whilerunning a time of 17:25.01 in the 5,000on the track this past spring. She finished11th in the MVC cross countryrace but came back strong outdoors toplace in both the 5,000 and the 10,000in the MVC Outdoor Meet. She is aformer Footlocker finalist who finished26th in that 2008 national race.The fight for positions after Zangmeisterwill be very close with a numberof runners vying for positions in thetop five. Kalli Dalton, a transfer fromMississippi State a year ago, madeprogress throughout the year. As herfitness improved, so did her racingprowess. She culminated her first seasonas a Sycamore by finishing thirdin the MVC Steeplechase, running astunning 10:47.31 to break the schoolrecord by five seconds. She looks to improveher 18:59 cross country 5k froma year ago.Nicole Lucas, one of the top highschool runners in Indiana in 2010, contributeda lot to the team in her freshmanyear. She now looks to step it upto a new level as she is familiar with theDivision I scene. Lucas ran 18:56 and22:44 in her freshman year.Val Burns had some very bright competitivemoments in her second year atIndiana State. She improved to 18:53and 23:36 in cross, and had a very nicebreakthrough indoors running 17:24.72for 5,000. Unfortunately, a non-runninginjury ended her outdoor season earlyand she will probably be red-shirted forthe cross country season.Hanna Mercer, a senior fromNorthridge, will also fight for a topfive position on the team. Mercer’s bigbreakthrough this past spring came inthe steeplechase, where she improvedto 10:57.24, third best in school history.She looks to take that improvement intocross where her steeplechase strengthwill help. Ashley Name has shownflashes of brilliance over her first twoyears at Indiana State but was slowedby injury for most of this past year. Sheshould be able to improve on her bestof 19:37, set during her freshmen year.Kylee Thacker, one of Indiana State’stop runners in 2010, redshirted the entire2011-12 year. She looks to regainher form from two years ago when sheran 18:56 and 23:12, and finished 38thin the MVC Cross Country Meet.Sydney Chapman is a newcomerGartland is excited to have. The formerstar from Hamilton Heights hasrun 18:46 over the 5k cross countrydistance. She has been one of thebest high school distance runners inIndiana over the past two years. TriciaJoll, Emily Cotterman, Alyson Johnson,and Holli Walker are the other freshmennew to the 2012 team. Joll andCotterman were members of the strong2011 Valparaiso and Terre Haute Northteams, respectively.The roster is full of other potentialcontributors for the Lady Sycamores.Terre Haute North grads Alexa McFaddenand Lindy Jones return in theirjunior years. Additionally, veterans EmilyMercer, Amy Hicks, Shelby Sands,Casey Boose, and Emily Qualls returnto give the Sycamores a lot of depthand a very large, yet competitive team“Our 2012 schedule will challengeus,” said Gartland. “After our first meet,we will compete every other week, allowingus to recover and train well inbetween. We will start our season atBradley on September 7th. A weeklater we will compete at the Intercollegiates,held this year on our GibsonCourse. We will again compete at theNotre Dame Invitational, where wehave been very competitive the pastfour years. The MVC Meet will be heldat Illinois State this year, and the GreatLakes Regional will be in Madison, Wis.,my hometown. We look forward to gettingsomeone qualified for the NCAAMeet, held this year in Louisville, Ky., atSawyer Park.”Gartland assesses the potential ofthe team this way:“We were all very disappointed theway the MVC came out a year ago,”said Gartland. “We ran very well leadingup to that meet and very well twoweeks after at the Regional Meet, butwe did not come through when weneeded to. This year we need to useour early meets as confidence buildersfor the big day on October 27. We needto stay healthy and have some of ouryounger runners develop quickly. Indiana State University, in cooperation with Vigo County and theCity of Terre Haute, are committed to making the championship experiencespecial to the student-athelte, coaches, and staff of the competing schools,and to the fans in attendance.The LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course at the WabashValley Family Sports Center was dedicated on October 17, 1997. The 240acres of land for the development of the course and facility was donated byLaVern Gibson. Indiana State and Boston Celtic basketball great Larry Birdmade a donation to the development of the facility in honor of his father, JoeBird, and that donation was matched by Max and Greg Gibson in the nameof their father and grandfather, respectively. Indiana State Cross Country / Track & Field Coaching StaffJohn McNichols is set to begin his fourth decade ofcoaching cross country and track & field at Indiana Statewith the 2012-2013 academic year. The St. Charles, Iowa,native enters his 30th season as the Indiana State men’strack & field and cross country coach during the 2012-2013 campaign, and his 25th year as the coordinator of theSycamores’ combined men’s and women’s track & field andcross country programs.Since his arrival, the ISU men have won eight crosscountry titles, including three-straight Championships from2004-06 and again from 2009-2011, one Missouri ValleyConference indoor track & field title, and eight Missouri ValleyConference outdoor track and field titles including back-tobackchampionships in 2011 and 2012. In addition, McNicholshas led the Sycamores to the Indiana Intercollegiate crosscountry championship four times. Under his leadership,the combined men’s and women’s programs have won 28Missouri Valley Conference championships.The success of the Sycamore combined program has ledto numerous honors for the veteran coach. McNichols hasbeen named the MVC Cross Country Coach of the Year eighttimes (1996, 1998, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2011),MVC Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year once (2011),and the MVC Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year ninetimes (1986, 1988, 1990, 1993, 1997, 2001, 2006, 2011,2012), the NCAA District V Outdoor Track and Field Coachof the Year four times (1988, 1993, 1997, 2001), and wasthe Great Lakes Region Cross Country Coach of the Year in2009.McNichols is just one of 11 coaches in the history of theMissouri Valley Conference to be named to the league’s trackand field All-Centennial Team. The veteran men’s coachjoins ISU women’s cross country head coach John Gartlandon the list to form the only coaching tandem in the leaguecurrently on the all-time list.The veteran coach was inducted into the Indiana Trackand Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame in 2007 and theDrake Relays Coaching Hall of Fame in 2008.In addition to his team and personal accolades, the ISUprogram has had success on the national level. The men’strack & field team has been consistently ranked as one ofthe top programs in the nation during his tenure, finishing inthe top 20 three years in a row (1999 to 2001). At the NCAAIndoor Championships, the Sycamores placed 11th in 1990.With team success has also came individual successfor members of the team. On 25 occasions, McNichols hashad an All-American and six times a Sycamore has stoodon the second step of the awards stand at the nationalchampionships. He has coached a pair of national champions- Chris Lancaster in the 110-meter hurdles (1990) andAubrey Herring in the 60-meter hurdles (2001). ISU hurdlershave competed at the NCAA Championships 19 times duringMcNichols tenure. He is the first Sycamore track& field athlete to compete in the Summer Olympics and oneof just five Sycamore athletes to compete in the Olympics.Another of his prized pupils was Holli Hyche who wonseven-straight NCAA sprint championships and was a 10-timeAll-American. Hyche won two Indoor 55 meter titles, twoindoor 200 meter titles, two outdoor 100 meter titles, andone outdoor 200 meter title from 1993 through 1994. Twomembers of the Sycamore men’s team have been nationalchampions during McNichols tenure including seven-timeAll-American Aubrey Herring who won the 60 meter highhurdles indoor title in 2001 and three-time All-AmericanChris Lancaster who won the 110 meter high hurdles outdoortitle in 1990. Herring also finished second three times at thenationals during his career at Indiana State.His success has not gone unnoticed, primarily in thehurdles area. He served as the Hurdles Broad Event Chair(2000-2009) for the USATF Men’s Development Committeeand was 110 meter hurdles chair from 1989 to 1999. Withthis responsibility, he assisted and interacted with the nation’sbest hurdlers and their coaches who rank as the world’s best.A former hurdler himself, he handles that responsibility withthe Indiana State track and field staff.In addition to his success of coaching hurdlers andsprinters, McNichols has developed a national identity forthe Indiana State cross country program over the last 20-plus years. In that time, he has mentored 47 all-conferencerunners, 17 all-region selection and five runners whoadvanced to the NCAA Cross Country Championships: KyleHobbs (1991), Jason Gunn (1999 and 2000), Justin Kunz(2006), Scott Keeney (2008), and Eric Schulz (2009).Besides his team’s successes, one of his greatestaccomplishments to date has been the design anddevelopment of the finest cross country course in the nationat the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in eastern VigoCounty. Indiana State Cross Country / Track & Field Coaching StaffJohn Gartland - Women’s Cross Country Head Coach / Track AssistantFor nearly a quarter of a century, John Gartland has heldthe reigns of the Indiana State women’s cross country team.He enters his 25th season as the head coach with the 2012-2013 campaign and his third season as an assistant coachon the women’s track & field team after serving as the headcoach for 22 years. The Madison, Wis., native handed overthe top spot of the women’s track & field program to formerassistant coach and former Sycamore athlete Angie Martinafter the 2010 season.Gartland is just one of 11 coaches in the history of theMissouri Valley Conference to be named to the league’s trackand field All-Centennial Team which was released in 2007.The veteran women’s head coach joins ISU men’s headcoach John McNichols on the list to form the only coachingtandem in the league currently on the all-time list.The honor stems from his team’s successes over twodecades on the course and on the track, including two crosscountry conference titles (1991, 1993), four indoor trackconference titles (1993-95, 2001) and six outdoor crowns(1991-94, 1998-99). Gartland’s squads have also fared wellat the national level as the women’s track and field teamshave finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships threetimes including a fifth place finish at the 1993 NCAA IndoorChampionship and a sixth place finish at the 1994 OutdoorNCAA Championships.He has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Coachof the Year 10 times (six in outdoor track & field, three inindoor track & field, and one in cross country) and the NCAADistrict V Coach of the Year four times (indoor track & fieldand outdoor track & field in both 1993 and 1994).While handing over the responsibilities for the overalldirection of the women’s track & field program, Gartlandremains as an assistant coach to mentor the women’sand men’s middle distance runners, the women’s distancerunners, and the men’s and women’s high jumpers in theSycamores’ combined track and field program.Indiana State distance runners have often found their wayto the top indoors and outdoors during Gartland’s tenure atISU. Debbi Ramseyer leads an impressive group of runnersas a winner of nine combined titles in track and two crosscountry championships to go along with 12 combined allconferenceselections. He also competed in two straightUSA Outdoor Championships and had qualified for the U.S.Olympic Trials but was unable to compete in 2012. In all,high jumpers have qualified for the NCAA Championships 18times under Gartland’s leadership with eight All-Americansand 30 MVC Champions.Prior to accepting his position at Indiana State, Gartlandserved an assistant track coach and women’s cross countrycoach from 1982-88 at Western Michigan. His Broncos wonthree-consecutive Mid-American Conference titles from1984-86 and he mentored 13 MAC individual champions andsix runners-up in the throws and distances. He also coachedthree NCAA qualifiers, including 1986 third-place finisherCaroline Mullen, two All-Americans, and one U.S. OlympicTrials qualifier in the distances.Before heading to Western Michigan, Gartland served asa graduate assistant track coach and women’s cross countrycoach at Indiana under head coach Sam Bell from 1980-82. Under his guidance, the Hoosier women finished sixthin the Big Ten in cross country and second in the NCAARegional Meet, while two of his runners advanced to theNCAA Championships in 1981.Gartland’s coaching ledger began in Wisconsin, wherehe was the head boy’s cross country coach at MadisonEdgewood High School from 1976-78. He also served asthe assistant girl’s track coach at Edgewood in 1976 beforebeing named the head coach in 1977 and the boy’s assistantcoach in 1978. From there, he moved on to become thehead boy’s track coach at Madison West High School from1978-80, while also spending time as a part-time assistantmen’s track coach at Wisconsin from 1979-80.Aside from coaching, Gartland served as the president ofthe USTFCCCA Division I Cross Country Coaches Associationfrom 2006 to 2009 and has been the Assistant Meet Directorat the NCAA Cross Country Championships in 2002 andSycamore Cross Country 2011 Yearbook

