No. There is a good bit of evidence thatthey shorten the duration of a cold, on averageby about half, but that is not quite the samething as a cure. Also, some cold symptoms arerelieved by zinc lozenges, but not all, so additionalremedies are still beneficial.There are many reasons why there is not yeta cold cure. One is that colds are a short-termproblem, seldom lasting more than a week. Theystill create substantial economic loss, in termsof time lost from work or complications involvingmore serious viral infections. Because of theimmense diversity of cold-causing viruses(almost 200 varieties of rhinovirus alone), thepossibility of a cold vaccine can be ruled out.A second reason is that it costs a lot ofmoney to “prove” a medical treatment, morethan a single individual could afford. The patentfor using zinc as a cold remedy is owned by aTexan, George Eby, who observed that his daughterdid not develop an impending cold after shefell asleep with a zinc tablet in her mouthbecause she was too young to swallow it. Formore than 30 years he has investigated the abilityof zinc to inactivate viruses and believes heknows how it works and why some clinical trialsusing zinc to stop a cold failed. However, toprove his theory would be very expensive, so hesimply sells on the Internet what he has foundto be the best antiviral form of zinc.Although zinc is an important nutrient, withmajor influences on immune function, it stopsreplication of a cold virus in your nose the sameway it does in a test tube, and in a way not toodifferent than the way an antibiotic stops bacterialreplication. Antibiotics keep bacteria fromforming cell walls, and without a protective cellwall they are vulnerable to attack by ourimmune system. Zinc appears to prevent thevirus from forming its protective wall, called acapsid, leaving the virus defenseless. Zinc-deficientindividuals benefit from the zinc supplementationthrough the enhanced cellular immunity,but zinc lozenges seem to avert a cold evenin those who are not zinc-deficient.To explain why several clinical trials of zinclozenges have not worked, Eby points out thatzinc works only when it is in solution and athigh concentrations. Zinc lozenges in a formthat does not dissolve easily have no antiviralactivity. It is also important to concentrate zincin the mouth, nose, and throat. A lozenge that isdissolved in the mouth does this, while zinc in apill that is swallowed distributes zinc throughoutthe body, diluting the effect in any one area.If you are threatened by a cold, it may benecessary to choose between zinc lozenges andhigh-dose vitamin C supplements, another stillunprovennutritional therapy for colds. Some cliniciansbelieve vitamin C may interfere withzinc’s effectiveness, so don’t consume citrusfruit or juices for 30 minutes before or aftersucking on a zinc lozenge. Vitamin C and zincare nutritionally essential for production ofinfection-fighting white cells, so you need bothbut not necessarily at the same time.
