To the south of King’s Lynn, the ancient town of Downham 

Market is a gateway to the mysterious and magical Fens,

A journey of discovery 

Brim full of history, West Norfolk 

is a treasure trove of houses, 

windmills, castles and heritage 

sites to discover. King’s Lynn is a 

real jewel of a town, steeped in 

maritime and trading history. 

The fascinating history of King’s Lynn dates back to the 12th 

century when it was one of England’s most important ports. 

This heritage is reflected in an amazing array of historic 

buildings and at two magnificent market places: Saturday 

Market Place where King’s Lynn Minster is surrounded by 

splendid buildings and Tuesday Market Place, quite possibly 

one of England’s grandest squares. The town’s Hanseatic 

history and trading links with Europe can be explored on the 

self guided Hanse trail. A great place to start your visit is the 

iconic Custom House, home of the Tourist Information Centre 

and maritime display. Ask for a copy of Discover King’s Lynn. 

A highlight of any visit to West Norfolk is of course 

Sandringham House, the Royal Family’s country retreat. Not

far away is Houghton Hall, a splendid Palladian mansion with 

award-winning gardens and parkland. The stunning village of 

Castle Acre is truly rich in history with the impressive priory, 

castle, earthworks and Bailey Gate making this a great place 

to visit. Indeed throughout West Norfolk many fine churches 

are well worth a visit, including the church at Burnham 

Thorpe where the Reverend Edmund Nelson, father of 

Admiral Lord Nelson, was rector. 

To the south the ancient Saxon town of Downham Market, 

popularly known as ‘The Gingerbread Town’ because of the 

buildings made from the distinctive local carrstone, is the 

ideal base from which to discover the fascinating heritage of 

the Fens.

magnificent stretches of superb 

sandy beaches, combined with 

the classic seaside facilities at the 

resort of Hunstanton. 

Whether you’re seeking a quiet secluded spot to lie back and 

relax, or want space to stretch out and play games on the 

sand, the wonderful beaches of West Norfolk are sure to 

satisfy. Even in summer, there’s plenty of space for everyone. 

The combination of vast expanses of sand and extensive 

shallow sea, makes an ideal playground. Check out superb 

beaches, such as Brancaster, Old Hunstanton or Heacham. 

The classic resort of Hunstanton provides a cherished mix 

of Victorian charm, coupled with plenty of opportunities for 

fun, play and excitement. Famed for its striped cliffs and 

excellent beach, awarded Blue Flag status again in 2011, 

Hunstanton is ideal for playing on the sand, exploring rock 

pools and enjoying the sea. The town’s excellent awardwinning 

gardens, are ideal for an afternoon stroll. With the 

traditional entertainment venue of the Princess Theatre, a fun 

fair, Sea Life Sanctuary, boat trips into the Wash, pony rides 

and all the other elements of an excellent family resort, 

Hunstanton is the perfect base to enjoy the coastline. 

For water sports, the West Norfolk coast provides excellent 

conditions for sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, water skiing 

or canoeing.

One of the great pleasures of 

West Norfolk is the chance to 

immerse yourself in an idyllic mix 

of old-world charm, natural 

landscapes and some splendid 

places to stay and to eat. 

Rippling towards the coast the wide rolling landscape is a 

wonderful mix of forest and farmland, with uninterrupted 

views broken only by the occasional church spire or windmill. 

Through this mellow landscape you can visit charming 

villages, where some fine pubs, quality restaurants and 

fascinating individual shops will tempt you to linger for a while. 

Stop off to buy some fine local produce or sample some of the 

excellent local seafood such as oysters, mussels, shrimps and 

crabs fresh from the sea. 

Explore Old Hunstanton with its mix of hotels, pubs and 

craft centre. Stroll down to the beach past colourful beach 

huts nestling amongst the dunes. From here you can walk 

past the famous striped cliffs all the way to elegant

Look out for the majestic sunsets, a really special feature of 

this west-facing east coast resort! 

Visit a host of art galleries, studios and workshops to 

sample the work of local artists and take home a truly original

not visit the regular craft and collectables market at 

Downham Market.

enjoy exhibitions, live performance or perhaps take part in a

Tune in to a

With such a marvellous mix of 

beautiful coastline, rolling 

farmland, forest and fen, why not 

set out on foot or bike to enjoy 

the countryside and its wildlife. 

For many visitors, West Norfolk offers a great opportunity to 

leave everyday life behind and spend a few days exploring by 

foot or by bike along local or national trails. From Hunstanton, 

you can set out along the beautiful Norfolk Coast Path. At 

nearby Holme-next-the-Sea you can also head inland through 

the heart of the idyllic West Norfolk countryside on the 

historic Peddars Way. From King’s Lynn you can follow the Nar 

Valley Way to Castle Acre or follow a waterways trail to 

Downham Market and beyond along The Fen Rivers Way. 

For cyclists, National Cycle Network Route 1 offers a 

fascinating journey through West Norfolk, from the mystical 

Fens in the west, through King’s Lynn and northwards to the 

coast. Just south of King’s Lynn route 1 connects with 

national route 11, giving a fine link through to Cambridge. 

Elsewhere several suggested routes provide a shorter ride. 

Renowned throughout Britain, the special environment of 

West Norfolk provides some of the finest nature reserves in 

the country and outstanding opportunities for bird watching. 

From famous reserves along the coast, and the unique 

environment of the Wash, to the special habitats of the Fens 

and the neighbouring Brecks, there are great opportunities 

for all to enjoy and discover our natural habitats. 


• Visit in winter to experience the amazing wildfowl 

spectacle at The Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust at Welney, 

RSPB Snettisham or RSPB Titchwell. 