In two years as the headcoach, Indiana State has had a nationalchampion, four All-Americans, twoconference champions, and 24 selectedAll-Conference performers.In her second season as thewomen’s track & field head coach,three Sycamores earned All-Americanrecognition at the NCAA OutdoorChampionships and one earned All-American Recognition at the NCAAIndoor Championships. The group wasled by Felisha Johnson who picked upthree All-American recognitions during2012 season with a fourth place finishin the weight throw at the IndoorChampionships, and fifth in the shotput and 22nd in the discus at theOutdoor Championships. Johnson alsocompeted at the U.S. Olympic Trialswhere she finished 13th.The Sycamores earned seven indoorand eight outdoor All-Conferencerecognitions at the MVC Championships.Nicole Hope won the Indoor Pole Vaultconference title while Macey Black,Stacia Weatherford, Leeann Michl,and Kaci Smith combined to win the4x400 meter relay at the outdoorchampionships. Five members ofthe team qualified for the NCAA EastPreliminary round including RichelleKimble in the pole vault and LeannMichl in the 800 meters, both justmissing out advancing to the NCAAFinals. Shefinished 17th overall in the heptathlonat the Outdoor NCAA Championships.After winning the 2008 IndoorMVC Championship in the 400 metersand 4x400 relay, Erica Moore wenton to finish ninth in the Indoor NCAAChampionships in the 800 meters. Shealso competed in the Outdoor NCAAChampionships and US Olympic Trialsin the 400 meter hurdles.Two other Sycamore athletes underMartin’s direction were Anthony Bertoliand Sean Wright. Bertoli finished thirdin the men’s decathlon at the 2009MVC Outdoor meet, while Sean Wrightfinished second in the 400 meters.Wright, a 20 time All-MVC athlete,qualified for the NCAA Mideast Regionalin both the 200 and 400 meter dashwhile Bertoli provisionally qualifiedfor the NCAA Championships in thedecathlon.The 2007 season saw Wrightprovisionally qualify for the NCAA 400meter dash indoors en route to breakinga 25 year old school record. She also coachedstate qualifiers in the 4 x 400 meterrelay and high jump.A student-athlete from 1997-2001,Martin was a three–time MissouriValley Conference champion in the 400meter hurdles. Her quest to achieveAll-American honors in 2000 is a ragsto riches story. Having never run the800-meter run in high school andAngie Martin - Women’s Track & Field Head Coachhaving only run it once as a freshman,she began training for the race with apassion.In less than a year, her desireculminated with an all-time 800-meterindoor Missouri Valley Conference recordof 2:06.19 at the NCAA Championships,where she placed 8th. Outdoors, shewent on to run 2:06.05 and finished18th at the NCAA meet. In 2007, Martinwas named to the MVC All-CentennialTeam for middle distance to join someof the best track & field athletes ofall-time. Martin was inducted into theIndiana State University Athletics Hallof Fame on Feb. 13, 2010.She was a two time state championin the 300 meter hurdles in Wisconsin(Seymour) and still holds the statechampionship record for Division I.In addition to her success on thetrack, Martin was an outstandingstudent-athlete. She graduated fromIndiana State with a degree in arteducation and a minor in physicaleducation. Her laurels as a studentathletealso earned her the prestigiousHillman Award for being the best seniorathlete at Indiana State in 2001. Hisathletes also have had great success at theMVC Championship as well. He has guidedathletes to 21 conference titles and 39 All-MVC awards.Martin was named the 2010 USTFCCAGreat Lakes Region Women’s AssistantCoach of the Year and recently becamecertified as a USA Track & Field Level 2coach for jumps.The tradition of outstanding vaulters andhorizontal jumpers continued at IndianaState in 2012 under Martin’s tutelage.Nicole Hope won the MVC Indoor title inthe pole vault with Richelle Kimble second.Hope missed the outdoor season but Kimblewas second at the MVC Outdoor meet andjust missed advancing to the NCAA OutdoorChampionships with a 14th place finish atthe NCAA East. Maurice Lyke won the MVCIndoor long jump title and Earnest Rollinsthe MVC Indoor triple jump title.During the 2011 season, Hope wonthe 2011 MVC Outdoor title and finishedsecond at the MVC Indoor Championship.Richelle Kimble formed the other half of adynamic duo for Indiana State as she tiedHope for second at the MVC Indoors andfinished second behind Hope at the MVCOutdoors. Both also competed in the NCAAEast Preliminary as did ISU triple jumperErnest Rollins. Shayne Cureton and NigelJolly competed in the long jump whileMarcel Hamilton in the triple jump at theUSA Junior Nationals this past year.Martin coached then-senior Kylie Hutsonto repeat championships at both the 2010NCAA Indoor and 2010 NCAA OutdoorChampionships in the women’s pole vaultas she continued to reset the Indiana Staterecords both indoors and outdoors, andbecame one of the top women pole vaultersin the United States. Hutson, who cleared14’-9” indoors and 14’-9.5” outdoors toestablish ISU records, was also named theGreat Lakes Region women’s field athleteof the year both during the indoor seasonand outdoor season. Hutson set the all-timeIndiana State and MVC mark of 14’-4.75” inwinning the indoor title and set the all-timeIndiana State and MVC mark of 14’5.25” inwinning the outdoor title. Hutson is a threetimeAll-American.In addition, junior Lauren Martin setan all-time Indiana