coreReducing operation times and easier surgicalprocedures by using the latest operating technologywere the objective that the hospitalmanagement and surgeons at Ulm UniversityHospital wanted to achieve with the introductionof a new operating management system. Themanagement joined forces with purchasers andsurgeons to review a range of different operatingsystems. Ultimately, the choice was madeto adopt the core operating system supplied bymedical technology company Richard Wolf. Thissystem is already being used in more than 400hospitals and more than 20 countries worldwide.Since the middle of July, 15 new operatingtheaters have come onstream in Ulm with themanagement system. And all the personnelinvolved are extremely satisfied.Significant time resources were expended in installingthe cabling and setting up the complexinterfaces to other information systems. "Ourexpectations were entirely satisfied and we fullyendorse our decision to purchase core in all respects,"commented Martin Miller, Manager of theDepartment for Materials Management at theUniversity Hospital, in a summary of his experienceswith the core operating managementsystem.The team of employees at Richard Wolf workedtogether with the responsible managers at thehospital to develop a concept that harmonizedthe individual needs of the hospital. Thisapproach took account of the fact that the surgicaldepartment at the hospital wished to continueusing its inventory of relatively innovativesurgical instruments, whereas the instrumentsused in telemedicine and imaging were to becompletely modernized. "Ultimately, a key issuefor adopting core was the flexibility provided forseamless integration of our existing equipmentinto the operating management system," accordingto Miller.The time factor was a particular challenge forequipping the operating theatres. Richard Wolfonly required nine months from the initial consultationto the handover of the systems, includingall installation work in the 15 operatingtheaters. Intensive training for surgeons and theaterpersonnel was carried out in parallel. Thesestaff members were also very satisfied after twomonths of practical testing with the new operatingmanagement system.Axel KellerSales success in LinzThe State Neurology Hospital Wagner Jaureggin Linz has one of the biggest neurosurgerydepartments in Austria with more than 90beds and a correspondingly large number ofspine patients. Until recently, classic microsurgicaloperating techniques were beingused there. At the first presentation of instrumentsfrom Richard Wolf, our Product ManagerDirk Göthel encountered a great deal ofskepticism – and not a single doctor respondedpositively to an inquiry from the managementboard asking which of the doctorspresent would be prepared to carry out a fullendoscopic operation. However, two doctorsfinally expressed their interest in the full endoscopicprocedure and came to Herne for atraining session.OA Dr. Aichholzer and Ass. Dr. Auer returnedfull of enthusiasm and held some extendedmeetings to report on the benefits of the procedure.The result was that we were able tosell our instrument set. On 1 and 2 October,the first three full endoscopic operations weresuccessfully carried out in Linz.This hospital offers major potential for ourproducts because several thousand spineoperations are carried out each year.