• Explore the Norfolk Coast Path – remember the 

Coasthopper bus service when planning your trip. 

• Bring your clubs, there are nine superb golf courses, 

many offering pay and play.

In King’s Lynn, the Corn Exchange 

situated in Tuesday Market Place offers 

a sparkling programme of live 

entertainment, including opera, ballet, 

concerts, comedy, pantomime and 

children’s shows. 

At the King’s Lynn Arts Centre the 

15th century Guildhall of St George, 

provides an atmospheric venue for 

theatre, music, dance, drama and films 

presented by local groups and 

organisations. The complex also features 

four galleries, hosting a wide variety of 

visual art displays and an exciting 

programme of workshops.

Also in King’s Lynn, the Majestic 

Cinema, a classic Victorian-style cinema 

screens films to cater to all tastes. 

At Hunstanton, the Princess Theatre 

has long traditions as a popular live 

entertainment venue. 

Other regular entertainment venues 

include Westacre Theatre featuring plays, 

workshops and open air theatre, Searles 

Leisure Resort in Hunstanton, and 

Downham Market Town Hall. 

King’s Lynn Festival 15-28 July 

King’s Lynn is justly proud of being recognised as a 

‘Festival Town’. Taking place in the heart of this 

historic town, an impressive range of festivals feature 

a fine selection of music, performance and literary 

events throughout the year. 

The 62nd King’s Lynn Festival will feature international names from the 

worlds of classical music, jazz, folk and literature. The festival began in 1951 as 

a celebration of the restoration of St George’s Guildhall which remains an 

important venue. While classical music provides the cornerstones of the 

programme, a wide variety of other events include lighter music presented by 

international artists. The festival’s tradition of excellence draws audiences from 

all over Britain and abroad. During the winter the Festival stages a ‘Three 

Seasons’ concert series also featuring eminent orchestras and soloists.

Geographical Society (with IBG).

Festival plans are announced in January and the brochure is available in May. 

Festival Too Opening night 4 June, then two weekends 6, 7, 13 & 14 July 

Festival Too, now in its 27th year is a festival of free music events. Organised 

with sponsorship and support from local organisations, it is still one of Europe’s 

largest FREE festivals. There are five evenings of entertainment, normally spread 

over three consecutive week-ends with an impressive firework display 

concluding the first evening’s entertainment. Huge crowds flock to Tuesday 

Market Place to listen and dance to music from local and nationally known acts. 

In 2012 the first evening’s entertainment is on Monday 4th June to coincide 

with The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. The event also features free 

street entertainment in the town centre on the Saturdays of the Festival.

King’s Lynn Fiction and Poetry Festivals 9-11 March & 21-23 September 

The Fiction Festival and the Poetry Festival have both taken place in King’s Lynn 

every year since 1984. Both festivals include writers with international 

reputation together with new writers from all over the world. Festival goers are 

able to meet the authors, hear them read and discuss their work whilst having 

the opportunity to buy their books.

Lifestyles Festival, Hunstanton 1-3 June 

Lifestyles, the extreme sports and cultural festival, is packed full of activities 

for everybody to enjoy. In past years the event has featured the BKSA 

National Freestyle Kitesurfing Championships and the UKWA National 

Windsurfing Slalom series. Watch the displays or have a go at skate 

boarding, kitesurfing, windsurfing, parkour and street dance. The event 

includes a VW show which has attracted up to 300 vehicles and the evenings 

feature live music entertainment on Hunstanton seafront.

Hunstanton and District Festival of Arts May and June 

Hunstanton and District Festival of Arts is a celebration of the arts including 

dance, drama, public speaking, music of all kinds and much more. It takes 

place over the months of May and June.

Downham Market Water Festival 5 August 

Now in its sixth year the Downham Market Water Festival has something for 

all ages. The main feature is a knockout dragon boat racing competition with 

teams from clubs, pubs, businesses and sports teams. With stalls, crafts, 

refreshments and a fun fair, the event is a great family day out.

North Norfolk Music Festival 22 August -2 September 

The 8th North Norfolk Music Festival features an array of chamber music 

concerts held at churches including St. Mary’s Church, South Creake and St. 

Margaret’s Church, Burnham Norton. The programme of performances, 

which are held over ten days, involve a host of renowned and famous singers 

and musicians including piano, organ, violin, viola and string quartets.

West Acre Gardens 

At the heart of King’s Lynn town centre and the 

railway station, this recently restored 18thcentury 

park has something for everyone.

A plant lover's paradise, set in an old walled 

garden. Extensive display gardens and a sales 

area packed with choice plants. We grow a 

huge range of herbaceous plants, shrubs, 

alpines, bamboos, ferns and climbers. Many

WWT Welney Wetland Centre 

Get closer to nature and sample the tranquillity 

of 1000 acres of internationally important 

wetland. Encounter thousands of wintering 

wildfowl along with migratory swans at our 

daily swan feeds. In summer discover breeding 

birds, dragonflies and wildflowers or explore 

with family pond-dipping and trails.

Coasthopper 

The Coasthopper bus service is a really great way to explore 

the Norfolk coast. You can use it to travel between King’s 

Lynn, Hunstanton, Wells, Sheringham and Cromer. The 

combination of the Norfolk Coast Path and the 

Coasthopper bus, offers excellent opportunities to leave the 

car behind and discover this beautiful part of our coastline. 

Most services from King’s Lynn to Hunstanton are 

timetabled to connect with First Capital Connect rail services 

with through ticketing available. 

EXPLORE BY BIKE 

There are a host of cycle routes in West Norfolk including the 

Sustrans National Cycle Route 1 (Hull to Harwich) and 

National Route 11 which connects King’s Lynn with