State and MVC recordof 43’-1” in winning the women’s triplejump at the MVC Indoor Championship.She also set an all-time Indiana State andMVC record of 44’-4.75” in placing secondin the women’s triple jump at the MideastRegional. She finished 10th at the NCAAOutdoor Championships and tied for 15th atthe NCAA Indoor Championships, earningAll-American status at both championships.During the 2008 season, three of Martin’sathletes broke school records: Kylie Hutsonin the indoor and outdoor pole vault, LaurenMartin outdoor triple jump, and Steve Danieloutdoor triple jump. In addition to breakingthese school records, all three advanced tothe NCAA Outdoor Championship in DesMoines, Iowa. Hutson enjoyed her 2008season by breaking both the indoor andoutdoor All-time MVC records, winningboth the indoor and outdoor MVC titles andqualifying for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.Her mark of 14’-1.5” in the pole vault rankedher 5th in the NCAA, 16th in the U.S., and63rd in the world during the 2008 season.Since his time here at Indiana State,Martin has continued the great tradition ofgreat jumpers for the Sycamores. He hascoached five women Sycamores over the19-foot mark in the long jump and threemen over the 52-foot mark in the triplejump. His athletes continue to place andwin MVC championships in the horizontaljumps.Prior to heading to the collegiate coachingranks, Martin coached the Terre Haute SouthBraves to a girl’s track and field regionalteam championship in 2006 and a boy’strack and field regional and sectional teamchampionship in 2005. His cross countryteams also excelled, with boys cross countrysectional team championships in 2004 and2005. Under his tutelage, his athletes set14 school records, qualified for state 58times, named all-state 20 times, captured12 individual regional championships and43 individual sectional championships.As a member of the ISU track team from1997-2001, Martin was a four-year varsityletter winner and six-time All-MVC selection.He was also a member of the shuttle hurdlerelay team that set a new school record witha time of 55.06 at the 2001 Drake Relaysand was an MVC champion as a member ofthe ISU 4x400 meter relay team at the 2000MVC Championship. Prior to Indiana State,Martin was a two-time state champion atWarren Central High School; includingwinning the 110 meter high hurdles in1995.Martin is joined on the staff by his wife,women’s head coach Angela (formerlyBruecker) Martin. Indiana State Cross Country / Track & Field Coaching StaffGeoff Wayton - Women’s Track & Field Assistant CoachGeoff Wayton enters his eighth year ofcoaching at Indiana State after a successfulcareer as a distance runner for the Sycamores(1995-2000).Wayton has helped improve the IndianaState sprinters’ contribution more than600% at the MVC Championships. His firstyear saw Jerry Clopton become the firstmale Sycamore sprinter to advance to theNCAA regional championships in the 200meters. Year two saw Jeramie Gray claimhis first MVC sprint crown in the 60 metersindoors, and Jeanne Roberts run the thirdfastest 100 meter time in Indiana State history(11.51). Also in 2007, the Sycamoresprinters advanced more athletes to the finalsof the MVC Championships in the sprintevents than any other Valley foe.In 2008 Jeramie Gray successfully defendedhis indoor 60 meter conference titleand provisionally qualified for the NCAAChampionships. Outdoors, Jeanne Middletonand Gary Ogburn both advanced to theNCAA regional championships in the 100meters and 200 meters, respectfully.During the 2009 indoor season, JeramieGray and Jeanne Middleton captured theirrespective titles in the 60 meters at the MVCIndoor Championships. Waytons’ 4 x 100mRelay teams accomplished a first for IndianaState University as both the Men’s andWomen’s teams qualified for the NCAA MideastRegional Championships. Daryl Truitt(10.50) and Jeanne Middleton (11.53) bothqualified individually for the NCAA MideastRegional Championships in the 100m dash,and Middleton closed out her career as theMissouri Valley Conference Champion in the100m dash.In 2010, Daryl Truitt continued ISU’sdominance of the men’s indoor 60 metersin the MVC by winning the Indoor Championship.The 2011 season saw Daryl Truitt set acareer-best indoors over 60 meters (6.78)indoors, and five men scored in the 100meter and 200 meter events outdoors withDaryl Truitt, Andrew Stull, Shaun Smith,and Justin Baxtron receiving All-MVC honors.The Men’s 4 x 100 meter relay squadran the 2nd fastest time in school historytwice (40.43).A young group of Indiana State sprintersbegan to emerge during the 2012 seasonGEOFF WAYTONASSISTANT COACHTRACK & FIELDEIGHTH SEASONled by Justin Baxtron who was second inthe 60 meters at the MVC Indoors, and wonthe 200 meters and finished second in the100 meters at the MVC Outdoors.During the Fall of 2012 Wayton servedas Meet Director of the NCAA Division IMen’s and Women’s Cross Country NationalChampionships for the fourth-straight year.Both Wayton and fellow Assistant Coach JeffMartin also serve during the fall as meet directorsfor the Nike Cross Nationals MidwestRegional Championships. In 2009, Waytonalso worked as Assistant Meet Director forRose-Hulman Institute of Technology, asthey played host to the Division III GreatLakes Regional Championships. Waytonalso serves as the Regional Team Managerfor the Nike Track Nationals, a post he hasheld since 2010.A proud Alumnus of Indiana State, Waytonhas founded the Sycamore Track andField Alumni Panel, the Sycamore CrossCountry Alumni Reception, the SycamoreTrack and Field Alumni Reunion, and SycamoreSenior Day.Wayton serves on the United StatesTrack and Field and Cross Country CoachesAssociation Rules Committee, and is activein the Terre Haute community servingas Vice-President of the Farrington’s GroveHistorical District.During his time as a Sycamore studentathlete,Wayton became the first Sycamoredistance runner to capture an individualconference title at the Missouri Valley ConferenceTrack and Field Championships,was twice named all-district in cross country,and was named to the Missouri ValleyConference’s All-Centennial Team in 2007.Wayton was also a prominent member ofthe first two MVC Champion cross countryteams at Indiana State.Following graduation, Wayton took partin the 2000 United States Olympic Committee’sAltitude Training Study in Dallas, Tex.,and Park City, Utah. From 2001-2002, heserved as the head coach of the Academyof Holy Angels boys and girls cross countryand track teams in Richfield, Minn., duringwhich the boys team was ranked seventhin the state in 2001. At Holy Angels his 4 x1600m team qualified for the Adidas OutdoorNational Championships, and a recordnumber of athletes advanced to statecompetition. In 2005, he became the headcoach of Northview High School’s girls crosscountry and track teams in Brazil, Ind. Gilreath had threethrowers earn All-American recognitionduring her initial season as the Sycamorethrows coach and she has all three throwsback.Felisha Johnson earned first team All-American honors with a fifth place finish inthe shot put at the NCAA Outdoors whilealso earning first team honors with a fourthplace finish in the weight throw at the NCAAIndoors. Champion, 1969 Half-MileCheryl Pedlow-Treworgy was the first woman at Indiana State Universityto receive an athletic scholarship and the first woman to receivean honorary “I” Men’s Award from ISU. The Indiana State graduatewas ranked fourth in the world in cross country in 1969 and competedon five United States Cross Country teams at International Championships.She was ranked in the top 10 in cross country nationals for 10consecutive years and set American records (which she held for twoyears) in the women’s marathon in1971. Treworgy earne dher bachelor’sdegree in physical education from ISU in 1969 and a master’sdegree in physical education from California Polytechnic State in 1972.She was inducted into the Indiana State University Athletics’ Hall ofFame in 2004.

She holds several IndianaState records including 14:17 in 4K, 17:09 in 5K, and 20:52in 6K. She is a member of the MVC All-Centennial Cross Countryand Track & Field Team and received the MVC Dr. Charlotte WestScholar-Athlete Award in 2005. She was a four-time All-MissouriValley Conference selection in cross country, a three-time All-Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track & Field selection, anda member of the MVC Scholar-Athlete team. Crowder was alsonamed an Academic All-American by the Women’s IntercollegiateCross Country Coaches Association (WICCCA) three straight years(2001-2003) and was named to the National Collegiate TrackCoaches Association All-Academic team in 2005. She finished hercollegiate career with a 3.967 grade point average. She was alsodominant in the distance events during both the indoor and outdoortrack & field seasons. He is also a three-time MVC scholarathleteselection, received ESPN the Magazine all-district academichonors three times, and was named a United States Track & Fieldand Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) AcademicAll-American in 2008 and USTFCCCA All-District V Academic FirstTeeam selection in 2010. He also received the 2010 MVC Dr.Charlotte West Scholar-Athlete Award and the 2010 MVC EmersonExcellence Award. A three-time team captain and two-timeteam MVP, he twice earned the Indiana State cross country teamLeadership Award while helping Indiana State to two MVC crosscountry titles in his four years. The senior is a three-time memberof both the MVC Cross Country Scholar-Athlete team and the MVCTrack & Field Scholar-Athlete team.
